Nice work. Was this for a highschool project? Were you expected to do a full 3D animation? Or would you have been allowed to do like a couple of frames of animation that explains the operation?
Because if this is for highschool level stuff, that's pretty cool that they're teaching you 3D Studio Max too.
its not that hard really, its a tube and a helix. The tube is path deformed around the helix. Then to animate it you can simply adjust the height over time on the helix.

its timed to match up to a narration which I don't have permission to use. But without sound I agree its too long.

but having the actions repeated over and over again slowly allowed me time to think and absorb how it works :)

its too long because i don't have the narration that goes with it. if i were able to post the narration it would be paced a lot better.
