Massive pity they don't make time for the Middle 8 anymore, i've only heard it in the end credits for the beast below, and even that had the announcer talking over it. Its what makes the whole end theme worth while i think
I really like the new theme song. It combines the modern sensibility that Murray Gold (and to a lesser extent the TV movie theme) brought to the table with a little more of the old-style idea of the theme that was missing. The synthesizers are much more prominent here than they were in Nine and Ten's eras. I feel that's fitting, because Eleven is far more alien than the two previous Doctors.
The middle 8 in the themes are really good. Especially this one. The only better middle 8 is peter davidson's. This one makes me imagine a huge spiral of time energy, and the tardis flying in the middle of it.
This theme needs to be reworked. Less drums and chirpy synth, more Derbyshire tones. Hopefully we will get a rework after Series 6 like we did between 2an
Seeing Matt Smith in contrast to the previous two Doctors really makes Doctor Who the best. Each one brings something special to the series, and they all have hearts in their own way yet are still the same person. Fills me with warm fuzzy things ^^
@Darthjedi205! ROFLMAOH! I can some up that season in one word SHIT! Tell me just what the fuck is Moffats facination with the shittest character ever in the history of TV River Song? 4 episodes WTF! Plus he brought back the shit Angels. & episodes 1 half decent result shit season with a shit writter. And he is bringing Song back agaibn WTF! Moffat needs to go NOW!
Tonight I will be watching the greatest DW story ever. The Stolen Earth 2 parter. Lets see Moffat top that!
@hoggys2much The Stolen Earth part 1 was alright, if a bit pathetically fanwanky, but it was completely ruined by the abysmal conclusion, Journey's End. The "biological meta-crisis" was the 2nd shittiest Deus Ex Machina the show has ever witnessed (#1 being TinkerbellJesus-Doctor from Last Of The Time Lords).
Calling it the greatest DW story ever pretty much insults every good writer who has written for the show in its 47-year history. Even RTD himself has done better work.
@hoggys2much Wait wait. You think the weeping angels are shit. We are all entited to are opinons but shit. They were voted to be some of the best villians on doctor. who.
@legomailman Oh God, just a mention of the weeping angels makes me turn around to make sure there isn't one standing behind me. They didn't scare me all that much at first, but now I am seriously terrified of them. Well, them and the Vashta Nerada.
@hoggys2much the stolen earth and journeys end was 1 of 2 insults to doctor who first being the way the doctor looks like gollum in the last of the time lords moffat has done good work river song is a good character and builds a story line on herself and the angel were voted #2 in the greatest villans list 1st i think is now the Vashta Nereda which moffat created
@Accisma lets have a look at moffats episodes shall we. he brougfht back the shit River Song for four episodes! WTF!One of the worst charcters created! He changed the Daleks. What a fucking idiot. Out of the 7 of thirteen episodes that I watched there was only 1 half decent one and that was part 2 of the silurian episode, That season stank and I am not alone in thinking that as viewing figures have gone DOWN since moffatt took over
@hoggys2much You may not be alone in thinking that but your OPINION is in the minority. Regardless, the ratings have NOT gone down. The 2010 season viewing average was higher than the 06 and 07 seasons and was only 200k lower than the 08 season. Not a significant drop considering the drastic increase in iPlayer downloads of this past season. Tennant's last "season" was a series of specials so comparing 2010 ratings with that are "apples and oranges".
@hoggys2much Furthermore, the AI figures have remained strong and are also consistently higher than Tennant's 1st two seasons. You shouldn't believe everything you read in the Daily Mail. Newspapers thrive on controversy to sell papers. Independent study of both the ratings and AI figures clearly show that the ratings are strong. Let me know if you want me to send you a link to where I got my information regarding the ratings/AI.
@hoggys2much Yes, lets have a look at the episodes: "The Eleventh Hour" - brilliant, "The Beast Below" - brilliant, "Victory of the Daleks" - brilliant (although I agree with you about the new Daleks...), "Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone" - brilliant, "Vampires of Venice" - brilliant, "Amy's Choice" - brilliant, "The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood" - brilliant, "Vincent and the Doctor" - probably the BEST DW story ever written, "The Lodger" - brilliant, "Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang" - brilliant.
Example of a good build up to the theme was Episode 2 "The Beast Within", THAT'S a good tension building scary moment to keep u watching in anticipation!!!
I f*cking LOVE this version of the theme (& I'm a purist as I LOVE the original), & when the snare kicks in mid intro it gives me goosebumps. But the only thing that let's it down are the series 5 opening scenes b4 the theme kicks in. They're just not scary enough & have no tension whatsoever. I mean, the Doctor jumping out of a cake proceeded by the theme music! Crap!!!
when the matt smith series first aired i had no idea what to expect in the intro. i was just expecting a re-arangement of david tennant's theme however when i heard the first part of the theme before the woo woos come in i was thinking "this definately is not the doctor who theme because in stead of a repeating dum de dum we have an orchestra bit" and then when the breathy woo woo woos came in i was like "ooh spooky" then when the theme finished i was like "thats damn awesome best yet"

What a Disaster. Delia is turning in her Grave. No wonder people were complaining about this when it came out.. It's AWFUL. but then again, it represents the Nu Crap well!
@WilligsPage First of all, it's "Ron". Not Roy! And secondly, Delia dismissed every version of her theme apart from Peter Howell's Rendition. This was because she understood the Time & effort that he put into making it. Unlike this theme which just covers it all in Brass, Whind & String instruments. There's no creative value what so ever. The Synth sounds that ARE there (in the Background it seems) arn't ever Sculpted anyway. It's just Korg Presets. He just gave an orchestra the notes basically.
No matter which version 0:44 will ALWAYS be my favourate interlude of all the Doctor Who themes.

@DarthJedi2005 I don't think calling him dave is any different that calling james cameron jim. or calling william shatner bill. I'm still calling him david though
@XxozzyshizlllxX Peter Howell's mix was the best I think. During the early/mid 80s. Ofcourse, nothing tops Derbyshire's mix from Troughton up Baker in '79.
@TheEndlessWarlock Oh im sorry, i didnt mean to offend you regarding something that had absolutly nothing to do with you! chill the fuck out mate; if he perferred dave then don't you think he would have made that his stage name instead of david?
I must say as the series progressed I liked this music more and more. Especially twixxed with the exciting time storm titles. The one thing we can guarantee on DW is a change from time to time, and given the chance...it works for most quite pleasingly
I've been asking this everywhere...does ANYONE know if this full length theme with the middle 8 will be used on the DVD release of Series 5 during the closing credits? I prefer this one over the excessively shortened one they use now.
@EconomicImperialist Through the magical powers of my mind! No, not really, just a simple audio rip from the BBC's official Doctor Who website where they released the full theme.
@jampox101 Download Audacity (search it on Google), fiddle around with the settings (I really honestly can't remember which ones!) click record, and you're off!
@DarthJedi2005remixes "how do you do audio rips?" meaning how did u get this without the next time audio "Download Audacity (search it on Google), fiddle around with the settings (I really honestly can't remember which ones!) click record, and you're off! " meaning u lied
@DarthJedi2005remixes " how do u do audio rips?" meaning how did u get this without music "Download Audacity (search it on Google), fiddle around with the settings (I really honestly can't remember which ones!) click record, and you're off!" meaning u lied
@H4CK3R117 Doctor Who was/has been notoriously known for it's synthesized music; in the original series, all of the music was generated electronically, which not only helped define what type of entertainment it was (science fiction), but also became a staple characteristic for Doctor Who. To go 100% orchestral with no synthesis is to abandon 40 years of heritage.
@sixstanger00 I disagree with your comment about all of the music being synthesised in the original series. In the 60s and again in the mid to late 70s quite a lot of the music was recorded using actual instruments - in the 60s they used quite a lot of stock tracks from the BBC archive, and in the 70s, Dudley Simpson had a 7 or 8-piece brass orchestra which performed the incidental music. However, it is correct to say that quite a bit was synthesised (especially the 80s!)
@DarthJedi2005 True about Simpson's orchestra, but he didn't make an episode sound like Indiana Jones or Lord of the Rings, either. It was subtle, and often only accompanied scenes with no dialogue. But believe what you like, the Doctor Who theme from 1963 - 1989 was ALWAYS synthesized using the Radiophonic Workshop. Even Derbyshire's mix (used in the 70s)
@sixstanger00 Oh, I don't disagree that the orchestra was never used excessively, I just think that saying ALL of the series' music was completely artificial is a bit of a broad generalisation as that was not always the case. However, I do agree that the theme had no instrumental elements until later on (Debney, Gold, etc) - although you can't really call the Derbyshire version synthesised. She used quite a lot of practical elements, for example the bassline is a piece of string being plucked.
I am actually enjoying the new theme music but can't say the same for the series so far. Not exactly giving me the thrill as Tennants run did but how do you improve on perfection.
@ClarkyKnowsBest2 I would like to hope so but at this point i'm not sure since the only episode i have rated well was the Eleventh Hour. All the others have not been up to Doctor Who standard. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are just not doing it for me and Moffat is losing his edge. I think so far this series has been overrated and expectations have been way too high. Hitting us like a truck might be a little extreme, maybe a punch buggy :D
Well I'm willing to bet that the Silurian two parter will be good as well as the series finale, like they usually are except Journeys End which was ridiculous.
RTD's stories seemed a bit soft to me but Moffets stories are freaky, weird and awsome.
@ClarkyKnowsBest2 I personally loved RTD's stories and Journey's End was Brilliant. I wouldn't say that his stories were soft it's that he put more of a human element to them which is what i really liked. Moffat doesn't really have that in his. We may be 5 episodes in but we also have only 8 left which may or may not be enough time to salvage the series. I'm glad your being optimistic I guess we will just have to wait and see.
@sherrytastic Actually RTD has won several awards for his work on Doctor Who as well as great recognition by several organizations and publications look it up. The thing i can't understand is that so many people put RTD down but if it wasn't for him we may not have Doctor Who now. Everyone watched it and loved it when he was at the helm so why the sudden turn around? Makes no sense to me.
@GallifreyFilms alright fair enough gosh it's just SOME of his episodes like (aliens of london) "world war three) (christmas invasion) voyage of the damned) etc were quite lame and typical whereas moffat's writng is not that lame and typical the only thing i like about RTD is he got the show back! the only decent episodes are midnight and the end of time two parter! well that's just my opinion of course but i do have a point!
the last seconds of the broadcast closing theme (in the beast below) sound like the last seconds of your "condensed closing theme", e.g. there's no fade out
Thanks for the post. I think this is one of the best theme tunes for Doctor Who ever!! The bit at 0:42 is such a great part, it sounds so good and if you are a big fan of Doctor Who, it really sends shivers down your spine...
Fantastic job Darth and I also wish to thank you as well. With your help I will be able to get by untill the 5th Season of Doctor Who starts on April 17th on BBCAmerica. Wish me luck.
@SuperWolsey Yeah, that'd be great - that's one thing I never really got into. Also if you had the Big Finish Unbound theme, that'd be good too. I used to have it, but I think it got accidentally deleted a few years ago.
@LtGripweed Ah, but I only meant THIS series - think of the Specials as a Torchwood or SJA to this one's Doctor Who! There may well be some more Special Themes to come along...! (If only I had enough time!)
sooooo, I now want to get into Dr.Who simply because of this theme.

@XxozzyshizlllxX Dave?!?! I'd like to know what DAVID Tennant would say if he knew someone called him "Dave"! ;-)
DarthJedi2005 1 year ago 34
@DarthJedi2005 I don't think calling him dave is any different that calling james cameron jim. or calling william shatner bill. I'm still calling him david though

@XxozzyshizlllxX the drumming is the classic Doctor Who beat you hear in every theme.
Nacho2333 1 year ago
@XxozzyshizlllxX Peter Howell's mix was the best I think. During the early/mid 80s. Ofcourse, nothing tops Derbyshire's mix from Troughton up Baker in '79.

@XxozzyshizlllxX Thats all part of the original theme, Moffatt is taking us back to basics.

Wasn't that the theme that was made because somebody thought there needed to be more drums?

@XxozzyshizlllxX How dare you called David Tennant, Dave!

@TheEndlessWarlock Oh im sorry, i didnt mean to offend you regarding something that had absolutly nothing to do with you! chill the fuck out mate; if he perferred dave then don't you think he would have made that his stage name instead of david?

@XxozzyshizlllxX The previous also had the original 60's style sound in it, this one has the 80's style sound in it.

I prefer this one over the excessively shortened one they use now.
sixstanger00 1 year ago
How did you get this?
EconomicImperialist 1 year ago
@EconomicImperialist Through the magical powers of my mind! No, not really, just a simple audio rip from the BBC's official Doctor Who website where they released the full theme.
DarthJedi2005 1 year ago
@DarthJedi2005 how do you do audio rips?
jampox101 1 year ago
@jampox101 Download Audacity (search it on Google), fiddle around with the settings (I really honestly can't remember which ones!) click record, and you're off!
DarthJedi2005 1 year ago
@DarthJedi2005 or u got it from bbc site/doctorwho

What is the Middle 8?
F0nkyNinja 1 year ago
@F0nkyNinja The bit between 0:43 and 0:56, after the main melody line, but before the repetittive oooo-eeee-oooos at the end
DarthJedi2005 1 year ago
@F0nkyNinja The 'other bit' - the more dramatic, action-theme-ish bit.

OK, once you get the lightning strikes out of it I must say the new theme is getting better.
Still like the the first Tenant one better, but you have me here.
Good work.

I like Matt Smith and the new music, but I still can't get over David and the more epic orchestral, Shakespear like (in my mind) music
H4CK3R117 1 year ago
@H4CK3R117 Doctor Who was/has been notoriously known for it's synthesized music; in the original series, all of the music was generated electronically, which not only helped define what type of entertainment it was (science fiction), but also became a staple characteristic for Doctor Who. To go 100% orchestral with no synthesis is to abandon 40 years of heritage.
sixstanger00 1 year ago
@sixstanger00 I disagree with your comment about all of the music being synthesised in the original series. In the 60s and again in the mid to late 70s quite a lot of the music was recorded using actual instruments - in the 60s they used quite a lot of stock tracks from the BBC archive, and in the 70s, Dudley Simpson had a 7 or 8-piece brass orchestra which performed the incidental music. However, it is correct to say that quite a bit was synthesised (especially the 80s!)
DarthJedi2005 1 year ago
@DarthJedi2005 True about Simpson's orchestra, but he didn't make an episode sound like Indiana Jones or Lord of the Rings, either. It was subtle, and often only accompanied scenes with no dialogue. But believe what you like, the Doctor Who theme from 1963 - 1989 was ALWAYS synthesized using the Radiophonic Workshop. Even Derbyshire's mix (used in the 70s)
sixstanger00 1 year ago

Don't worry, I bet amazing stuff hits us like a truck. :D
ClarkyKnowsBest2 1 year ago
@ClarkyKnowsBest2 I would like to hope so but at this point i'm not sure since the only episode i have rated well was the Eleventh Hour. All the others have not been up to Doctor Who standard. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are just not doing it for me and Moffat is losing his edge. I think so far this series has been overrated and expectations have been way too high. Hitting us like a truck might be a little extreme, maybe a punch buggy :D
GallifreyFilms 1 year ago
@GallifreyFilms
Well I'm willing to bet that the Silurian two parter will be good as well as the series finale, like they usually are except Journeys End which was ridiculous.
RTD's stories seemed a bit soft to me but Moffets stories are freaky, weird and awsome.
But c'mon, it's only been 5 episodes so far.
ClarkyKnowsBest2 1 year ago
@ClarkyKnowsBest2 I personally loved RTD's stories and Journey's End was Brilliant. I wouldn't say that his stories were soft it's that he put more of a human element to them which is what i really liked. Moffat doesn't really have that in his. We may be 5 episodes in but we also have only 8 left which may or may not be enough time to salvage the series. I'm glad your being optimistic I guess we will just have to wait and see.
GallifreyFilms 1 year ago
@GallifreyFilms then explain to me why moffat has won so many awards for his episodes and not RTD?
sherrytastic 1 year ago
@sherrytastic Actually RTD has won several awards for his work on Doctor Who as well as great recognition by several organizations and publications look it up. The thing i can't understand is that so many people put RTD down but if it wasn't for him we may not have Doctor Who now. Everyone watched it and loved it when he was at the helm so why the sudden turn around? Makes no sense to me.
GallifreyFilms 1 year ago
@GallifreyFilms alright fair enough gosh it's just SOME of his episodes like (aliens of london) "world war three) (christmas invasion) voyage of the damned) etc were quite lame and typical whereas moffat's writng is not that lame and typical the only thing i like about RTD is he got the show back! the only decent episodes are midnight and the end of time two parter! well that's just my opinion of course but i do have a point!

Thanks for the post. I think this is one of the best theme tunes for Doctor Who ever!! The bit at 0:42 is such a great part, it sounds so good and if you are a big fan of Doctor Who, it really sends shivers down your spine...

@LtGripweed Ah, but I only meant THIS series - think of the Specials as a Torchwood or SJA to this one's Doctor Who! There may well be some more Special Themes to come along...! (If only I had enough time!)
