My brother has property near Mt. Shasta in N. Calif and I may buy something there this summer and like to build a log home, just a small one for myself, no family or anything. 1 big room, loft for sleeping. Most available timber is pine or fir. Around and above an abandoned gas station, back in 1972, I used bolts and nuts to build a restarant with a foot print of 40' x 60' with 3-br upstairs. I did most of the work because I had no money to hire contractors. But it took me ten years to complete the building though ! It is the " slowest " way to build a post and beam building ! A high efficiency house! The room is small, so it don't need a big heating and wood has got a 6 times better insulation than concrete. That means for a 20cm wood wall you will need a 120cm concrete wall...
