@lilshortyk6 theres a certain amount there supposed to be fed but she over fed the bigger one by 1/2. when hand feeding babies they bob there heads for food and i guess she thought it was still hungry. when theres more than one they will compete for food so when she brought out the other 2 it started bobbing its head for more food so the others wouldnt get any. im suprised that poor thing didnt keel over.
@SailorBalance because sometimes the parents dont care for them properly. also probly for her reason, shes going to sell them when they get bigger & if she starts to care for them now they wont be scared of people & will enjoy human contact. when you go to a petstore & see young birds that bite that means they were cared for by the parents not the breeder. the breeder spend as much time with them as possible to get them to like people so when they go to there new home they wont bite & be scared.
I have a question.... My pair just had babies as well... 3 hatched but only 2 survived... both babies are lutino, the mother is a cinnoman and the daddy is a solid white albino, do you know if this makes my babies females as well? thanks, I just dont quite get how to tell yet! lol
hey, what do you feed them, how much do you feed them, how do you no when they are full, is the food hot or cold, do you give them water. Please answer these question because im getting a 14 days old baby cockatiel next week and i would really like to no what im doing. also if you have any tips on how to take care of a 14 days old cockatiel that would really helpful. Last question, when do they start eating seeds. Thanks
@crazybaddar Ideally, you should research everything you need to know BEFORE committing to owning any pet, but especially babies that require specialist handling and feeding. The fact that you're asking all these questions on a random Youtube video is quite frankly worrying. Ever heard of Google? Heck, how about a library?
how do you tell if they are male or female at that age because I have two tiels about 6 months and we still can't tell if they are male or female. Also, I have a tiel named lucky too.=)
that is so cute i love lucky i have a cockatiel and she went in her nest yesterday night both mom and dad and she layed 7eggs i can't wait till they hatch!
thats sooo cute please add me i have 2 cockatiels and they went in there nest yesterday night and my cockatiel layed 7 eggs!!!!!! i can't wait till they hatch!!!!
It's not an actual needle just the part that holds the stuff in it. and the reason why she is feeding them that way is b/c the food is like a liquid mush. and she needs some way to put it into their mouths.
Tried sharing feedings with parents no problems worked out great, birds were still extremely tame, was surprised, less work .....but then not fully handraised.

I honestly don't know, I'm sure its is, we have done it from a few days old, but hard to explain, and I don't think I would try it on prpose, you need to be very experienced.

we never really fed to many friuts, we tended to use frozen mixed vegatables and some rice mixed with there pelets, but if I were to take a guess, I would peel them and maybe cut them a bit snaller. you could put in a seperate bowl for special food, that way you could see if they like it first.
acually, yes, it is more common than most people think. in this vidio, the larger of the three was an orphin, he turned out to be large and heathy, who has a great home. so if you are set up for it, its not a bad thing...lol.
I have three babies and so far the parents are taking care of them. Sometimes the babies are unattended but I think it's because they are bored or tired. But the babies are growing up quite ok in the past week. Why are some of you separating the babies from the parents? How do you know when the babies are in danger. I'm just trying to get knowledge, not judging. Thanks for any info!
I found syringe feeding better for the tiny babies, but for the older chicks I use a teaspoon bent up at the sides to form it like a beak and they love it, although it is a bit more messy than the syringe
I have 2 new baby cockatiels, and we feed them with a syringe too. They got used to it within a day and make the same noise they do when they get fed by their parents. We took these out and decided to hand tame them because the parents aren't normally very reliable, they killed the last bunch they had when we didn't interfere. I can't wait for them to grow up, i hope they survive and would love to tame more birds in the future. Awesome video! Great for first time tamers. x
Better off using a plastic spoon that you can soften and shape like a beak on the end. They take to this easier because it's more like their parents beak and its more natural than a syringe
With the amount of babies I fed at one time on a regular basis, it was not ethical for me to use a spoon, because by the time I had finnished feeding one or 2 babies with a spoon, the formula would get cold. Spoon vs. syringe is purely a preference thing, neither of them determine the health or friendliness of a baby as both are equally as effective.
I have 5 babies, and the parents started going insane so I separated them at the time the oldest was 2 week old youngest was 1 week old. I'm having two problems. All except the youngest refuse the syringe. And the second problem is that the young one is so tiny, fully functioning, but stopped growing. He barely has his eyes open, and eats, but is now growing. Can you guys help me out with these two issues?
yes i will back her up on this I am a bird breeder from Canada and yes they do refuse the food sometimes at first because they know what Mommy's beak is but they don't know what a syringe is. that's why you try with these guys every hour they get it on the 2nd or 3rd try. I breed lovebirds I just got a pair of cockatiels hope to have baby teils soon
my cockateil may or may not have babies soon. what is that you're feeding them? & you see, we found our bird so there isnt a father so we dont know how its gna work out. could you message me?
It would appear that I am mean, but the fact is, the white one and the other smaller one where just pulled from the nestbox minutes before this video was taken. The young babies are not sure what the sryinge is yet, they don't know it is food. IT takes 2-3 times of trying to get them to learn that people + syringe = food. He eventually ate, grew up and is now in a new home. Thanks for your concern.
Hi nito 962, I just finished watching the video again. They are so cute. I hope you put another video when they get a little bigger. I'd like to see what they are going to look like and what names you have chosen for them. Good Luck with your little darlings.
I am glad you like my video. This one was taken last year. These lil guys have since grown up, and are now living with their new families. "Lucky" the oldest one was spoken for when someone seen this video and wanted him!
gently use your fingers to open the beak then with a tiny plastic syringe and warm, not hot baby parrot food, slowly inject the food into the beak. I wish you the best. Chus!
yes he was very fat. I used to overfeed my babies as I was always afraid that they never got enough because they would continue to cry after being fed. Luckly him and all the others made out quite well and lived on to be vet checked and certified healthy pet teils. :)
there is no 100% way to tell for sure unless they are dna sexed or a proven pair. There are alot of almost accurate ways of telling though. send me a private message on here and I'll give you my msn messenger addy so I can give you more details if u like.
If you feed more than 10%, the food does not digest between feedings, and sits in their crop. This can cause bacterial infections, and an overgrowth of yeast, or Chlymidia. This can be devastating. Towards the end of the video, Lucky is so full he can't walk! That is sooo dangerous! Please be careful with those sweeties! Find yourself a good Avian vet too for monthly checkups for all your babies.
Thanks for your opinion. This video was taken a year ago, and since then yes I have realized I over fed my babies. None of them ever developed any crop problems, and they all emptied in decent time. No sour crop, no crop infections, no yeast... it worked out alright. Now though, I do not feed as much, I check the temperature and I di change syringes with every "Clutch" of birds, not every bird.
I have been in close contact with several very reputable breeders who have assured me that changing syringes with every clutch is fine, and that it need to be with every bird (especially when you afre feeding say.... 30 birds at one time) I also now have an avian vet whome has passed all of my babies on health exam with flying colours. Thank you for your opinion, but like I said, this video is a year or more old.
Cockatiels should not mate before they are a year old, and even then some won't. I presonally start to handfeed between 2-3 weeks of age, unless the parents reject the chicks, and then I feed from day 1, but only because I must.
Yup IF the male is the whitefaced and is split for lutino and the grey is the female and is split for whitefaced, then you will get the occasional female albino (a.k.a Whitefaced Lutino) OR if the male is grey and split for both whitefaced and lutino, and the female is whitefaced, then you will get occasional female albinos aswell.
You are way over feeding them. A baby bird's food temperature should be between 101.7 and 104.1 degrees F. You should NEVER share syringes between birds. For every bird, a clean and disinfected syringe for every feeding. Always feed your birds one at a time. You should always weigh your birds before each feeding on a digital gram scale. The babies should NEVER receive more than 10% of their body weight at each feeding so, if a bird weighs 20 grams, they should be fed no more than 2-3cc's.
Aw...after 5 months I finally got 2 babies! =D I have bred so many cockatiels and I got to handfeed them when they were around a month old. That grey one looks fine, but I personally think the other 2 are too young to be outside. I take mine out when they develop their crests. Um...where did you get that tool? I don't think we have any so I use small spoons to feed mine.
Congrats on the 2 babies. The younger babies in this video are a Lutino at 14 days old, and a grey at 16 days old. Both did have their crests, but ome from parents in which the father bird plucks the crests off his babies. I pull my babies at the age of 2 weeks old to handfeed them. This is standard practice.
yes you can still play with your cockatiels even if you want them to breed... but, if they do start mating and they are getting ready to brood, they will become agressive towards you during that entire time and up untill they no longer have babies in the nest. the amount of feedings per day depends on how old the chicks are...
When the babies are first pulled at 2 weeks old, they receive 5-6 handfeedings per day, as they age, 1 handfeeding session is dropped, and the others spread out throughout the day and this continues untill they are weaned (approx. 8 weeks but never force them) Day 1 babies eat ever 2 hours around the clock!
I can't seem to access this video, but I believe the oldest was 4 weeks old, and the other 2 were about 2 weeks old. This video was taken quite a while ago so I don't remember exactly. It takes about 10 days for the eyes to open.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
You should not have pulled them away from the nest box unless there was something wrong, you should leave it to the parents.
katsmiff 3 years ago
yes i will back her up on this I am a bird breeder from Canada and yes they do refuse the food sometimes at first because they know what Mommy's beak is but they don't know what a syringe is. that's why you try with these guys every hour they get it on the 2nd or 3rd try. I breed lovebirds I just got a pair of cockatiels hope to have baby teils soon

i have a cockatiel but i want a baby one
poohbeargurl619 3 years ago
It would appear that I am mean, but the fact is, the white one and the other smaller one where just pulled from the nestbox minutes before this video was taken. The young babies are not sure what the sryinge is yet, they don't know it is food. IT takes 2-3 times of trying to get them to learn that people + syringe = food. He eventually ate, grew up and is now in a new home. Thanks for your concern.

Hi nito 962, I just finished watching the video again. They are so cute. I hope you put another video when they get a little bigger. I'd like to see what they are going to look like and what names you have chosen for them. Good Luck with your little darlings.
et6151 3 years ago
I am glad you like my video. This one was taken last year. These lil guys have since grown up, and are now living with their new families. "Lucky" the oldest one was spoken for when someone seen this video and wanted him!
nito962 3 years ago
What is in the syring that you are feeding to the baby cockatiels. They seem to love it.
et6151 3 years ago
It is Kaytee "Exact" handfeeding formula. It is a commercially made bird product, packed as a powder. Just ad water :) Temperature 102 degrees.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm hoping my keets have babies. Your information was very helpful and appreciated. Thanks, Eileen

no problem :)

gently use your fingers to open the beak then with a tiny plastic syringe and warm, not hot baby parrot food, slowly inject the food into the beak. I wish you the best. Chus!

the one cockatiel is soooooo fat!!!lol
jerseykid565 4 years ago
yes he was very fat. I used to overfeed my babies as I was always afraid that they never got enough because they would continue to cry after being fed. Luckly him and all the others made out quite well and lived on to be vet checked and certified healthy pet teils. :)

i bought a another pair of tiels these are tame. How can you tell their gender?
cheke64 4 years ago
there is no 100% way to tell for sure unless they are dna sexed or a proven pair. There are alot of almost accurate ways of telling though. send me a private message on here and I'll give you my msn messenger addy so I can give you more details if u like.
nito962 4 years ago
wich every1 sits on top of the other or tries lol anyway usally i think the males r bigger than the females 2
jjdueck 4 years ago
If you feed more than 10%, the food does not digest between feedings, and sits in their crop. This can cause bacterial infections, and an overgrowth of yeast, or Chlymidia. This can be devastating. Towards the end of the video, Lucky is so full he can't walk! That is sooo dangerous! Please be careful with those sweeties! Find yourself a good Avian vet too for monthly checkups for all your babies.
drkathrynj 4 years ago 2
Thanks for your opinion. This video was taken a year ago, and since then yes I have realized I over fed my babies. None of them ever developed any crop problems, and they all emptied in decent time. No sour crop, no crop infections, no yeast... it worked out alright. Now though, I do not feed as much, I check the temperature and I di change syringes with every "Clutch" of birds, not every bird.
nito962 4 years ago
I have been in close contact with several very reputable breeders who have assured me that changing syringes with every clutch is fine, and that it need to be with every bird (especially when you afre feeding say.... 30 birds at one time) I also now have an avian vet whome has passed all of my babies on health exam with flying colours. Thank you for your opinion, but like I said, this video is a year or more old.
Cheers.

how old do cockatails have to be to mate? and when do you start handfeeding?
cheke64 4 years ago
Cockatiels should not mate before they are a year old, and even then some won't. I presonally start to handfeed between 2-3 weeks of age, unless the parents reject the chicks, and then I feed from day 1, but only because I must.

is it possible to get an albino out of a gray and whiteface?
cheke64 4 years ago
Yup IF the male is the whitefaced and is split for lutino and the grey is the female and is split for whitefaced, then you will get the occasional female albino (a.k.a Whitefaced Lutino) OR if the male is grey and split for both whitefaced and lutino, and the female is whitefaced, then you will get occasional female albinos aswell.
nito962 4 years ago

GoldieTheCockatiel 4 years ago
Congrats on the 2 babies. The younger babies in this video are a Lutino at 14 days old, and a grey at 16 days old. Both did have their crests, but ome from parents in which the father bird plucks the crests off his babies. I pull my babies at the age of 2 weeks old to handfeed them. This is standard practice.
nito962 4 years ago
The "tool" I am using is a 10 CC syringe. I prefer to use the syringe especially with cockatiels as I find the spoon makes for a much messier job.
nito962 4 years ago
i would like to ask u a questions:
Can i still get my cockatiels to breed if I want them to play with me as well?
How often you feed the little ones ?
hoaomoaoso 4 years ago
yes you can still play with your cockatiels even if you want them to breed... but, if they do start mating and they are getting ready to brood, they will become agressive towards you during that entire time and up untill they no longer have babies in the nest. the amount of feedings per day depends on how old the chicks are...
nito962 4 years ago
When the babies are first pulled at 2 weeks old, they receive 5-6 handfeedings per day, as they age, 1 handfeeding session is dropped, and the others spread out throughout the day and this continues untill they are weaned (approx. 8 weeks but never force them) Day 1 babies eat ever 2 hours around the clock!
nito962 4 years ago
wat do u feed them ?

I can't seem to access this video, but I believe the oldest was 4 weeks old, and the other 2 were about 2 weeks old. This video was taken quite a while ago so I don't remember exactly. It takes about 10 days for the eyes to open.
