I have this game on my master system, but I always sucked at it. My deceased cousin used to be an excellent player though. Coicindentally, I also got the Mega Drive version of Hang-on one year later and guess what I was also crap at it!
What buttons do you have to hold to get to play it? I can play the snail maze one, but can't get any of the others. I have the original NTSC model, BTW
Great game for the Master System. Colourful and nice conversation from the original arcade game. The scrolling is verry nice and fast. Thanks for upload and greetings to you

Thanks for posting this video! Good ole days! I still have my Sega Master System, Hang on/Safari Hunt built in like yours. Plus an additional 10 games. Ahhh, memories!
thanks for sharing this. it's so much fun to see how far gaming, graphics, and sound have progressed. still, those oldschool games will entertain me 4ever :-D
I remember how geeked I was the very first time I made it back to the first stage. I was about 8 or 9, and I felt like a million bucks when I finally managed to complete the first course. Man, great games never die.
I remember playing the demo at Sears back when Sega was top dog. My SMS came with the cartrige that had Hang-On and Safari Hunt. My laser gun cable lost connection right at the gun, so I had to hold it angled up unti it just stopped working altogether.
I like old skool sprite based driving/cycling games. There fun and not as complicated as say forza and all that. Hang on is just pick up and play fun.
I remember when I played this when I was young. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out why I every other motorcycle was way faster than me, and why if I did everything perfectly, I'd get the same game over screen every time.
@schieese Mine too, but I bought mine at Toy-r-Us and the ones with the gun were sold out, so I had the one with the HANG-ON / ASTROWARRIOR cartridge. MAN!!! MEMORIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >.<
I've forgotten all about this one. I was a Sega fan more than a Nintendo fan, so they hold more memories for me. Used to play this all the time - good old days!
haha how ironic, a snail race right? Man these games were so realistic to us, we never imagined PS3 and the lot. But give me a master system any day. I want to play the hunting game and shoot those damn fast Jaguars. LOL
This was so cool. I remember when the sky started turning orange for the later levels. And I'd get pissed when I'd see the checkpoint like ten feet ahead but the time ran out. LOL
I think Hang-On and safari hunt were the first built in games on the first Master System. Alex Kid: In Miracle World was later built into some of the first Master Systems too and early Master System 2 consoles. Finally I believe came Sonic The Hedgehog. I don't think Hang On was ever built into the Master System 2.
@fizzkid2000 i got one for christmas when i was little....it came with a cartridge but it also played without it.....weird i thought.....also came with a game kinda like duck hunt
So I thought the game would end at course 8, but I was surprised when it went back to 1 and kept going. I'm going to keep the game paused whenever I feel like taking a break, so I can race as long as possible.
It most likely did, it came built in with Safari Hunt on some Master Systems. It was also sold by itself (on cartridge and card) with Safari Hunt on cartridge and with Astro Warrior on cartridge. This video is off the built in game in the console.
@coenak This game came built in (along with Duck Hunt) in my Master System 1 purchased at the end of '91. when i got my Master System 2 i don't remember any built in games...
@coenak dont worry you werent the only one with the sega ms, while all my friends had the nes, my parents bought me the sega master. Obviously ive played hang on and safari hunt, i also had kung fu kid, my hero, the ninja (as you can see i loved martial arts games as a kid), out run, wonder boy and a bunch of others.. I always thought sega had better games and graphics but hey.. its like PC and MAC, quality doesnt always win the popularity game, its all on the marketing.
You made me go back in the good old times...about 20 years ago when I was a kid. Sega master system and Hang-on, just as R-Type and Alex Kidd were my whole life back then. I almost shed a tear, dude.
this seriously takes me back to when I was a little kid what a fantastic video and great driving skills this game was awesome (and free) this and spellcaster were two of my most loved games thanks for putting it up
Nice demonstration of Hang-On for the Sega Master System. I've never played a single SMS game, nor have I seen one in person. I even seen another YouTube video that was an old commercial for this game (only in Japanese). Nice of you to post this video to show what the home version of Hang-On is like in case no one ever gets to play this game. At least they know what it looks like and how it plays. Good job and great riding.
Well thank you. I appreciate your comment! Yeah, in the US most people don't even know what the Master System is. I only know one other person that had one and everyone else has no clue. They say, "Sega had a console before the Genesis?"
@coenak i know what you mean...after 20 something years i just learned today that there are 2 versions of captain silver (american/european)...US version only has 4 levels. looking for the european version on ebay
In the arcade version (which you can see in another YouTube video), the sky and ground are black. But it does look like the city is in the distance in the night stage of this video.
why was the master system so much better than the nes?! I only remember actually playing one once in my life, and I didn't get a good impression of it because the only games we played were utter crap. But all the vids on Youtube make it look great compared to the NES.
I remember playing this till my eyes were bleeding. I managed to complete all the courses once, but it just went back to course one and was gutted to spend all that time getting so far not to see a final end screen.
nah, NES and Master system are both 8-BIT and they have the same capabilities, it's just when some people make games they don't bother spending too long on making the game's graphics look good.
that great. i 'm french. i hope that you undersdant to me. so... I don't remember the game's name of master systeme. it was a fox with a bird. and this foxcan change in tiger or monckey... do you remember?? what is name???
I was given a second hand Master System and I used to play this game a bit, not bad for when it was released. The original Master System had better built in games than the Master System II, which I understand came with Alex Kidd, I'd much rather play Hang On, and Safari Hunt.
No, the stock game built inside the SMS console was "Snail Maze."
But HO did come bundled with "Safari Hunt" as a 2-in-1 cartridge (just as later sales of Nintendo's NES system had a 2-in-1 cart "Super Mario Bros." backed with "Duck Hunt" as a pack-in) included with the SMS in its early USA sales run.
