@dikmo35 Its called cadence. Its not supposed to be so direct. You just let the hammer bounce a few times while you think about your next move. Also saves the arm because it wears out quick if your trying to start and stop the hammer every few seconds. You hear the correct way at 3:03 when the guy makes them few little taps as he turns the bar. Its faint but you get the picture.
I worked wit two beautiful woman in my former work (with blacksmithing), they where both even better than me... Don´t think it appends on what between ones legs to hawe what it takes. (well said by me, not sure if i count as woman as well..., but if it was, certanly not a beauty one... :D )
be above the main body of the anvil!!!! wear eye protection ...pants and good steel toed boots. In 9 years of professional smithing i've had 3 close misses where glasses did save me from injury....2 were from me working and the third from an apprentice wire wheel brushing something 15 feet away.
I can understand the off strokes if its leading up to a striking technique, but typically she's putting too much into that wasted motion otherwise.
somebody needs to tell her beating on the anvil instead of the steel is a waste of time and energy, notice hoow shee hits the steel twice then the anvil twice. The man I served under would have chased me from the shop for that foolishness.
@mjr350 no he taught me to move steel under the hammer. something i still do every day. And you probably couldnt have learned anything from him. There are times you hit to the side as you move the steel to keep the "cadence" going but, steel once anvil twice is foolish. Antway, what the hell does it matter to you?
My first ever task as an apprentice was to turn a 25 x 12 bar down to 10mm round and then back to 20 x 10. Jumping it up as I go along. That's moving steel. Lucky for me I'd been bashing on the anvil with dad since I could hold a hammer so it came naturally. Felt sorry for the other green kids
But then again, what would I know.
Might wan't to read my comment to dikmo35 below so you know where I'm coming from with the cadence.
@ironmanforge : The only time I ever smack the hammer against the anvil is while I'm repositioning a bar, just to give my right hand something to do. The "strike work, strike anvil", afaik, is something that looked good in a movie sometime.
@mjr350 no he taught me to move steel under the hammer. something i still do every day. And you probably couldnt have learned anything from him. I can only wonder how She's going to look with an Eye Patch. Clear safety glasses aren't that expensive so there's no excuse for not wearing them. You only get one pair of eyes per customer! Teach Her to say Arrrrrrrrrrr now! Rrrrrrrrrrrr!
I think these guys are trying to discourage her from succeeding at blacksmithing. I've never seen such horrible instruction. Double tapping the anvil, no safety equipment, and most of all, incorrect grip on the handle. I bet her whole arm was in pain for several days after that pathetic lesson. Way to go guys! I doubt that she'll be back anytime soon. I'm sure they had a good laugh.
I'm fourteen and I just got into the craft about a year ago. I think I'm pretty good, and people tell me I am. I make knives. I think it's a great art, it's fun, and a great way to meet people.
No eye protection for her pretty eyes and no foot protection to be seen. If you could see how my work boots look and I ask you if you want to have your foot look like that. Also one piece of fire scale in her eye and she will be blinded. At 1500 degrees, it will boil her eye fluid and make it explode.
lol love the way they go without eye protection... All it takes is one hellohot piece of hot metal in your eye and whabam your in some righteous pain .... And sandals... bad idea...
This vidio has some redeeming qualities, but the anvil tapping thing is just stupid. Girl if you watch this video, don't do that. Not sure if you noticed or not , but your instructor does not do that when he swings the hammer. Waste of energy, time and heat.
She is hot, though my wife is prettier. These guys with sandals kill me! Are we going back to the Roman empire? Safety GEAR! Those grinders are ANNOYING! I have one and I can't stand the noise! Ear and eye protection!
we tap to take a rest and let the hammer bounce back up. it takes less energy than just stopping the hammer and starting it again. Yes there is a rhythm but you don't see anyone doing that with a power hammer because it doesn't get tired.
you tap the anvil to keep rythem, in this case its a bit useless but you got to learn it somehow. and if your anvil gets dits because of hitting it there are several possible problems: or you hammer is too hard or your anvil is too soft or bad quality or you're hitting the anvil in a wrong way for example
From what I saw...she taught herself some basic techniques. Who are the geniuses wearing sandles in a blacksmith shop? Before the forge was even fired up. you should have taught her how to hold the hammer and then how to swing the hammer. Another really cool trick is to hammer on HOT steel.
She is learning and i think she is doing quite well ! why did u have to give such a small rate ? have you been better 1st time when you worked with your hammer ?
@gagamax01 the low rating is from pervs who wanted to see a model in a bikini.....pree damn close though. shes beautiful. also its nice to see the profession being passed on.

wasting to much energy tapping the heel of the anvil after blows, & why on earth would anybody work on the heel of the anvil while drawing steel,

Don't tap the anvil between blows, it waste time and energy and it puts dits in the anvil face.
Start em out with modeling clay, to show them they are shaping not just beating.
For gods sakes put safety glasses on You only have two eyes.
