Whew!! Sorry for earlier comments. -- Hadn't heard this all the way through when Conover was playing it to introduce Voice of America Jazz Hour in the Fifties. OK! OK! This is the definitive Take the A Train. Paul's break out in 2nd half of his solo is magic music!!!!
im a hip hop guy but since I was a kid I have listened to everything, I found this recording in my early twenties and can say this JAMS. Im almost forty now and have heard countless covers of this song. NO OTHER VERSION OF THIS SONG JAMS LIKE THIS!!!!!!. When Betty "shoop dooby wah's" i sill close my eyes and get goose bumps!

Thank you! Thank you! I had this recording back in 1953. I felt like it was the absolute best arrangement of A Train I had ever heard. It was a part of a huge jazz record collection of mine. Got up against it, and hocked my records. Years went by and every time I would go to a traditional jazz concert I would approach the CD and Tape sales people to see if they could tell me who the singer was on this recording? No such luck. Finally thanks to you I have found it again. Thanks a million.
I first heard this when I was 13. I'm now 63. For 50 years this has been one of my top ten jazz recordings. Just perfect and wonderful No one better than Betty Roche and Paul Gonsalves. I still hear new little jewels when I listen to this.
Great indeed to listen to this superb Strayhorn arrangement ( again !!) And as Getzwho says down-and i agree with Jazzy Blues woman it's the best version of 'A' ever.Again thanks for itBH
This is my favorite version of "Take the A Train." Betty Roche isn't the household name that Fitzgerald and Vaughan were, but she does an amazing job on this one. Her improv is great
The latter section of this great arrangement is typical Duke. Driving on and on to the end of this really memorable great arrangement by Billy Strayhorn. The whole band is fantastic and as aforesaid betty Roche sings this in grand style Thanks BH2 for the posting. Superb.
Thanks for putting this on. Believe me it's one of my very favourite jazz vocals.. Dukes intro is light and beautiful and Betty Roche does a vocal job on this which is better than any other vocal version of ' A Train ' I've heard
You wouldn't believe how long I had this 45, and it's also one my favorites. While Betty does set the pace, additional credit,in my opinion, can be shared with the Duke; the drum beats of Louie Bellson; and that wild tenor sax of Paul Gonsalvis (sp.).
Damn i was just bout to upload this!!! This really is the best recording of it.
