I wondered when I first heard this if BF was mocking the TV evangalist with this song or if he was really wanted to do a sincere religious song. It really doesn't matter, it just goes to show you that he can sing anything - 50's, dylan, crooning 30's, pop or discotheque sexy - he can do it all! Forever More - Forever More!
@pedrocollares OK maybe I am being naive. I know he is a showman and would have been a great actor as well. He would have played a great vampire back in the day. I love the mountain so high note!
@garrycollett hi I would strongly recommend buying "The Thrill of it all" Roxy Music 2 disc DVD. For 19.99 on Amazon, worth every penny. Great videos from the beginning thru the early 80's.
@sonsielass1 In my opinion he smoked a pair of joints before... Maybe he took a line too; he does not seem to be drunk but a bit high... Who knows?? Those were the 70's... Not the best times to avoid all kind of drugs, man! However, this a celestial song; undoubtedly

like all great art, the performance speaks for itself. Mr. Ferry being an artist surely understood, that when giving this performance, it would be interpreted by others according to the personal referents in their lives connected to the words and music of this performance. he probably felt his intention for writing this song and performing it would matter little, since the viewing of it by others would generate new meanings that he probably never considered. it stands up well as art and music.
@bluefox4000 This song is not mocking! Why must athiest always be so prejudiced. I'm not stupid enought to go to "Dear God" by XTC & try to make myself as a Christian believe it's a great Christian song. You can`t change the beauty of this song`s spirituality.

Wow, this is amazing. It has always been one of my favorite Roxy Music songs, but what an amazing live performance. I loved it when Bryan picked up the tambourine. Like a Methodist revival :-)
It says "Musikladen" in the backgrond of the video. And "Der Musikladen" was a West German music television programme that ran from December 13, 1972 to November 29, 1984.
... in late '73 this particular song wouldn't somehow fit into Roxy's glam-repertoire... but through the years "Psalm" has aged VERY WELL as some kind of an hypnotic monster-ballad!
Brisbane riverstage concert was a high point again for me with Roxy. Brilliant and masterful...soooo professional. Great set list and venue. beautiful night of classic Roxy!
@MrDrum22 good call - Dreamhome, Out of the Blue, Ladytron, Chance Meeting, the list goes on. On my list though, Stranded is only challenged by OK Computer, Graceland and Electric Ladyland.
just simply brilliant song. goosebumps and all everytime i hear it. i'm looking for more performances of this song, both audio and video. supposedly a bootleg out there has it. did they do this song at concerts back then? the studio version with the welsh choir is simply killer, period. fortunately, i'm old enough to have listened to rm when i just out of college. timeless music, isn't it.
@tpmetp This is where I admit that Stranded was the first album I ever bought (my mum was with me at Smiths on Royal Avenue in Belfast when I bought it, with my own money I might add). And hey, its still up there in the all time top 10. Strong strong memories.
Saw them at the SECC in Glasgow last fri 28th, and it was one of the best gigs I've been to. Brilliant atmosphere, and all the classics. Worth every penny.
I saw Roxy perform this on The Stranded tour in 1973 at the famous Glasgow Apollo. The crowd kept time clapping out on the beat for the entire song. It's one of many great memories seeing top 1970's bands at the venue.
This is one of the most extraordinary songs ever to have been produced by a rock band, or indeed any band. Why is Roxy Music known mainly for lowest-common-denominator crap like Angel Eyes and not for pure genius like this?
This is just awesome. What a spectacular performance. If you're not rolling on the floor in hysterics by the time Ferry snaps his fingers and reaches for the harmonica you're not human...
@captainvaritek They were different weren't they? Try on his coat, a mantle so fine. Who the fuck else would have written that, whatever it means. Even if they are still flogging their arses around the circuit for a few quid, that early stuff was totally original. Like John Peel said , 'where the hell did that come from'?
Superb. One of the most underrated songs of all time. Beautifully written. The dynamic is miraculous;from an almost whispered prayer to a stirring inspirational refrain made by patient subtle and utterly accomplished musicans backing a messianic vocal performance. forevermore!

Stranded is the best Roxy album and this is one of the few times that the live show works as well as - or better than - the studio version. Only missing the Welsh Male Voice Choir in the background... I'm not religious (my mate thinks the words are contrived) but emotion is there in spades. This is big memory music at its very best.
@madmudrock for me for your pleasure is their best album ,,but saying that their first three albums are their best ,,and yes only missing the taff choir
Supernaturally Inspirational. Abortion clinic bombing music. Digging up deceased black panthers and waterboarding them music. For me this one along with " Dream Home " epitomises this remarkable man's unique and varied slant on contemporary music, The Master in all his glory and more important to mankind than the discovery of the wheel and electricity, what a hero to have for the past 39 years
To write this at 16 shows maturity and talent way beyond years.

As a lifelong Roxy fan this has to be one of the greatest live performances by them. Bryan Ferry's vocal is amazing and is superbly backed up by the rest of the gang. Simply the best, as we all know!
The studio version is a little smoother, but I would sell my soul to see Bryan Ferry live again, especially if I could go back in time to when "stranded" was released.
OUTSTANDING live version of this song. They lock into a groove and they *cook*. Great alto-sax. And Ferry, as usual, is mesmerizing. Thanks for posting it. I still have to get the recent DVD release with this on it. One for the ages. Nobody rocks a white dinner jacket like Bryan.
@moondough Can you pleeeease tell me the name of the DVD that this is on and where it is available, as I would love to buy it for this performance alone. Thanks.
Back in college (1988) I was at a bar and this song was on the jukebox. Naturally I just had to play it. One of my classmates, knowing I was the one who selected it, came up to me, rolled his eyes and said, "Bryan Ferry sucks. His voice is awful." Suffice to say, I just laughed in his face and walked away. Long story short: To this very day I've never heard a more ignorant comment.
This is SO different to their other work. Almost a negro spiritual. Can you imagine if they had issued this and nothing else? Their reputation would have been quite different. And you cannot imagine that this is the same Ferry who once wore all those glittery glam rock outfits. Is Ferry a god-botherer?
I wondered when I first heard this if BF was mocking the TV evangalist with this song or if he was really wanted to do a sincere religious song. It really doesn't matter, it just goes to show you that he can sing anything - 50's, dylan, crooning 30's, pop or discotheque sexy - he can do it all! Forever More - Forever More!

As a lifelong Roxy fan this has to be one of the greatest live performances by them. Bryan Ferry's vocal is amazing and is superbly backed up by the rest of the gang. Simply the best, as we all know!

Paul Thompson's regular/irregular drumming still outstanding; never been matched.
Just gives me goosebumps

The word "Exquisite" does not do it justice.
