Hi there, I must say great idea and great vid thanks heaps. You might try basting the vegies and meat in its juices at intervals. I am going to try this :)
Hey nice experiment . Have you tried a dutch oven , no worries of breaking glass! also holds heat better. They make sun trackers for solar cells, look on youtube for lots of designs. with a sun tracker and a dutch oven it might be set and forget till dinner.
Hey fencekid, I'm TOTALLY IMPRESSED, thumbs up and thankin' ya for sharin' your valuable knowledge, technology need not be complicated to be successful, you're totally an INSPIRATION to the rest of us for gittin' off our buns and DOIN' stuff! = )
Please get a electronic temp probe they work well you can set it to alert when the center temp is 160 or something else differnt foods require dirrernt temps this will fascilitate less checking and you will cook constantly making full use of the sunlight. The probe I had was unger $8 wally used one AAA battery I used it to cook tv dinners in a burton oven when I was trucking. Pretty accurate too you can check by setting in a glass ice water it should read 33/32 after a min.
I don't see anywhere that he used the term DI, but if so, he probably meant DIY, which using common sense, would mean do it yourself. In this video, he obviously assumed everyone would know what a fresnel lens does and could figure this stuff out, but there are millions of people who can't think for themselves and never even think to use Google on that computer that's right in front of them.
"What I got is one glass bowl on the bottom, DI Special 50 center. Same with the top, But the bottom one i just painted black."
So he could have been talking about a store also. With common sense I would think think he would know how to say DIY. Anyways take your head out your ass, you stuck up fucker. Really why would you assume that everyone one knows what a Fresnel lens would be? Is everyone here old light house workers? So how about not being a asshole.
Overhead projectors used a fresnel lens. Old big screen TVs used a fresnel lens. RVs use a fresnel lens on their back windows. Lighthouses do NOT use fresnel lenses. Wow, I managed to say all that without one curse word! Too bad people like TheHampdenRaven can't do the same.
it's not a screen. it's a sheet of plastic with tiny circular lines carved into one side of it. it's a big screen tv lens. You can see the television it came out of in my hot dog video, at 1:16. works just like a big magnifying glass that you used to burn ants with. but be very careful around it in the sun like when carrying or moving it. it can destroy flesh instantly, start your cloths on fire, or anything on fire for that matter.
fencekid isn't exaggerating. NEVER LEAVE THEM OUTSIDE. Lean one against something in the shade & think you're safe? If the sun crosses its path again tomorrow it can ignite combustibles instantly. They can melt steel!
I'm experimenting with solar cookers & fresnels & parabolics also & searched for a good recipe for a pork roast which is how I ended up here. Last week was ribs with Stubbs Rub & Mopping sauce. Damn they were good. Think I'll try some apples & raisins in mine. Nice video man. 8^)
You can put some small or sliced potatoes, carrots and some corn on the cob, maybe,I think you could put them on the bottom of the pan or wrap the potatoes in foil with some water in them. start cooking early in the morning if possible. Not sure about the veggies ,just do your own expieraments ,its good to know learn these survivalist things before some disaster strikes.
@celticcrossarts you don't really need global warming to cook with a solar oven. just a clear day :) I've seen many people cook on days where there's snow.
Grr-eat Video. Have you ever experimented with using a pressure cooker with your solar cooker to even decrease the cooking times even more?? Now that would be interesting!
The roast was delicious. The texture was just like a roast cooked in your oven in a roasting pan at 325 degrees 3 hrs. I keep watch as it's cooking and rotate as necessary to avoid over surface scorching, As the sun tracks the sky, so does your focal point, so keep watch. Place your oven in front of the focal point so the beam is wide enough to cover your oven. The closer to the focal point, the hotter the temp. keep your oven in front, probably 10" or 12" to start off, then adjust as needed.
The lens is a big screen projection tv lens. Check your local newspaper for people giving away big screen tv that no longer works. Go pick up the tv, take out the lens and mirror and discard of the rest. A new lens costs about $80 - $120, but you can get a sweet lens for free if you have access to an old big screen. Check out my hot dog video at 1:16 you can see the tv I took the lens out of. Note - not "wide screen" but "big screen".
Your solar cooking vids were the best. Purly insperational. I have two large fresnail lenses and two 36" perabolic mirrrows. I am going to build an ALL solar kitchen for my wife. Afet watching your vids. She is real excited.
Large tv screen Fresnel lens are designed for TV's. Now just image when they are designed for heating purposes. Application of polymers, micro mirroring, and special surface coatings, these things could boost the power of these lens from 1KW to 3 or 4KW of heat on a sunny day. Next, the lenses could be produced in dome shapes to reduce the size of a lens but still produce 4 or even 5KW of heat. Ah... the future.
I have a spot fresnel lens like this one here and have solar cooked using it from the top into a pot covered with an oven bag made veggies and from the bottom I cooked by using a mirror with a wide focus spot like this then hitting the bottome of a cast iron small 5 inch pan. It works great. I have a video of it made that stubbornly doesnt' upload and its within size, but my solar oven video is on my profile that I made nice cooking there nice video guy.
The beauty of the lens is that you can also fry with it. The downside is the bulky size and potential damage to eyes, I think. I have a large assortment of black cooking pots I've picked up at garage sales and Goodwill. The Global Sun oven comes with a 3 qt. graniteware cooker that I use a lot. With that, you can put whatever color dish you want inside..like clear Pyrex. If I had only one black dish, it would be the 3 qt. graniteware covered pot. Great solar cooking day today in my area of Texas
The tighter the focal point the more it will strain your eyes is what I experienced. Also a dark surface doesn't reflect as much light back at you. So far so good for me I used to wear brazing goggles with a num 7 lens in it very dark when at focal point on wood etc but partial focus I use my polarized sunglasses so far so good.
I don't think a black pot makes much difference with the lens. That's for converting sunlight into heat, but the lens does the converting. The added benefit of the black pot would only be equal to what setting a black pot out in the sun would add. Now if you added reflectors on 3 sides, that would increase the temp considerably. I don't think you need any higher temp though. This works well by itself. Nice video.

How many times did you have to reposition the fresnel lens to keep the heat focused on the cooker?
7188181 2 years ago 3
Little here, little there. Definitely not a "set it and forget it" way of cooking due to the moving sun.
fencekid 2 years ago
I'm curious why you can't pronounce "fresnel" correctly? It's a very easy word to say. You said "fer-nel". Speech impediment?

what is a DI special. We do a lot of solar cooking and could use some cheap bowls.

Thank you for your clear videos.
One (honest) question:
Normally the food is being heated up from the bottom of the pan.
You heat it up the other way around, is there a difference in taste?
As the focal point of the lens is extremely hot, I fear the food gets burnt easily or loses its taste.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Thank you for the information.
I am trying to get hold of a Fresnel lens and set up a similar stove.
I made a start with a solar oven with the use of a small box, tin foil and some extra mirrors.
I managed to heat up my coffee to a temperature of 85 degrees Celcius (185 F)approximately.
The design has to be improved by using wood and glass instead of simple wrapping plastic on top.
I hope to be able to cook water with the next design, I'll keep you informed.
