What the BBC production team keep on failing to realise is that war isn't a particularly nice scenario. It's easy to keep up a high moral tone when questioning someone's motives decades after the event, but I'm pretty certain that if most of us were put in thes situations we'd all have behaved like both sides did. What the BBC production team keep on failing to realise is that war isn't a particularly nice scenario. It's easy to keep up a high moral tone when questioning someone's motives decades after the event, but I'm pretty certain that if most of us were put in thes situations we'd all have behaved like both sides did. I feel I would have.

What is interesting in this documentary is that as it happened so many years ago and the people involved are not specting any more rewards, they were quite sincere. I know that in our country of 307 million people we have over 250 million guns. I live in a rural county and of the 20,000 people in our county the vast majority have guns, probably several thousand high powered hunting rifles with scopes. We also have a high % of 4 wheel drive vehicles. We would be hard to occupy, unless disarmed...

Partizans are Soviet civilians armed against german invaders GENIUS! It has nothing to do with the red Army crimes during WWII....Dont forget that SS troops deported whole Russian villages to death camps...
Maybe u call the French resistance during WWII "Spreaders of Terror" too...?

Just because the germans did crimes doesn't mean it is ok for the russians to do the same. If the French resistance go around terrorising civilians and stealing like the partisans, then yes, they are "spreaders of terror" too.

Standard treatment of collaberators by internal resistance. The British organised resistance were given sealed orders telling them not only to kill actual collaberators, but potential ones..... Their strategic purpose was even more terrifying. Churchill was prepared to destroy not only the country but millions of civilians to in order to free Britain. Check out "Auxiliary Units"...

@Bazanadu Pretty standard in all war, if you think about it. Nothing ruins a soldier's day like a civilian tossing a hand grenade into his or her bunk. That's war. Objecting to war does not end it. The same goes for rapine. Somehow, it is thought that the Germans did not rape the Russians. Instead, the current propaganda says that Russia raped Germany.

What i meen is it seems burning villages is not a war crime if ALL ARMIES did it and still do it. It seems to be a military strategy. And it seems to be also a propaganda strategy when we only accuse germans for having do it! ;-)

Not necessarily. He's recalling this stuff from the past and for many people , relating the past requires them to imagine that they are there while relating it. It's actually rather unlikely he would do the same thing today but it's also important to remember that at that time, burning down a village or second thoughts about the matter were last on his list of worries.

Sorry by the way, I'm not trying to excuse him but simply explain that you may be misinterpreting his feelings about the matter. Don't forget that in wartime, disobeying an order is usually a crime punishable by death in most of the world's militaries.
