I can truly relate to this poem, being myself, Irish, and a product of the Orange and the Green. I find it interesting that Yeates was raised a Protestant, and he too always felt at odds. He as well, believed in God and the Soul. Troubles indeed, very troubling?
Interestingly, the date of the Easter Rising can be seen in the structure of the poem also: there are 16 lines (for 1916) in the first and third stanzas, 24 lines (for April 24, the date the Rising began) in the second and fourth stanzas, and four stanzas in total (which refers to April, the fourth month of the year). from wikipedia.
i managed to sneak in part of this poem into my history coursework, using it as a source :) He manages to capture the moment in history brilliantly, and, i must say, your reading is beautiful, sends chills down my spine
The "lack of emotion" you speak is a perfect technique to make shine in all light the beauty of the verse. Like a ruby will shine more above a grey clothe. The tragic and the greatness of Yeats words flourish in all his beauty with the solution of SpokenVerse.
Congratulations, not only this poem but many others read by you are very well read.
@Codarsnacht McBride never molested anyone. Yeats couldn't figure out why she was attracted to the gruff Irishman rather than an egghead like himself.

@ beggo321
He hated MacBride because he married Muad Gonne, the love of his life.
McBride also molested Gonne's 11 year old daughter and there were other allegations of domestic abuse, that was why she left him.
