@chardtomp yea sadly. They sank her in November 2003. I left for the Monterey that October. That's when I came to understand what people meant when they said "The grass ain't always greener on the other side." LOL
Chief Tiff, this is Senior Chief Walker served aboard Fletcher 1981-1985. Kudos to our ally in the world but if I had been onboard the ship in full operation, Your sub would have been visiting Davy Jones Locker. STGCS(SW) C. E Walker USN ret. USS Fletcher Top ASW ship in the Pacific Fleet 1983-85.
My American friends, you're probably going to dislike me for this, I was the Chief Tiff (A-Ganger) onboard HMAS WALLER that removed the safety screw of the torpedo prior to loading it into the tube to do this.
But I tell you what, hearing that detonation underwater, I will never ever forget that sound, then about 5 seconds later, the next loud crack was that of the Fletcher having her back broken.
The Fletcher had an open house in the port of San Francisco back around 1975 when she was new and I was young. A Missile Cruiser called the Richmond K Turner was having an open house at the same time. Both of those ships were spit and polish that day.
I came onboard Fletcher just before she moved to Hawaii and stayed on her for three years. There were a lot of memories both good and bad associated with her. RIP old girl...
The sinkex provides new data about time to sink, life lost, and numerical data about survivability and other war facts. These exercises are very important to the rest of the fleet. So when you hear about a sinkex ask what did we learn? What can help improve shipboard survival in accordance with specific theater threats.
Transferred off the ship in Japan in 1990. I almost lost my orders due to being a "True Drunken Sailor" coming back from liberty. SK1 wrote up 3 MS's for talking after hrs. Give me a break! They were sober and having a good laugh! I decided to make rukus the next night and make a point! Sk1 wrote me up and Suppo didn't want me to lose my orders. So no one got written up! Hahahhah to Sk1! Memories! I had a good time serving on her! All positive! Adios and Obrigado! TCHAU!

My Uncle is the former CO of this ship 2000-2002. Thought I'd look it up just to get a visual, but didn't expect this! Sorry she had to go.

I served onboard 84-87. A sad ending for a great ship.

So sad, what a wasrer, it was only a 24 year old vessel in service. A waste of our money, just because it had no VLS capability. Sad
