Thats beautiful. Never mind who is the best trumpeter - that is wonderful expressive art. The only problem from the point of view of the composer is that his work won't be performed much, because not many players will be able to handle it.
I totaly agree. But actually Jörg Widmann is quite often performed in Stuttgart. Yesterday I heard ,,Ad Adsurdum", performed by Sergei Nakariakov. (I guess he's the only one who can actually play it)
There is no way to quantifiably know who is the best trumpet player in the world. It's silly to argue about it, because we all have particular aspects of playing that we put on a higher pedestal than someone else. For instance, I love listening to the Finnish trumpeter Jouko Harjanne more than anybody else because it feels to me that all his notes are completely full and centered. Other people don't value that particular trait as much as I do, so they don't like him as much as me.
"There is no way to quantifiably know who is the best trumpet player in the world. It's silly to argue about it, because we all have particular aspects of playing that we put on a higher pedestal than someone else."
Exactly!
By the way, have you listened to Ruben Simeo's recordings?
IMHO Marsallis is excellent; he does however have the benefit of excellent sound people, how else could he perform all four parts of some Trumpet pieces. The effect is excellent as the trills all match and the slides do also.
He's one of the few who have ever perfected circular breathing. When I was young I could do it while sustaining a single note. To do it while articulating is...well...simply amazing!
The only other player that I've heard who could do it all at the same time was Raphael Mendez.
for all around trumpet playing, Al Vizzutti is arguably the best player in the world. he can go from jazz soloing to lead playing, to carnival of venice and never break a sweat.
Get Malcolm McNab's CD. Sergei, Hakan and Allen are not the only ones who can do this kind of thing. And Malcolm's usually busy playing lead for most of the big budget movies being made. He is ridiculous.
Wow, amazing piece. Extremely precise, Sergei is a freak of nature. However, I feel like I could put his sound in a shoe-box... Saying that may cause an argument - not what I want. He's just not 'big' enough for me.
And, cummon guys, Sergei is second best. Hakan Hardenberger still wins...
Anyway Hardenberger is another great one.. thats taste. My favourite is Andre for the quality of his tone and the smoothness of his legato, then comes sergei, who also has a great sound (I listened to him live) and a non-human technique, nobody comes even close, as well as a fantastic phrasing and interpretation.
I don't mean to start an argument, but for me Sergei just doesn't have enough power and body to his sound to be considered 'perfect'. He is super-human, and I can't argue as I aren't a particularly good player myself, it's just that I aural concept differs, and I know that many agree with me...
I think his tone is particularily good for pretty much every single classical piece he has played. Allen Vizzutti, for example has one of those "big tones" as you say, which is really good for jazz and such. But, Sergei has pointed out that you need "a special talent" for Jazz, and I think he has recognized his weakness in his playing and has harnessed his amazing abililty for good tone, articulation, circular breathing, and especially his endurance for playing for a very long period of time.
Hrmm, I don't particularly like Vizzutti's sound either - too... Yamaha(?) Lol.
Anyway, I've just never heard Nakariakov fill a room, even in pieces like the Aratunjian (sp), which, at the opening, should be massive.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that no matter how much technique you play with (Vizzutti, Nakariakov) I feel it is far more important to play with style, grace, and sound. None of which I (personally) find in such playing.
Well, I think if you want a rounded player for every important aspect of trumpet playing with tone, articulation, "filling the room"and such...Wynton Marsalis, no matter how questionable some of his jazz is sometimes, all of his classical performances have been extraordinary.
Yes, he is a very talented musician with a lot of potential. I've heard him play, everyone says he's going to "beat" Sergei and such, which music isn't about.
It's called circular breathing.. It's when you store your last breath in your cheeks then inhale w/ the lungs and repeat.. Thats only the basics there is much more actually.
If there is a "contest" (so to speak), as to who is the greatest trumpet/cornet player of all time, I think it is between Sergie Nakariakov and the late Raphael Mendez.
I saw him at that concert, i have to admit i was abit disappointed. granted, Sergeis technique had my jaw touching the floor throughout the whole thing, but he played the whole piece between PP-mp at a push, it didnt help that the piece is exactly like the first 1:52 minute/seconds throughout, it was like hearing him play a study! n e way, its a serious toss up between him and Hardenberger for greatest classical trumpeter....hhhhmmmm, theres a debate....Hardenberger vs. Nakariakov

The temptation to always say such or such is the "greatest trumpeter" ever might just be a reflection of trumpeters' ego problems...
I think Sergei is awesome, I'll keep it to myself who my favorite is.
