  • I had 2 learn how 2 drive manual bymy self.

  • A few things you forgot is that you don't have to use the clutch or break when turning the car on but you can only do this with it in neutral, and when you stop at red lights or whatever you can go into neutral and release the clutch fully with the break or hand break on with out any stalling thus works similar to a clutch by keeping the motor running. Oh and always use 2 feet for the pedals, and when down shifting to slow down use the break to help.

  • Wtf need to be in first gear ? Can start on 2 just give it more gaz..

  • @MrThePLP you can but it puts more strain on the engine and clutch making them more likely to be damaged.

  • @muttley299 Your right but I dont do this often this is only depending in witch situation (sometimes usefull)

  • what car is that?

  • i dont understand why u need to have ur foot on the break pedal while starting the car???

  • @striker048 casue once the handbrake if off the car can roll forward or back so you need the brake to keep you still

  • @striker048

any car that is manual does not have a parking "gear" brake... as a result a car thats off is kept in neutral, but because its neutral the car isn't braking, its free to gravity THEREFORE when the car is off the e-brake is kept on but when you turn it on you take off the e-brake and hold the brake so the car doesn't fall anywhere

  • i hate cars i love horses!!!!!!!!! they have no gears and engines. :)

  • when you are putting your car into park you have to step on the brake AND the gas??

  • @RunsLikeaNose yeah and also clutch after...or your car will die :D

  • I think everyone should drive manual transmisson to begin with, because it requires focus all the time at first, and by the time you don't have to think as much about shifting and starting off ect.. you've developed really good driving habits.

  • Retard americans ... keep poluting ... driving automatic cars

  • Pooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooop!

  • i suk with pullin out lol. i can rape gears just pullin out i suck at it lol.

  • the thing is u gotta have an empty place to first try driving a manual car.....................

  • get some new shoes

  • Push the gas down around 3 to 4k rpm and drop the cluster fairly fast and peel out :D

  • this is a miata ?

  • Tacs are for pussys

  • Worst video ever.

  • @jmrub06 WHATS SO WORST ABOUTIT? A SMALL SENTENCE DOES NOT HAVE MERIT. WHY IS IT WORST. THE KEY OF LEARNING MANUAL IS PRACTICE, PRACTICE, AND MORE PRACTICE. I UNDERSTAND THE VAST AMERICANS USE AUTOMATIC. COME ON!!! HANG UP THE PHONE, PUT THE DRINK AND THE HAMBURGER DOWN, AND DRIVE!!!!

  • wow this is seem so hard.

  • you dont need to step on the clutsh & breek win starting

  • @browser651 u need to step on the clutch only. :D

  • @browser651 depending on your car, yeah you do. My F-150 won't let you start it unless both are held down, it's kind of annoying

  • whats the red light thing near shifter i got on in the same place never knew what it was.. plz reply

  • i have a manual car and i love it.

it makes me feel so in control like im a part of the car and it makes me really pay attention to what im doing.

i always feel like im doing something wrong when i drive one of my parents cars (im 17) and i dont shift lol

  • u dont need to apply the footbrake when starting since u already have the handbrake engaged.

  • When learning to drive, it should be mandatory to be taught to drive a manual transmission. There are so many people who can barely drive an automatic.

  • @HurdleHopping The best way to learn that part is to lift the clutch slowly until you reach the bite. Then hold the clutch pedal at that very position until the car starts moving. Then slowly release the clutch when you are in motion.

Go and practice in an empty car park or something away from other cars.

You dont actually need to use the accelerator to make the car move. Learn how to make the car move without it first and you will be a good driver :)

  • I got it!! haha after soo long i was shifting at such a low RPM. I have to shift at high RPMs at around 3000. It doesnt slip/jerk almost at all. Thanks everyone for your help.

    God Bless All.

  • no i wont use the e brake, ill leave it in gear thanks.

  • This seems just a bit easier. I've been driving an automatic and might want to learn just in case I get an automatic. I may practice driving one this weekend. I just have to get used to the 3rd clutch and gear shifts.

  • HELP HELP!!!

Wheneever im trying to switch from 1st to 2nd the rmps drop like a mofo and it jerks what am i doing wrong!?!?!

  • @Ferrari360Spyder you might be shifting at the wrong time

  • @Ferrari360Spyder make sure your shifing between 2000 - 4000 rpm, also if the shifts are really jerky it may have something to do with your transmition, so if it keeps up. maybe take it in.

  • @Ferrari360Spyder Hey there. I think that you could be taking too long to shift. If you take too long to shift, the rpms will often drop lower than they normally would. This causes the synchro to boost your rpms quickly to keep the engine going which can cause jerkiness. Also, try to work on modulating/balancing the clutch. It takes a lot of practice, but is well worth it in the end. Hope this helps! Let me know.

  • @Ferrari360Spyder you are not reaching an optimum RPM in first gear i.e., 2500- 3000. The second gear won't be happy if its not accepting enough RPM from the first gear. Therefore the car will jerk and stutter.

  • @Ferrari360Spyder You're taking to long to shift or you're shifting before reaching a high enough speed.

  • 7:04 its 420!!!

  • dont press the clutch when starting your car it puts un nessasary pressure on the fly wheel making the starter moter work harder to start the car..

  • @yadayada696 mine wont start without the clutch depressed

  • @yadayada696, all modern vehicles have a clutch safety switch that must be engaged or the car will not start.

  • @sexcation Not heard that one before... mind you, im in the UK so it might be different over here.

  • @yadayada696 you have to press the clutch to turn on a standard

  • funny sounding naration

  • if you need a tutorial to drive an automatic car, then you must really suck...I have some things to say to the video owner: 1. you don`t have to be in neutral to start your car(just press clutch while in 1st gear and you can start the engine.try it if you don`t believe me).2.at diesel motors you can put the car in motion with your clutch only(no gas pedal needed). If you are trying to teach somebody,at least teach them right:))

  • @euistarzan sorry...i meant to say manual

  • @euistarzan 3. NEVER do a hillstart like in this video, you will end up rolling back into somebody. In fact, its wise to not release the handbrake before you get to the clutch bite anyways, hill or no hill.

  • so usefulllll

  • what the fuck is it with people and shitty quality, fuck this!

  • Guys, you do not have to have clutch engaged to start the car, this is a bad practice. Just ensure you are in neutral and hand brake applied.

  • @brocklagan yea I was watchin this video and i knew it was strange that he had to have his feet on the clutch and brake

  • @brocklagan yeah you do, my car wont start unless i press down on the clutch pedal

  • Easier done than said. FUCKING HELL.

  • u americans have big feet i cant see the damn pedals this is the 3th guy i watch with big sneakers

  • but when you start the car, rpm goes up!

  • Comment removed

  • You should never give it gas when starting, unless your car is having trouble starting. Never do this for manual or automatic cars. It is a very wrong and unsafe practice. If your car happens to be in gear and park brake not engaged, it's disaster waiting to happen.

  • @randompop101, the booklet in the glovebox of my car instructs me to give some gas when starting if the engine is warm. I don't think it's unsafe.

  • @tupsumato giving gas when starting is only done in very cold weather or cars with fuel pump problems. As soon as your key turns through the accessory notch, the car automatically pumps gas for you. Pumping gas while starting is a total waste of fuel and dangerous because when your car is in gear and you give gas, the car will lurch forward violently and stall. You sound like a beginner.

  • @randompop101, the manual of my car is only concerned about the temperature of the engine (cold - don't give gas; automatic choke engages vs. warm - give some gas (to prevent automatic choke from engaging?)). It's the same regardless of air temperature, and I've noticed that it works best if you do as the book says.

    .

Also, I have the e-brake engaged and press the clutch when I start the car so it won't lurch forward even if it was in gear (as it usually is when it's been parked).

  • @tupsumato Giving gas while starting is a very wrong procedure. I hope your driving instructor taught you this. Most cars nowadays will pump gas for you, so giving gas while starting like I said is a total waste of fuel. If the clutch happens to fail, your car will launch forward accidentally if you give gas. That is WHY ALL PRO drivers, instructors, including millions of experienced drivers tell you to put your right foot on the brake and left foot on the clutch.

  • @randompop101, my driving instructor didn't teach me anything about that because I learned to drive in a 2000s Toyota with EFI etc. while my own car is an early 1980s Ford with carburetor etc. I'm just doing what the booklet says because here no-one else drives such an old car.

    .

If the clutch fails while starting, which sounds very unlikely, then yes, the car will move forwards a bit, but considering that the e-brake is on and the fact that the car only has 69 hp, it won't be much.

  • @tupsumato If it's a crappy old car you are talking about, then yes, go ahead and give gas. Just don't come on Youtube and start teaching people how to drive. YOU PUT YOUR right foot on the brake EVEN in an automatic car, not mentioning a standard car. If your instructor didn't teach you to depress the brake while starting, then he should be fired. Some newer cars won't even let you start unless you depress the brake.

  • @tupsumato when I'm telling you something right, don't pretend you know better and start arguing back just because some little booklet told you to in an ancient car.

  • @tupsumato By the way, clutches do fail. It is not uncommon. I've been driving my manual transmission 98 Civic for over 8 years and it has happened. When you give gas, it doesn't just move forward. It fucking jumps forward ok? I've changed the clutch 3 times now. When u drive an automatic, guess why you cannot shift out of P unless u press the brake? THis is STANDARD operational procedure.

  • @randompop101, clutch fails have never happened to me or any of my friends, but I guess it's possible. If it fails, it just drops, right? I don't think my engine produces enough power and torque at low rpm (I don't floor the throttle, just give some gas) to make the car move more than a feet or two before it stalls because the rear wheels are, after all, locked. As for automatics, I have never driven one so I don't know how they work. Three clutches over 8 years? You must be driving a lot!

  • @tupsumato If you give gas when whether is extremely cold, such that your gas line is half frozen, you will damage your car. As to why millions of advanced, experienced, or professional drivers tell you to put your RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE, please refer to my other post. I do not give a shit what that booklet says. You should only give gas in warm weather and when your car has trouble starting, such as low battery or on a hill.

  • @randompop101, fortunately it never gets that cold around here. I don't give gas when it's cold because it would prevent the automatic choke from engaging, making life difficult for everyone.

    .

Perhaps the engine, being quite old, requires some input from the driver when starting. It will start even if you don't give it gas, but you'll have to crank it for a while and the automatic choke might engage, resulting in insane idle rpms for a while.

  • @randompop101, of course in modern fuel-injected vehicles you're not supposed to give any gas ever, even in cold weather. Should've mentioned that in the first post...

  • the correct way to start the car is to have your foot on the brake

  • @randompop101 lol are you crazy? why would you start car with your foot on the brake? you have to have it on the clutch...

  • faggot

  • Don't try this on a Toyota Matrix manual 5-speed. They fail even when you do it right. Still have my orginal brake pads, transmission replaced. Edmunds has a page for Matrix manual transmission failures! Toyota quality is a myth.

  • and u wont stop moving forward in tht

  • lol i hate the recurring static sound during the video.... but appreciate it!

  • sorry for criticizing, but he rolled back way too far on that hill. he should have released the clutch quickly while doing a heel-toe type of thing to keep the car from rolling back. if done correctly the car shouldn't have moved back more than 5 inches. otherwise, this was a good tutorial and i can see an amatuer learning from this video well.

  • check if gear stick is at neutral position. start the engine and then lower the handbrake. no need to hold the brake pedal

  • Unless your on a Hill.

  • Man this looks fun! thanks for the tutorial actually looks kinda of simple just gotta practice a bit :)

  • It seems like such a pain in the ass. It also looks kinda fun though.

  • my cousin he drifts his mx-5. his his black with black wheels hes taught me when i was 13!!!

  • That's a nice little film. It is sad that stick shift instruction in the US is near impossible to find at any price.

  • Comment removed

  • Yea, sadly most Americans have no idea what a manual transmission is, much less how to drive them. I love my manual. :D

  • That is not true for most of the US, european people must be laughing at your comment. In Canada everyone who drives, is familiar with both styles, if not can drive both.

  • Last I looked only 6% of cars sold in the U.S. will even be offered with a manual transmission, as an option, with slushbox being the OEM, so, yes, it is true.

  • Ok....so 6% of newer vehicles, what about older vehicles where manual trans is the norm, in "GASP" most AMERICAN cars. Besides just because it is not exclusively used doesnt mean that people dont know how to operate them, let alone what they are. You know we have other things with a manual trans other than cars, ATVs and such? SO, NO. IT IS NOT TRUE. .....fack

  • Actually ATVs and scooters are very difficult to find with a manual tranny now in the USA.

  • Here's a fun homework assignment: Find three driver's education schools in the United States of America that offer stick shift instruction on their own vehicle and then post your list on this comments section.

  • Sorry Teach' Homework is for people with learning disabilities. Why the fuck would I do that? Just because that isnt what the drivers education centres use doesnt mean people dont know what they are or how to use them. Auto is easier to learn obviously, why would they offer manual? They are meant to teach you to drive safely, clutch and shifting would just be another lesson and more of your money spent, On something you can learn in 10 minutes on a back road with a good teacher.

  • To park You hold the gas and brake? Do you mean brake and clutch?

  • gas and clutch

  • Yeah that was confusing but thanks for clarifying!

  • at first i thought stick shift was hard but then i tried driving manual and it was easy all you really need to pay attention to is how to put it in to first then from there on its pretty basic!!

  • i like it and it kinda helped

  • o93823874754 watever shut up ive seen ur comments on all stick shift vids. if u kno how to drive it stop waching the VIDS!

  • holy shit , the nikes look like bad ass driving shoes. i need to find some. my skate shoes just arnt cutting it.

  • how do you " remove " the hand break and the clutch to drive a manual?

  • remove handbrake...

push the small button and put it down... for old heavy cars the handbrakes has buttons on the side then you rotate it clockwise and push it in...

i have a vid that has the old car type handbrake

  • Never mind, Mazda Miata.

  • What car is that?

  • good job dude this is probably the best video ive seen on learnin how to drive a manual

  • Jajaja, in europe we drive with manual change

  • is driving a manual easy

cause i was looking for a car

    im 17

i learned how to drive in an automatic

    is manual any harded?

  • In europe where I live, manual is standard. I´ve only seen an automatic shift once in my life. It´s a little tricky at first but you get it down with some practice. I don´t even have a license yet and I can drive it. Took about 2-3 tries with my dad. Also, it´s more fun that an automatic imo.

  • 10 times harder give me somethign to comunicate and i will tell you personally everything

  • I only drive manual and its not hard at all, you only have to get used to it, and when you do its much more fun and you feel you're really driving ;p

  • you just hold in the clutch when u shift let off the gas.. fly through the gears, when u slow down same thing except your downshift... just have 2 get used 2 it, way more fun also

  • yes manual is a little bit hard at first till you get use 2 it. when i first got my manual car a couple days of me driven and stallin i told my self why the hell did i buy a stick shift car but now ive been driven stick for about 6months now and i can shift without even thinkin about it and its really fun to drive once your good at it

  • Heh, I didn't realize until about 3 minutes in that this was a Miata, which is embarrassing because my car is almost identical (the one in the video appears to be a very early NA model.) When I watch it again, it's really obvious: I can recognize the pedals at 0:20, the center console at 0:47, the gauges at 1:31, the Miata floor mat at 2:23, the steering wheel at 2:49, and of course the exterior confirms it later in the video, but the first time it took me until 2:54 before I put it together. :)

  • stop farting!

  • what kind of car is this?

  • mazda miata

  • just save me $3000, auto car expensive then manual car

  • it doesnt have to be in first to start, its a tach or tachometer not a rpm guage and a speedometer not a mph guage and you dont need the hand brake as long as its in gear and you dont judge by rpms. you go by feel. i can get my 944 moving with 1200 rpm. 200 rpms above idle.

  • Sweet the car's clock says 420 at around 7:00

  • Comment removed

  • just learnt how 2 drive manual the second time now and i went alright! =) now i jus gotta remember which gear 2 put it in with out my sister having 2 tell me. but manual isnt that hard as i thought it was. pretty tiring tho LOL =)

  • Yeah its def tiring, especially in traffic lol. My sister is the one that taught me too. Many many years ago lol

  • ty this helped if u can drive a manual car u can drive anything

  • yeahhhh a miata!

  • its much easier than it sounds. lol

  • Thanks this really helped me

  • You can skip gears, but it really sucks some gas and is a little harder on the car. I wouldn't skip 4 and 3, normally just 4th is what I do.

  • it jsut shows how fast the engine is spinning, 2000 rpm in second gear is the same as 2000 rpm in 5th gear

  • I've got no idea which retard marked you down, but yes, rpm is rpm, just that second gear provides less transmission power than fifth gear... and stupid people will need explaination on how that works. 1 simple clue... torque. First gear = lalrge perpendicular distance = move a large distance to achieve small angle turn.

Fifth gear = small perpendicular distance = move small distance to achieve large angle turn, but requires a shit lot of energy... would only be efficient if already spinning

  • Are you in a Miata?

  • I'm 14 and I want to drive a Manual car, but now it looks very tough to me...

  • I'm 18, I just had my drivers lisence.

I usualy drive a manual, it's easy when you're used to it.

I had to drive a auto last month, and that was though to me...

If you're used to drive manual, it's realy easy...

    You shift gears without thinking

  • You'll be fine, its just a pain in the ass around town and alot of stops. I suggest learning in automatic to drive, then after your comfortable just driving and breaking, then moved to a manual.

  • i agree with you on the pain in the ass in town etc. but i disagree with the learning thing. learn on a manual and you can drive anything. anyone can drive an auto...

  • In some new car, the automatic transmission is faster and more economical. But, you don't have the manual feeling.

  • Its a good video but he must think we are all stupid. He goes over the position of the pedals!

  • If you have the E-brake on there's no need to hold the brake. On plane surfaces, the car will not move on even if you're not pressing the brake.

  • wow giant feet

  • says the person who more than likely can't drive a manual....keep your mouth shut.

  • Thank you! but not everyone should drive..kids go to sleep and old people must take their medicince and idiots keep your mouth shut and have some respect for the instructor..,,if you dont like watching this and want to learn then go and ride a donkey

  • fuck the seatbelt in Russia nobody uses them and the cops dont give a fuck. Even if they do stop you for a seatbelt you just give them 50 cents and you are free to go.

  • And when you crash at high speeds without the seatbelt you go past the front window.

  • omg i thougt this was a joke, but this is just hilarious... its REAL AHAHAHAH omg

  • IS THAT FORD PROBE.....man nice...xD

  • it a miata

  • english please xD

  • i said its a MAZDA MIATA. not a ford. damn ass

  • danm ass.....?...what ever man....

  • This is videos is gay, HOLEY fuck whut boring voice.

  • You should always teach new manual transmission drivers to press the clutch in when starting the engine. Chances are that they might forget to place it in neutral before they try, so this keeps it from rolling while starting.

  • It's generally a safety rule.

  • 1 if facing uphill and reverse facing downhill or flat makes sense

  • many cars have safety mechanisms that require the clutch to be pressed even if it is in neutral.

  • There are still several cars that need the clutch pressed to start regardless if it is in gear or neutral.

Pressing the brake before shifting into gear is only common sense. Any instructor will tell you that, unless you're a fan of rolling into cars behind you. Which you may be.

  • Good video, i learned lots but your voice sounds so boring. Put more life into it.

  • when you park, its better to put the car in reverse, because its the lowest gear and then apply the e break

  • if Im facing uphill, I put into 1st. Flat or downhill I put into reverse. Makes sense to me.

  • Thanks, im taking my first lesson on monday and this REALLY helped. thanks again :)

  • were do u take lessons lol i didn't know there were such places

  • shut the hell up dumb bitch

  • you missed on how to spot the car. o.O

  • it looks like fun to use manual shift but when you are starting a car you need to put you feet on the clutch and brake. just to start a car! holy automatic shift is easier you just put the key in with out pressing the break and then when you are ready to go you press the break and put it in drive and your off. when going downhill you press the button on the shift.

  • i hate german cars where reverse is where first is it gets anoying but msot are preformnce cars and can start in 2nd

  • this is gay man

  • You might want to correct you're parking procedure which says to press the gas and brake rather than clutch and brake. An obvious oversight but they're are some real dumbass's out there.
