yes, more or less that was it, i mean, other experiments later on became a bit more complex, with a pulley system to open the gate, etc... this first one was a "proof of concept" thing, and a pretty standard way to attempt to reproduce tsunami waves (by using solitary waves)

well... one of the largest recent ones was in Alaska.... in 1958... that does not mean that they are necessarily the largest.... meteorites, volcanic eruptions, etc can also trigger large tsunamis.... even earthquake tsunamis can be quite large, take the Banda Aceh tsunami in 2004 for example, with heights of over 20m in some locations....

Great experiment! Is it true that the largest tsunami are triggered by landslides (mega tsunami)?

@wikiwuki The largest one was triggered by a landslide in alaska in 1958. It was over 500 meters (1640 feet) high!

sorry, ok, it doesn't travel as a soliton but as a solitary wave, but it has "soliton" like features when it hits the breakwater, this can be seen in the Tsunami Experiment II video (see in Related Videos)

it was a tsunami experiment i carried out as part of my phd thesis.... I put it online so that some friends could get an image of what it is that i do to justify my existence (and their tax money)
