i was considering just dropping a 1500 engine from a spitfire in to the herald, but would the MK4 spitfire head fit straight onto the 1300 engine? i know they are basically the same engine so it should fit, i was going to buy some webber or delorto carbs but if the spitfire ones fit i'll use those, thanks for all of your help mate, mikey
thats a bloody quick herald mate! ive just bought one for my first car, its a 1300 but its a bit gutless at the moment, just wondering how yours performs after the cam and a bit of tweaking, please get back to me, mikey
The cam probably made the biggest difference- the standard one is very tame. I put a Kent TH5 in its place, which doesn't pull at all below 1800 rpm, but once you get past that, it pulls much harder all the way to & past the redline. Before you fit one though, you'l want twin 1.5" SU's off a spitfire 1500 & a tubular exhaust manifold mated to a sports system.
Try and find a Mk4 spitfire cylinder head & have it skimmed to raise the compression ratio slightly too (cheap to do) These heads have bigger valves than a Herald
Mine was last rolling roaded at 95bhp @ the flywheel, but its got a ported head. With twin carbs a decent exhaust & slightly higher compression ratio on a healthy engine you can easily see 75bhp without a cam change. Do a compression check on your engine first though, as theres no point in tuning a tired engine-been there done that!
1300... thats the most commonly asked question by TR drivers when they come into the pits, haha! I ported the head and treated it to a hot cam, the rest of the internals are standard.
That's definitely a Vitesse or else a Herald with Vitesse body work. Not a standard Herald.

@zapwatt Its definitely a Herald 13/60 made late 1967 onwards...
