I've asked and have received the upgrade before. It's easier to upgrade on international flights i've found.

Great advice... Fly a lot and use frequent flyer miles... NO shit. Thats the big tip? That's like saying I can get you into the champagne room at the go go bar.... pay them 200 bucks. The idea is that you have same great advice not common practice.

Russ, Peter Greenberg2 says never ask for a upgrade, im lucky i fly business most places unless im flying with my friends for a long weekend away and when i have enough miles on my Emirates skyward card i buy Y class ticket and use miles to upgrade to J class, one of my friends turned up at the check in desk with a bottle of wine plus a box of chocolates for the check in lady!! did not get a upgrade but got a lounge pass instead which saved him money on drink and food..
