The only era of Bond I didn't like was Roger Moore - he was far too smarmy and overly corny. Lets hope Daniel Craig era directors stick with the current formula as IMO it works. Brosnan was doing so well until Die Another Day, what absolute abortion of a movie.
@rutgerusvan i heard that Dalton was going to do GoldenEye immediately after License To Kill (1989) but some of the producers and Vanessa Redgrave complained that he wasnt quite exactly good enough for another Bond Movie. 5 or 6 years they waited so till 1995 there came Pierce Brosnan...i had no problem with Brosnan till Die Another Day,it seemed like a good movie but it was too long and the producers didnt mantain to make this movie short,he was getting old that time
Nope, there were some legal wrangles between MGM and UA because of which Dalton got fed up and left the franchise. He could have done goldeneye but he left.Thats all
@rutgerusvan i know right? :/ he seemed like a pretty legit Bond person. if he continued with the franchise without the MGM/UA dilemma idk...GoldenEye probably might have been alright, early 90s like 1991 instead of 1995,but its seriously hard to tell though.
It's funny to see now, 20 years later that Dalton's movies weren't succesful that after 12 years of Roger Moore, people were expecting that all suceeding actors would play the role like he did. He did it for so long that Bond wasn't a dangerous spy anymore. Instead he turn out to be a 60 year old playboy with taste for jokes.
Dalton brought the real Bond back and was critisized for that. A real shame.
@bizarroeddie1 Don't blame Moore, blame the producers for not moving there ass to get a replacement sooner. Roger Moore was a very talented actor, he just got stuck in things for the long haul a lot in his career.
@bizarroeddie1 Absolutely agree man. Moore brought a comedic and playful approach to the role. Dalton was my favourite and craig is doing a pretty good job at keeping bond the way he was written.
Connery's Bond was a cold-hearted bastard in Dr. No -- works for me. I like Brosnan because he most closely resembles the description of Bond from Fleming's books. 6ft, 12 stone, black hair, blue eyes. And his Bond was pretty cold-hearted, too. So was Dalton and so is Craig. I guess there's a theme here. And yes, Die Another Day is Moonraker. Read Fleming's book.
The Living Daylights in my opinion, IS the last true James Bond film. Timothy Dalton is my favorite Bond actor, but needed more films. Licence To Kill was decent, as was Goldeneye, but not so great in my books. All that came after TLD was very flawed, except Casino Royale.
I am not a Dalton fan, but I have to recognize that both Dalton films left me a real so nostalgic sensation, I don't know why, because I have just recently saw them. I agree with Dalton is underrated.
I think that the dislike for Dalton's films come largely from mis information, and lack of vision on the part of those who level the criticisms. Dalton, to me, did what Craig does 20 years earlier, and I hope that history will see that.
@vader142 I agree 100%. Btw, Craig's first two Bond films, Casino Royale and Quantam of Solace, are similar to Dalton's 2 films. The first was more traditional Bond, the second, much less so. The irony is that Craig came damn close to being a two-time Bond like Dalton. Quantum was made in 2008, which is almost 4 years ago and MGM, which owns 50% the franchise went nearly bankrupt. Luckily, Bond 23 comes out in 2012 and Craig is still on board.
I love The Living Daylights, and when i think about it, it probably is my favourite film but the only issue with this film is the lack of realistic villains. Necros is superb and well played by the actor but Koskov is so poorly played by Jeroen Krabb as is Whittaker, I think we seen in Goldeneye what Joe Don Baker is better suited at playing at
@GrimKane Well said...couldn't agree more. He was a fresh face after 12 years of Moore. He was very unlucky that the Bond films were put on hiatus just in the moment he was getting in to it! Dalton was doing just what Craig was doing but 20 years earlier. I think due to the long Roger Moore years people were at that time not ready for such an immense change of interpretation. REAL shame.
I'm surprised people with taste and mature enough to appreciate a film this old would feel the need to announce that this is the best bond and this is the best bond film, you see it on every clip for almost every bond film actually, doesn't anybody like all of the films in general and realize what gives you your perception of what your "favorite" changes as it comes from things you learn and experience everyday, even which one is most prominent in your current memory helps influence this, growup
@mrmaestrom Nothing really. I can tolerate it, but it's such a drastic step down from Bond orthodoxy that I consider 'Living Daylights' to be the last real movie. Honestly, 'Licence To Kill' is actually quite good and I've become more fond of it as I've grown older, but it seems out of place with the rest of the "real" series. Maybe I'm just overly traditionalist... :D
I agree with Tokopol. TLD was where it all ended for me. As for LTK, it just was great, I mean it was decent and above average, but flawed, as was GE and all the rest that came after.

Dalton was way before his time. It's funny how for so many years he was ridiculed for being "too serious" and "too straight". Now as the years go by, and society evolves, you hear more and more comments about how underrated he was, and how amazing his two Bond films were.
@physicalgenius Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought that. Having read many of the original novels, I was surprised how closely Timothy Dalton resembled Fleming's depiction. And he was one of the better/grittier actors at it.
Here's what we got out of the unfortunately short Timothy Dalton era of Bond films........better action than the Connery films, better action and alot less cornyness than the Moore films, less special effects but still great action and story when compared with the Brosnan films, maybe more similar to the Craig films than any of the others, but still......Dalton as 007 in the late 80s is where it's at. The Living Daylights and License To Kill were cool becuz Dalton was cool.
@ad287 yes, dalton was really ahead of his time. he was unpopular during his era because everyone was used to Moore's humor/gags, while Dalton was gritty and serious.
But if you look at the newest films they are gritty, serious, and well-received. Dalton could play the part well if he was 20 years younger
you are correct. did you know that in 1970 t. dalton auditioned for the role ? he was 30 yrs. old. producers said he was too young. i admired his good looks. he was the 2nd bond i've enjoyed. i've met s. connery in the late 80's. he was a true scottish mannered man.
Which is interesting because he was tapped to play Bond years before he actually did. He was the choice to play Bond in Her Majesty's Secret Service but declined because he deemed himselft too young to play Bond at the time, and it went to Lazenby.
@ad287 I'll agree that Timothy Dalton's era of Bond was unfortunately all-too-short. But I love the Bond movies, ALL the Bond movies, and Connery gave us a Bond who could be brutal in a fight but smooth at the card table, or in bed with a babe, Lazenby gave us a Bond who lived in the moment, Moore provided a touch of comic book humor (and class), Brosnan gave us a Bond who reflected the best attributes of the previous Bonds combined, and Craig is giving us a Bond for our time, an actual human.
@deman7001 it would have starred roger moore if he hadn't chosen to retire. The production team wanted Moore to continue. In fact, the living daylights was originally written for Moore and not Dalton.
God, I miss Dalton as Bond. It's a real shame we only got to have him for two films. The guy was born to play James Bond. I've got nothing but respect for Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, Roger Moore, and the great Sean Connery, but Dalton was the best Bond. License To Kill is still my favorite.
I just couldn't put the title right to find it! I rewinded this VHS for this song! Thanks for posting this! Now if I can get the complete theme song for "The People",with William Shatner & Kim Darby! That music was just a peaceful instrumental. Thanks again!
Dalton was the best Bond. It seems like it would be hard to say that considering guys like Connery, Moore, and Brosnan have all played the part, but Timothy Dalton is still the coolest Bond. It's unfortunate that only played Bond in two films. Whether he admits it or not, I'm sure he regrets giving up the role that soon. His movies were good, action-packed, alot less corny than the Moore movies, hot chicks, good villians, good music too, that always helps. License To Kill is the ultimate.
if i am not mistaken they wanted Dalton to play Bond, but at the time Dalton thought Moore deserved it as he was too young for thr role, but Dalton was always the choice since his acting fitted perfectly as the Bond character
I agree. GoldenEye is about the best. Casino Royale was great too. Craig makes a great Bond. I didn't like Quantum of Solace. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is also a great, and often overlooked Bond film.
I don't think Fleming was that keen on Connery's portrayal to be honest mondeost2202008, Lazenby's film is spot on but blighted by some odd editing and dubbing...I reckon he would've made some fine films had he continued...Moore's are hit and miss and really only The Living Daylights shows Dalton's strengths. Bronson started well but trailed off...GoldenEye is the best Bond film ever but I don't know if he's the best Bond.
yeah GoldenEye its my favorite bond movie to and pierce brosnan is my favorite bond i think the old bond movies are best i like more old movies and music like 80s and 90s;)
same, i dont get why he only played in 2 bond movies i mean ya there was that lawsuit that lasted 5 years but still i wish he woulda said ya sure ill do goldeneye instead he said sorry im not interested anymore because the lawsuit took 5 years.
yeah i thought dalton was better than brosnan. i'm sure goldeneye would have been 10x better with dalton, although that's the only brosnan one i liked. tomorrow never dies woulda been better with dalton too. daniel craig isn't bad either. craig was amazing in casino royale. didn't think the newest one quantum was that good honestly.
I must say I really liked Maryam d`Abo. She is really hot

if i am not mistaken they wanted Dalton to play Bond, but at the time Dalton thought Moore deserved it as he was too young for thr role, but Dalton was always the choice since his acting fitted perfectly as the Bond character

GOOD SONG! Goldeneye is my favorite james bond movie. 2nd is Casino Royale
Streetwise39 2 years ago 2
I agree. GoldenEye is about the best. Casino Royale was great too. Craig makes a great Bond. I didn't like Quantum of Solace. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is also a great, and often overlooked Bond film.

craig- more of actions than words and the classic bond mixed with reality
brosnan- more like the modern bond of our time rather than the classic bond
dalton- serious
moore- humor
lazanby- not enough bond films to identify what kind of bond he is
connery- Ian Fleming's view of a perfect bond
Clive Owen- I wonder what a bond movie would be like if he would play as bond. Probably a mixture of craig, dalton and moore.

I dare anyone to make music like that again.
People had real talent, you can't even listen to today's music unless it's a trance remix of an old song.

We are always just spoiled, so we all have problems when someone new takes over the role.

Definitely agree, Dalton was probably the best bond and this was probably the best Bond film, in my humble opinion

same, i dont get why he only played in 2 bond movies i mean ya there was that lawsuit that lasted 5 years but still i wish he woulda said ya sure ill do goldeneye instead he said sorry im not interested anymore because the lawsuit took 5 years.
hondavtech96 3 years ago
yeah i thought dalton was better than brosnan. i'm sure goldeneye would have been 10x better with dalton, although that's the only brosnan one i liked. tomorrow never dies woulda been better with dalton too. daniel craig isn't bad either. craig was amazing in casino royale. didn't think the newest one quantum was that good honestly.
