Simple rule: whenever there is an intersection, just slow down a few miles per hour (like from 25 to 20) to check to make sure if its safe to cross..even if there is a stop sign in the intersection because some drivers dont know what they are doing

It isnt very wise to put a simple cross walk on a road like that, it needs a traffic signal or a pedestrian bridge.

But the city probably makes too much money in fines to care.

A big problem I see as a transit bus driver is cars passing me at full speed when I am stopped for a pedestrian. The ped and the driver can't see each other because of my bus, and frequent close calls result. It is very important to slow and pass with caution any stopped vehicle, whether at a cross walk or not.

In Australia we have Pedestrian Crossings that are marked by wide striped lines. There are also zig zag lines as you approach a pedestrian crossing. Can someone explain what the law being broken is in this video?

@dedokta They have to give way to pedestrians who are crossing the road there... It's a poorly marked crossing though, and in an illogical place... it should have crossing signals. I'm surprised they don't get jaywalking tickets for crossing there, the US is very car-centric usually...

I love these stings because working in Berkeley with the wide streets like Shattuck and University Avenue, you take a big risk crossing the streets. Drivers get all wrapped in where they have to go and do not pay attention when they are on surface streets. They don't pay attention to bicyclist, forcing them onto the sidewalks, making it dangerous for pedestrians. I want more of these stings.

This is more a problem with bad traffic engineering than bad drivers. I live in NY, and I've never seen a crosswalk that didn't have stop lights or a stop sign. Most drivers everywhere simply have no idea that they need to stop when there's no device telling them to do so.

This behavior makes me mad and saddens me. I am the only vehicle stopped quite often while others swerve around me while a member OF OUR HUMAN SOCIETY tries to make is safely across several lanes of guided missiles. I cringe when I see people move ahead just because someone has cleared their \line of sight. A few years ago in the Marin IJ a woman actually chastized pedestrians because they shoudl "wait for traffic to clear--didn't they learn to look both ways?" We ARE our brother's keeper!

What surprises me most is that we have the same laws in Massachusetts - and pedestrians only have to be present at an un-signaled cross walk for driver's to be required to stop - and compliance by driver's is almost 100%. Bostonians are bad driver's generally, but we comply with pedestian laws. And we are supposed to be the aggressive, rude ones.

i love it when police do this! cars should stop for pedestrians crossing cause tickets are more expensive if coupled with hospitalization of the pedestrian if got hit. is it really that hard to do? i always stop at a crossing pedestrian then move on. this shows how lazy americans are even on stepping on the brakes. ALL police should do stings ALL THE TIME!!

the problem with being one of the few drivers following this rule that few in the US seem to bother about is that I risk vehicles crashing into the side and back of my car, it's not too different from stalling your car in the middle of speeding traffic all around you. How does one obey a rule like that? I know it is the right rule though

Not good enough. People tend to treat flashing yellow lights as optional. They need to put in a stop light that only activates when a pedestrian pushes a button to cross.

Well out of all the videos on this intersection, this is an unsafe area to have a crosswalk and I disagree, there were people actually trying to stop, they just couldn't do it safely, and that's a really busy road, and if you want people to stop so badly do what they did in San Diego and install a full fledged traffic signal for pedestrians.

Here in SD they're also being very liberal with lighted, flashing pedestrian crosswalk signs, with those LED lights buried along the crosswalk. Pedestrians push a button and it all starts flashing and lighting up. Some even have infrared beams so when pedestrians start to walk towards the crosswalk it turns on automatically.

They've got one or two at the airport, when you're driving towards Terminal 1. I don't know why they put it there, there's never any pedestrians!

They have many of those in Lemon Grove, and then they have the annoying speed bump over them, and it's a real surprise because the speed limit is 35 through Broadway there, and I hate that!

The reason they can't stop safely is because they are speeding. The Speed limit on Geary is 25mph.

Wow, I didn't realize how serious this problem is until viewing this video. These drivers shown in the video are oblivious to what goes around them and even, in front of them. I applaud the SFPD for taking such measure to crack down on defiant drivers who are risking other people's lives by engaging in dangerous driving habits. I also make a commitment not to speed and to respect other people's existence and dignity.

Wow, I seriously had no idea vehicles had to stop for people at an unsigned/-signaled crosswalk like that. But really, it doesn't make much sense to have those on a huge thoroughfare like Geary. Not only that, but like a previous commenter posted earlier, the speed limit is 25. It's such a huge road and a main artery through the city (also part of my work commute). Wouldn't it make sense to raise the speed limit and add signaled crosswalks for pedestrians?

I live in the city of SF and I drive on Geary street very often. The speed limit on the street is 25mph, which I think is very very unreasonable due to the size of it. EVERY VEHICLE drives at at least 35mph, unless there's a police on the street. Given the fact that every vehicle is moving at relatively high speed, the drivers cannot possibly stop for a pedestrian when he's at the sidewalk. (Cont)
