  • It is disgusting to see the University destoying beautiful wildlife habitat up there. But they are trying to make room for students in a State where the population until recently was growing by over 1000 people a day. If these students really want to save trees they should work to give everyone on Earth free and easy access to birth control.

  • Go police - get their asses! =P

  • These cops are amateurs. Fire indescribably in the crowd with blanks and they will disperse.

Maybe we should take lessons of real police brutality, say Myanmar, the Sudan, Algeria, China, Russia, North Korea. Every time a couple of young leftists show up to protest, half always wear masks, bandannas, at 4:00 the guy looked like an Iraqi insurgent, they push a cop and antagonize them and surprise, the cops take action. If these freaks weren't violent, maybe cops wouldn't have to babysit them.

  • 'The police, your friend and helper???'

Yes, but only for the decadent politicians..

  • Haahaaaaa, I love seeing UCSC students beat! Makes my day!!! Should happen more often. Wish it did!! I love Santa Cruz Police!!!!

  • fucking loved it! now we got the taser!!

  • wow, what an ugly scene at ucsc..those cops had to take it 'there' huh? at his peace loving hippie campus ( hey hey hey, Porter, BA in Film and Digital Media 2001)...that's what college students DO, protest crap they aren't feeling in society from a 'thoughful, young and mostly unjaded viewpoint'. thank you for this. 'good to know uc students still care'. and that cops can be retarded!.

  • more than a few times cops have gotten me on a dark street and intimidated and threatened me just for fun...cops abuse their powers every day...too many of them are sadists...

  • Taser them next time.

  • Thumbs up to the cop, thumbs down to retarded protestors

  • I was there that day, It was beautiful. Seeing a punch of pussy hippie protesters get pepper-sprayed. And the really funny thing was, only about 1/4-1/2 of the protesters were actually students, the rest were burnt out hobo hippies. I think this was when they were protesting the expansion of the school in 07, how dumb is that? They don't want other people to get an education but themselves, hella selfish....I mean liberal.

  • If you hit a cop, you get hit back.

  • And if you don't hit a cop, you still get hit! I say go ahead and punch them, they're gonna hit you any way.

  • What world do you live in that cops go around beating people? Only time I saw a cop hit someone was when the guy swung at him.

  • Fuck you, pig! Just look up police brutality on this site. Cops are pussies!

  • I go to this school. ALl these stupid ass students are fucking hippies. Stupid shit environmental studies crap. They already cut down all those stupid trees too. Wow all that stupid shit from these dirty smelly students for nothing. We've been cutting up trees all the time. all these motherfuckers use paper all the time too.

  • damn, FUCK THE POLICE, what happened to the freedom of peaceful assembly, I did like the dyke cops haircut thogh

  • I went to this school and when I saw this I just felt like the cops were doing their jobs. They weren't maliciously beating anyone or spraying them with acid. Nobody died. There's a protest every other month at UCSC, so this is nothing new or shocking.

  • dam people can you at least use a quality camera...sheesh.

  • Why are my tax dollars going to support these idiot "students" at this college?

  • We aren't all like the idiots in this video. I am a UCSC student, and I think that these faux-hippie protesters are just as ridiculous as you do. It's a trend here. Pitiful.

  • As an incoming freshman who didn't have much choice in the matter of picking universities, that is very comforting to hear.

  • Clubbing Slugs is an honor!

If they opened slug clubbing to the public, there would be a line ten miles long

  • The more honest description would be: "The UC Santa Cruz police pepper-spraying and clubbing demonstrators who were pushing the police up against a tree and assaulting the officers." This is the SECOND protest in UCSC history that the police have had to use pepperspray on students. All the rest were peaceful. Oh, and to FCKITUP, call the Ghostbusters next time someone is breaking into your house or mugging you in the streets.

  • I've never seen a cop doing anything that looked like it would prevent or help someone being mugged or burgling... pretty much only see them protecting corporate institutions from citizens or hassling citizens in public places.

I am more afraid of being mugged/detained and hurt by a cop than by a citizen.

  • Then you RustyRedCaps, my friend, have your fears mixed up. Go and talk to a couple of the officers and see how human, nonviolent, and just plain nice they are. When outnumbered and targeted by a hostile crowd, the police act more professionally than any citizen would in that situation. But overall, no hostility = all good for everyone. Wouldn't you agree?

  • Cops I've talked to seem to take on the "I'm going to be an asshole to you and let you know that your problems/concerns are unimportant to me" attitude. From what I've seem of cops they are not nonviolent, human or nice as you put it. Let me explain: they seem to be itching to use violent force in situations that don't require it, they speak to each other in code language and wear dark shades as if to conceal their humanity, and are rude and dismissive if approached for any kind of help.

  • They speak to each other in code language and wear dark shades to protect themselves. They wouldn't want a person to know that they have a warrant for them without backup arriving first. And as far as the sunglasses, who DOESN'T wear them? This specifically is for their own safety so that you can see exactly what they're looking at. And what cops have you talked to, seriously? If it was at the tree-sitting, there were 5 agencies called up there, and bad vibes all around.

  • You're probably right, police only have our security and freedom in mind. Thank you for your well thought out reassurances.

  • Furthermore, how is taking a stance like "Your friends are in these trees and we've already confiscated most of their supplies, if you come close enough to send them provisions we will beat the shit out of you" professional? Isn't kind of like creating a situation where violence is inevitable? if so isn't that more childish than professional?

  • Furthermore, it was NOT the cops decision to stop you from getting to the trees. It was the University Admin. Normally the police chief calls the shots, but at a university, where the students' well-being is at stake, you can thank the Admin for that call. Same thing happened with Tent-U. The admin waited and waited to make the stupid call, and then the cops have to deal with the circumstances at its very worst. Stop by the UCSC PD and ask to speak with one of the officers. They're human.

  • fucking pigs. support your local cop killers.

  • That's real mature. Why don't you grow up. Go move somewhere where police brutality is actually does happen. How many times have you seen an un-provoked police officer beat someone. And yes, shouting "FUCK THE PIGS" actually does count as a provocation.

    Dumbass.

  • Did it have audio once?

  • what program can i use to compress the mpg without losing the sound on a MAC? (iMovie don't support sound for my cameras video type...)

  • This video is missing the sound of the trash orchestra playing in the back...

  • mmcgrego is right: the protestors are a bunch of douche bags. I don't particularly care about the ideas behind the protests any more than I do when I see a white pride parade. All I see is a group of pinheads. I love my alma mater despite the navel gazing, self absorbed hippies who protest just about everything from the important to the insignificant. JO, Stevenson '94

  • as a former student (class of 2006) I do know that many UCSC protests are quasi-informed excuses to enjoy a sunny day in the redwoods instead of indoors, but the LRDP is fucking bullshit. If you aren't a UCSC or Santa Cruz community member, you probably have no idea what this is about. If you aren't from California, your opinion is not important on this matter. You wouldn't understand.

  • Chop down the tree. Chop down more trees, and build the bio-medical research laboratory. Those kids got what was coming to them.

  • were you there? Have you seen the photos and videos captured by the news?

  • I am a Merrill Student, this was blocking my way to the Physical Science Building. Like I said "Chop Down The Tree" with the Hippie in it for all I care. Talk about unoriginal.

Did the cop beat the snot out of you too? Everyone got what was coming to them. Boo hoo! Hippie scum gets a beat down, score one for the boys in blue.

  • This isn't just about the trees, please do some research. It's about the impact expansion would have on the town, it's pretty bad as it is. It would also turn the school into a business rather than an educational institution by increasing inequality within it. While science and engineering programs get all the funding programs such as language studies are about to disappear.

  • You should also do some research. The university has the right to build on campus as long as they don't build above the tree lines. Also not building this facility won't stop more people from coming to Santa Cruz. Want people to stop coming then stop having kids. Also the school divvies up the funds to facilities that get FUNDING. If you want a better humanities department then get a degree and then you and improve it

  • Sure, they have the right... but who are the people writing these laws?

Are you aware that the city voted against it?

  • If the University was really concerned about the safety of that "heavily traveled pedestrian area" (as stated in Chancellor George Blumenthal's administrative message to the school) then they would have called in the ambulance for the safety of the students in the trees! regardless of their qualms with any of the protesters.

  • ALSO if you are trying to get people on your side, don't pull fire alarms and disrupt peoples learning. You want an educational facility; well stop interrupting people's education.

  • The fire alarm issue was brought up, organizers did not condone these types of actions. I'll make sure to bring it up next time I stop by.

  • What were you learning that was more important than standing up for your rights?

  • please..

  • Right on brother.

  • i sorry that you're so confused...but we will NEVER stop...i truly hope that someday you will experience love!

  • Thanks for the positive attitude, hopefully people will at least start to do some research on the issue on their own.

  • Cops just need to be fired, and we need to hire private security for everything. This is getting out of fucking control. I HATE EVERY SINGLE COP ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET! THEY ARE ALL POWER HUNGRY CUNTS!

  • Hmmmm.. you obviously know two things: Jack and Shit, and Jack left town.

Private security? I know a great firm. They're called Blackwater. Ever heard of them? Public law enforcement operates under strict operating procedures and scrutiny. Private firms? Nope. They do whatever they want to get the job done, including killing your stupid hippy ass.

  • Lighten up Francis!

  • i did nto egg the officers on. i asked if i could take a backpack and attch it to the line for the tree-sitters. i even asked if they could do it. it wasnt until they started getting hostile to me that i attempted to move past them. i did not push or shove and i was received with a nightstick to the head.

if taking tht blow is necessary to raise awareness, and stop the lrdp than that is a sacrifice i am willing to make. you must all realize that this cause is bigger than the individual.

  • Well, you certainly raised my awareness of how quickly Mace can make a grown man cry and how adept the SCPD is at bringing down unshowered hippies. Mission accomplished!

  • "make a grown man cry" I've seen plenty cry without pepper spray, what's wrong with that? Well I guess it's wrong if you think crying takes away your masculinity.

"unshowered hippies" My housemates and I were there. We all showered that day so I have no idea of what you are talking about. Maybe you weren't there?

  • Several of these "protestors" aren't even UCSC students. They are just coming here looking for a fight, egging on the UCSC students and antagonizing the police. The students sitting up in the trees are wearing facemasks. If I protest, I'm man enough to show my face. Civil disobedience involves accepting the repricussions for your behavior. Real protestors don't hide their faces. Throwing stuff at the cops counts as violence, therefore this is NOT a nonviolent protest.

  • and when you say you are "man enough" you mean that you're dick is big and there is not enough blood flow for both your brain and your dick right?

I am not sure there are guidelines for what counts as a "real protestor". Each person has a way of confronting the state, and I am not sure "being a real man" counts as that.

  • They are not only covering their faces, they do that in case they get pepper sprayed too.

  • protestors who were interviewed weeks after this demonstration appeared wearing bandannas over their faces for City On A Hill Press, a local free newspaper in Santa Cruz. Nothing screams self important douche bag more than wearing a bandanna or gask mask when it's not appropriate. Stop focuing so much on the image of protesting and you might get better results.

  • Stop focusing so much on the image of protesting and you might have a better argument.

  • The image of protesting IS my argument what the fuck are you talking about.

  • I made that comment based on this comment and others you have left in response to the videos I posted.

Your overall critique would be more productive if you analyzed the ideas behind the protest. It seems like you are stuck on surface arguments, or perhaps you like to argue just for the sake of arguing and attention. Who is the self important douche bag now?

  • I'll let our comments speak for themselves

  • The image of protesting IS the argument, what the fuck are you talking about. I'm sure you thought that was pretty clever though.

  • Don't try to cross the cop wall and you won't get maced.

    Easy as 1+1

  • I went to that damn school long enough to know that pretty much any and all police responses against the student are warranted. Get over yourselves, and quit it with the self-promoting, self-obsession. What a pathetic, weak, insecure generation of people we are.

  • I do disagree with some of the protests, I see your point. I just happen to agree with this one, I think this is one of the most valid protests on campus in a long time.

  • you are a cold-hearted human. we were being peaceful and the police caused/used violence. I took a nightstick to the head, you will never understand what it means to make a change until you make the ultimate sacrifice

  • The ultimate sacrifice is giving up your life so don't even compare what they "suffered" to the ultimate sacrifice.

Were the police not just trying to get the students to stop taking down the barricade?

I love how UCSC kids glorify their protests. Everyone jump on the protest bandwagon. Yeah man freedom fighters man.

  • No, you didn't. You egged the officers on and they did what they had to. You can't just brutalize police officers and expect nothing to happen. There are peaceful ways to protest, but this isn't one of them.

P.S. I hope your nightstick wound feels better soon. (Seriously.)

  • Ultimate sacrifice? You took a nightstick to the head.. so what.. suddenly your a martyr.. join the military, die for your country, die for your cause. Those who make the ultimate sacrifice, don't end up talking about it. Because they are dead.

  • When did all this start?
