Responding to the young man below -- Hello. I am a 59 year old, am a student of Sakyong Mipham RInpoche's. 4 yrs ago I started to have panic attacks, a very difficult time for a while. Mind can become detached from itself so to speak. Where do u live, do you have a desire to meditate on a daily basis. 10 mins a day is good. Please try to find a copy of Turning your Mind into an Ally by SMR. Very good instruction. Best 2 find a meditation ctr near you to have a group to relate to. Find heart.
Im 18 years old and suffering from panic disorder attack, im trying to learn to meditate i heard it helped because i dont want to take theese stupid pills the doc gave me.. can someone give me more info on what i should do on forms and such? and enviroment when u meditate
I guess all I'm saying is let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. But if we expect to hear helpful hints in the game of life from only perfect people and organizations, we'll never learn anything.
Which is not to say you aren't without justified criticism. Just, where should it begin and end is all ...
@jalemairliha , hi thanks for your responses. The deal is-for me-is the utter disconnect behind the public and private persona, where it would appear to me-imoo, again, that a shell game is going on. Claims of being an "enlightened" reincarnated 11th century Tulku, who wrote volumes upon volumes of "wisdom" that the Sakyong is taking credit for now, to me is such an arrogant 'pass' on his creds that he lacks, btw now. Yes meditation is always helpful, that someone may need a guru for this....
@tabacblonde .....strikes me as unnecessary. Just claiming my own personally hard earned knowledge about this character and the sound asleep ppl I found in his "inner" circle w/the constant clamoring for money and volunteerism. And the senior students always lording it over the newcomers that they just don't understand anything b/c they haven't received the "higher" pujas/rituals/initiations.....for me huge abuses of power and control issues/w/oneupmanship/and discounting anothers perceptions.
@jalemairliha : Well there are so many forms of meditation. Most use a mantra or the breath and there r books that can teach you how. It's not complicated imho. What IS complicated is sticking to it as a practice=that's where it gets difficult. To me the important thing is NOT to beat yourself if you don't do it 'perfectly' or 'just so'. It's a technique meant to calm, slow the mind, no more really than this. If it does more than this you'll know and do what is necessary.
Humans are full of flaws and I don't expect teachers to be anything less. So, is every word he utters without wisdom. I doubt it. Is every word he utters, wise? I doubt it. I'm capable of sifting.
But the idea and practice of meditation work for me at the moment. That is all.
It's all about money money money w/this crowd. Follow the money. The lama/guru system in this country has played itself out and has moved to China, again towards the buck. The tulku reign here is over and this dude thinks he can reinvent Dad's wheel and keep it going. Well, we're see. This group does no charity of note, mostly self promotes and is abt the most self absorbed group of characters I've ever .
They sell the concept of 'enlightenment' for a high price, the whole deal is an ego trip
@tabacblonde ... because we're paying big dollars to watch this video right now ...
Read the book. It's impossible to be ego driven and write those words. And no charity? Who cares! This technique (with or without a guru ... tho I think teacher is more appropriate) eliminates a lot of internal suffering. Because WE are the cause of much of our own.
@jalemairliha Honey I was a member of this group from the mid 80's to late 90's. Took Bodhisattva vows with the Sakyong. I've read the books, I hosted HHDL, done dathuns at RMDC for years, Kalapa etc... I've been through most of it and where I come from is my own/and my DH's as well, experience. Maybe we're the cause of some of our suffering and it comes from others as well. His books, the techniques don't resolve internal suffering, The hard work of relieving it comes from oneself. Cont.
I get that the hard work of relieving suffering comes from oneself. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's what I got from his book! Tools for one's kit, but the effort and practice come from self.
Frankly, since I'd never intend to take vows and dedicate myself to a guru I really don't care what he did/does in his private life.
Humans are full of flaws and I don't expect teachers to be anything less. So, is every word he utters without wisdom. I doubt it. Is every word he utters, wise? I doubt it. But I feel like I'm capable of sifting.
But the idea and practice of meditation work for me at the moment, and his technique seems to be unladen with hocus pocus and magic. That is all.
@jalemairliha One can be full of ego and write all sorts of words, books, techniques, etc... I've spent time w/many teachers including the Sakyang-I've seen the women brought in to "be" with him for the night, weekend,etc..b/c he wanted a hot babe around. The parties, the inner circles...are you kidding me? Ego's are a reality, one quite important to manuever this world. As Charlotte Joko Beck says: I wouldn't walk across a room to meet a teacher. She and I are in complete agreement on this.

@tabacblonde ... Ok, I get that. That's fair. So whom do you recommend as a meditation guide?
