ive been playing guitar for just under 2 years now. il be doing grade 8 in the next few months, already learning 667. i havnt done 1-7. practice makes perfect, you can play a hard song if you give yourself enough time to learn it.
Cool man thanks! Yeh I actually looked at some courses at uni that had music in them and it said stuff like need an A in Higher Music or a Grade 6... Lol which I don't have either of but oh well xD
ahh luckily for me, I do Music BTEC and Music Technology at a Sixthform, which im getting distinctions and A's. Soooo, im okay academically, its just these bloody grades!
Aw man cool, I actually wanted to do a course at uni in Music Technology, like its hard to find a decent course on stuff I actually want :P Like I would love to be a music video director lol but what sorta course do I need for that? Lol.
Cool :) Its either that or I'm gonna do a course in Computer Games Design, which I think would be great fun lol but it also has that aspects of media and story writing in it which can relate to Music Video directing... lol xD
dude i really reccomend doing some grades like 5 r summin before you go straight into 8 because you really need to get into the vibe of doing em, and its not always the difficulty of the pieces thats hard
I'm thinking about doing the same - just get a grade 8 book and try and get in for the next bunch of things - then when you say "I'm going to be doing a grade 8 in (whatever month)" maybe they'll give you a conditional offer based on you getting a decent grade in it - that's what I'm hoping at least :p
Ok, Thanks very much ! Oh by the way, ive only been playing guitar for about seven months, and im completely self taught so thanks for your help. What does "sight read" mean ? And is it very hard to learn to read music? Thanks
Sight read means play as you read, like reading a book aloud.
Its not too hard but it all depends on what you are trying to play, obvious sight reading a grade 8 piece is harder then sight reading a grade 1 piece.
it taks a lot of practice to sight read, keep at it.
@MediaExtra Easy - get yourself a copy of the William Bay book called 'Mastering the Guitar 1A'. You'll be reading in no time at all. Move on to 'Music Reading' for Guitar by David Oakes - that will get you up the neck more than the first 5 frets
Ive got a question, if you go to rockschool to play the guitar, do you have to read and play by notation or can you do tab ? Thanks! Great performance man !
@pedroEmaj7 Also, there are sections of the exams where in you are required to sightread. Well, you can do sightreading or improvisation, until grades 6-8 I think, wherein you must do both.
why would a grown man spend 100 euro on this? I mean come on push yourself a bit, there's no point to doing the first seven grades in my view after playing for three years! The grade 8 is simple! go learn some real songs and put some effort in! I mean I'd be far more impressed if you could play and sing, say, blackbird by the beatles. It sounds nice and has some basic skills, this is a waste of money, you've pretty much spent 100 euro (book and exam) to learn how to a hammer on and pull off!!
I have been playing for little over about 18 months now, my grade 4 is booked and I am working on my grade 5. At this rate I will be grade 8 in 3 or 4 years.
Thats what you reckon I should be? Am I pushing myself enough?
Grades 1 to 7 are around for a reason. If you said to a complete beginer "go straight to grade 8" you would distroy them!
Na Gammypage is completely right, sorry but you could just keep practising any songs you want with tab without having to book shit for anything and you could play grade 8 by 3 years on, i suggest you stop booking and buying and just practise like most guitarists
im saying this out of experience, trust me, dont waste your cash, just get grade 8 when you are ready, rather than work your way through all the grades just wasting money.
gammypage, wasnt saying "go straigh to grade 8" he was only implying that you dont need to pay 100 euro's (or whatever it is) to go through the first seven grades. by al means learn the peices but you dont need to pay to complete it, then move on. after grade 8, you will have spent 800 euros. when you could have not taken the first seven exams, and still walked away with your grade 8, except it cost you 700 euros less.
Well...my thoughts on it is that someone who sits the grades studies harder and I know I do.
One example, you go straight to eight and I beleive you have no ear tests so you have missed all of that essential learning out just to go for a higher "rank" so to speak.
I am actually on grade 6 now.
It doesnt really matter to me as it seems to everyone else that I did grade 1, 2 3, 4 & 5.
I am pleased I did them as it made me the guitarist I am today.
what a stupid comment! some people need to start with the basics! learning through the grades help people learn the basics and then build on this. don't be a complete tool.
They have a point though, I personally did grade 3 after a year of teaching myself, then moved onto grade 5, have decided to take a break from exams and will do grade 8 either next year [nov] or the may exams after that.
You should buy the grade books, and when you feel you've got them down to a T, just move onto the next grade, don't bother with the exams. The highest grading you take is the only one that really matters.
obviously start with the basics. gammypage was just saying you dont have to pay 100 euros to book ever exam, and you can learn the first 7 grades, but dont pay to get yourself graded. just practise for 3 or 4 years till your better at guitar and are able to play grade 8.

How do I get graded? What do need to do to get a grade? And what exactly does having a grade mean and waht can you do with it? Lol.
RobinA0 2 years ago
grading is just a way to show off in my view.
it sucks really. Im looking to get into uni next year with my guitar.
and the course i want requires grade 8.
ive never done a grade, but ive done my research, and grade 8 is absolutely easy.
but becuase ive never done the grades, I have to travel all the way there for an audition instead of just handing in an application.
answer to your question, gets you into music jobs/uni's easier :)

Its all tabbed and with notation.
You do need to be able to read notation but not "sight read", key signature, note duration and so on.......

Thats like going straight to black belt in Karate, you work up and dont go straight to the top.
I admit you can skip a few, I already have but seriously you cant just straight to the top.
I learnt from the bottom up and I am now after 2 years at grade 6.
The exams push me, keep me on my toes and make me rehears loads, thats why I do them.
I can afford to take the exams so I will keep at it.
