I met Margaret Gardiner in La Mirada, CA when she was a special guest that year at the Miss California USA Pageant. Had my photo taken with her. Charming and absolutely beautiful. Real tall too!

How ironic. Margaret was very attractive, but I think "Miss USA 1978," Judi Andersen, was robbed because she led throughout the contest. Nevertheless, the irony is that the 1st black Miss Universe crowned a woman from a country who's official racial policy was aparthaid at that time. Margaret never expressed any racial animous, and fortunately aparthaid is no more, but one can't help notice the obvious irony.

Giselle La Ronde, Miss world 1986 from Trinidad, have also retained her beauty ,She as on the Rachel Maddow show on MSNBC recently and still as lovely as ever.

I was 8 years old when I watched this pagent. I was so hopeful that Miss USA would win. I thought she was so beautiful and articulate. I'll always remember that beautiful gown.
