Evidently John loved this movie so much that when Eric Idle ran it by him and let him watch he refused to give it back and watched it several times in succession.
Maybe someday they'll do another "mockumentary and give The Stones the treatment. The group could be "The Gathering Moss". With such "hits" as: "Let's Shag Your Wife Together" "As Beers Go Bye Bye" "(I Can't Vet No) Sadist Faction" "Deep Knee Squat Flash" "Wild Divorces" "Under My Bum" "Can't You See Me Buzzing?" "Let It Scab" "Time Ain't On My Side" "Sympathy For the Lawyer" and my personal favorite- "You Can't Always Get Rid of What You Don't Want" (It's not "Hippy Rock", it's "Herpie Rock"!
Like in Python, Eric loved to do parodies of on-the-spot reporters! I too wondered how the reporter kept pace with the camera mount on the moving vehicles covering them. It was both funny and a little sad when the reporter got run over in the end.
That's funny. I thought that the earlier comments indicated that people reading and responding to them have already seen "All You Need Is Cash!" My apologies to the two or three people in the world who have never heard of The Rutles for ruining The Surprise Ending of This Hilarious Film!
I only found out about them a few months ago! Which is weird, because I've been a Python fan for years and years, and even heard an interview Eric Idle about the Rutles... but never bothered to find it! Thankfully I've bought the DVD now, so it's all good. :D
What a great parody. Right up there with "Spinal Tap". I like to play a Rutles song for the uninformed and listen to them say, "That song sounds so familiar, but I can't remember the name". They think it's the Beatles but they can't figure out what they're listening to.
theres a great Beatles tribute band around here called The Caverners.. that sound just about dead on.. but in the Let It Be era their John Lennon looks as much like Ron Nasty as he does John Lennon *lol*
Ya se que a los puritanos de los beatles no les gusta mucho...pero la verdad es mas fregon y mas profundo que A Hard Day's night Los Rutles son la ley larga vida a los Rutles°!!
Neil Innes was a friend of John's from his Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band days in the 60's. He sent John a videocassette copy before the broadcast and John refused to give it back - he loved it! His favorite part was Nasty and the German girl in the shower "for peace".
There first album was made 20mins the second took even longer .i know this film of by heart.like the back of my hand and i know that well too.Linda mccartney was flatterd when mick jaggers wife played her in this.
okay found out john loved it, and ringo did too but the sadder parts for ringo was too close, but he loved it
they said that get up and go was so close to get back, they were worried they would be sued by paul, but he didnot sue there was no comment for him, but yes yes john loved it
Here's something important: Neil Innes not only plays John Lennon - he wrote the lyrics and all the music - an amazing blend and a parody of lots of Beatles songs
If you look Eric Idle (Dirk McQuickly) is only tapping his guitar. Neil Innes (Ron Nasty) played his instrument and, I beleive, wrote the lyrics. Riki Faatar (Stig O'Hara) was a proper musician. I dont know whether or no John Halsey (Barry Wom) could play or not.
sorry for the typo. my other favourite rutles song is 'love life'. love is the meaning of life, life is the meaning of love. what the fuck were their names though?
"In December 1970 Dirk sued Stig and Nasty, Barry sued Dirk, Nasty sued Stig and Barry, and Stig sued himself accidentally. It was the end of a golden era, and the beginning of another one for lawyers everywhere."

Beatles music childish? You clearly know not what you speak and need to be educated in the high priesthood of rock! Stop listening to the backstreet boys,,,,
I was just watching the Rutles again earlier tonight, and laughed just as much as always. It's so damn hilarious. Eric Idle is a genius. Neil Innes too. I really love all the cameos in the film too - especially George Harrision interviewing Michael Palin outside the Rutle-corp offices. :)
This was great. In this clip (in the Hard Day's Night-type scene), they even have a guy that looks just like Richard Lester opening the car for them. I know George had a cameo appearance in this. Ringo commented that he liked it. Never heard or read any response from John or Paul.
From what I can remember reading, I think John and Yoko liked it but Paul was offended by it, lol. At the time anyway. No idea what he thinks of it these days!
Thanks for the reply. I wonder why Paul was offended? I thought perhaps John might have been a little irked with some of the humor regarding Yoko. I guess not.
It's the little subtleties that get me on this. Can you honestly imagine John Lennon saying "Je ne sais quois" with a straight face? Or a Fab Four song with lyrics like "I'm not throwing caution to the wind" or "shoot me down in flames if I should tell a lie?"
Do they ever tell us where "Leppo" (the former Fifth Rutle) is today??
Kudos to Eric Idle for putting this together. It started out as a film sketch on SNL but it was such a hit that Lorne Michaels asked him to put together a whole special. Today you can get all the details on the Anthology but in 1977 Idle had to dig them out of the archives, and on a dealine and limited budget.
