Have no idea if its true or not, but the story I heard (a long time ago) is that Larry did not like the tone of a low-priced guitar, and took this one out and shot it to pieces with a 22.
Very interesting - it sort of looks like the McCarty electrified pickguard of the time that you would expect to see on a Gibson, but the styling obviously is one of a kind. I wonder if those are P90 or Carvin pickups, or perhaps even Bigsby ones, used in that unit.
@AtlantaSpike Your guess is as good as mine. Notice during closeup ( 1:40 to 1:50 ) of Joe's guitar how the light reflects off of the pole pieces. very flat tops, not standard nor phillips nor Bigsby type. Fender? I have no reference picture of the McCarty unit but it may be a modification of that. Pretty twangy sound, though.
@AtlantaSpike Check that. You are correct. The McCarty pickguard unit came out in late 1948 in one or two pickup versions with non-adjustable pole pieces exactly like those in Mr. Maphis' guitar. Subsequently the unit was modified in Bigsby's shop. Elementary my dear Watson.
poor bassist standing there... not a prayer of being heard...

Luckily this was before their double-neck Mosrite days. You wouldn't have been able to see nine year old Larry otherwise!

Aww, he's tiny! I never saw a clip where he was that young before.
I guess he picked up the guitar shortly after he got out of diapers?

Awesome. The pickguard/pickups on the Super 400 Joe is playing is just crazy.

@AtlantaSpike The pickguard unit was installed by P A Bigsby; possibly designed by young Semie Moseley while he worked for Bigsby.
