Appalling how? Simply, he is an intelligent guy with humorous jokes that really only seem to get better every year, as does his political conversations. Maybe you should take a step into the present and stop watching videos from nearly 10 years ago. Basing David Cross' comedic excellence on an album that came out 9 years ago will lead you to, in my opinion, a false understanding of a comedian that has progressed immensely in recent years. Besides, name one comedian doesn't bitch and ramble.

Patton Oswalt doesn't bitch and ramble for ten minutes without a comedic premise; especially with the level of disrespect for the audience that Cross maintains. I don't think that Cross has ever said "I could be funnier" or "I could have performed better" to himself. He gets constantly heckled because he's not entertaining. What has he done in recent years in stand up comedy to prove otherwise? (Not sketch comedy, not a tv show, just stand up comedy)

Unfortunately, I'm a fan of genuine stand up comedy. Patton Oswalt is brilliant. Bill Hicks is amazing. George Carlin is a God. David Cross is a pretty decent character actor but his stand up is absolutely appalling. Yes Mr. Show was funny. No, David Cross doesn't know how to do long format stand up comedy. Pirate a copy of "Shut up you fucking baby" online and try to listen to two discs worth of bitching and rambling. Just saying things that people agree with isn't comedy.

I'm sorry if I went too harsh, nobody wins by being a prick on the internet. I just can't emphasize enough how disappointed I was when I bought "Shut up you fucking baby" which is the album he's promoting in this clip. It's really really bad. I've been doing stand up for about a year and a half now which means consuming and analyzing comedy in large quantities. I went out and bought a Carlin album and that disc and the disappointment was epic to say the least.

Ok, I'm going to ask you to do a personal comparison then. I own Werewolves and Lollipops and its available on multiple areas of the internet. I want you to listen to them both and compare them track by track and listen to a creative statement. Not "he saw this and said what he saw", but a statement that any run of the mill Bill Maher fan hasn't already said to himself. Cross doesn't carefully trim the fat from his set.

You said you listened to the David Cross CD, then went back and listened to Carlin and realized it was a disappointment in comparison. Who does that? Do you watch a movie, then go back, and watch like the Good, the Bad and the Ugly? Do you listen to some music, then go back and listen to Bach? Seems like a retarded way to go about judging something.

Just David Cross' witty sarcastic and cynical complaining is entertaining to me. Dude, you keep trying to rationalize what simply boils down to a matter of personal taste. I don't think Dane Cook is funny, but I'm not going to go on a Dane Cook video on youtube, deconstruct it and argue why it's scientifically not funny.

people like david kind of make conan uncomfortable it seems.....like, conan is funny and all, but hes way too preoccupied with keeping his NBC overlords happy by not crossing any lines or stepping on any toes....whereas david is more concerned with actual comedy...conan is just disposable entertainment, david is intelligent, raw, social commentary and i think this interview shows how they are from 2 different worlds, just by their body language and tone of voice in certain parts etc...

Anybody with half a brain would try to tone down their comedy to keep a show on a prime network like NBC. Conans comedy style is that of a writer, which is what he's always been. He also was brought up in an Irish Catholic home, so his silliness is what's funny. He's never really had crass or crude comedy. You can tell how uncomfortable he is doing jokes that are kinda crossing the line, but clearly they are written for him. David is hilarious as well. They are just 2 different types of comedy.

Richard Pryor set himself on fire by accident when he was under the influence of drugs. He was burned over a great deal of his body and I think incapacitated him a great deal. I'm sure it reduced his life expectancy given his early demise. But you can see the humor in it. It's actually funny if you don't have to think about it too much. Great talent.
