The Kyle Railroad is a short railroad line that runs from North Central Kansas into Eastern Colorado. It is based in Phillipsburg, KS and runs on about 600 miles worth of mostly former Rock Island Railroad's Chicago to Denver main line. The Kyle has been owned by Rail America since about 2002.
If you mean 'engineer', then what you are saying is totally untrue. You are subject to strict hours of service regulations which absolutely do not permit anything close to 24 x 7.
If you are talking about management who are not responsible for actually moving the trains, you are a bit closer to being correct.
However, it is a fascinating job. I've been doing it since college and I love it.
it does look interesting. but about a year ago i read wat a train oporator typed and he said that he is on call 24-7. i say train oporator because 'engineer' has a double meaning i guess: someone who disighns things, and a train opporator. but, if u say that 'engineers' arent on call 24-7, and if u are an engineer, then i would have to agree with u :)unless if 'on call' means that u might be called to go to work anytime
how does the engineer see?? or does he have is colleagues on the radio direct him when to slow down or speed up?? & How much do they get paid, I'm thinking about a career change...
He has a guy on the ground telling him what to do and how much to each crossing. Dont listen to "OMGLOOKihavenoname" you start off about about $10 and hour and after a few years get up to $35-$40 an hour. As for being on call you work for 8-12 hours then get to go on rest for a day. I would say to work for a shortline railway if you have a family. You would be home for dinner and the work easyier. If you work for a main line you stay where ever your time runs out for weeks on end.
Imagine if you didnt know there were tracks there and you just saw that wall of snow coming at you,the air horn would give it away but you would still be shocked I think.Fantastic stuff!
any job vacancies?? i dont mind paying to do that all day haha

not a lot, and dont even think about being a train oporater because u`ll be on call 24/7... which means u`ll be working 24/7.

He was probably a manager so he could in theory always be on call.
The crews themselves are required to have rest.

Very few shortlines are going to pay at a rate anywhere near the high end you mentioned above.
I also don't buy shortline work is easier (with the exception of being on the road).
Switching and running is the same.

Why the hell would we ever want to have to clean snow any otherway! This is awsome!(i.e.: Streets are overrated)

ya streets are overrated. We might have a good train infrastructure if those dam airliners didn't lobby against improving the train infrastructure...
