@AbbyGMusic They require shallow water so that, while burried in the sand, they can reach the surface if the water with thier head. Maybe my sentence is tricky to understand, but I think you'll get it.
@brianvelasquez lol I really should make a real skate edit since all my videos are just me messing around with new skates but I don't even have a video camera anymore, Ive been totally focused on my photography check out my site
We had bought one the size of a silver dollar in 2003 and eventually gave it to a friend who has a 500 gallon tank, the shell is now about 16-18 inches in diameter!!!
Are you still using that sand? It doesnt look to safe. And the water level may be a little too deep. Scratch that, alot. The water should at least be shallow enough for the turtle to reach its head up without leaving the bottom. Also, many of the items in there could cut their shells and if left untreated can cause infection. Just letting you know. Im an avid turtle keeper, owner of two snapping turtles, a musk turtle, a few RES, and a spiny soft shell.
@justwatchinthevideos well first off you need more then basic beginner turtles like res and snapping to impress me with your expirence lol. Actually for softshelled turtles sand is the safest and most popular substrate because they are diggers and like to bury themselves in the sand so which to you sounds like a better and more natural option gravel which can wear down their shell or soft sand? In the wild they actually live in pretty deep water they just dont stay on the banks,
@kc502roller Actually, I know soft shells need sand because rocks can scratch their shell. Like i said, i have one myself. And i named a few turtles that i keep. I shouldve said that. Also ive seen baby softshells in the wild. Most live near the embankment of rivers where they can get easy access to basking areas and instead of having to swim all the way to the surface and tire themselves out. also, some of the items in your tank setup can scratch your turtles shell.
they are prob. one of the most graceful and strong swimmers in my opinion but the water in my video is actually higher then I keep it, it was just for the video purposes and Ive stated that in my comments, I keep it about half of whats in the video around where the waving crab is and they have a seperate container of sand thats 2 inches below the surface and they prefer the deeper section so that proves you wrong, if they didnt like deep water they'd hang out in the shallow section.
I've been keeping turtles for about 15+ years and have never heard of a softshell drowning because the water was to deep lol. how do you have your softy setup? In a bare tank with 2 inches of water? Not very natural for the poor guy.
@kc502roller i do not have my turtles tank 2 inches deep. My turtles tank is a 50 gallon and i keep his water level at 10 inches. He is a 4 inch spiny and he does perfectly well there. im only just beginning so i dont know that much about turtles. ive acquired mexican giant musks, seibenrock's sideneck and a matamata. I bought two of each. Ive got each in 50 gallon tanks and made their tanks as natural to their habitat as i can. any tips on how i can get any of them to breed with one other
@justwatchinthevideos Im not sure about mating I've never tried mainly because I didnt want to deal with buying a incubator and stuff but Im pretty sure matamatas are nearly impossibly to breed in captivity since you never see babies or captive breed turtles on the market even from breeders its always wild caught ones.
Well I didnt mean the softies dont hang out in shallow water I just meant they do swim to deeper water and like you said they live in rivers which means they have to be strong swimmers because of the currents. Yeah I've always wanted a matamata just havnt gotten around to having one it will prob. be the next species I get if I spot spending my money on camera equiptment lol.
@kc502roller Well i bought mine from this website called The Turtle Source and they have them from juveniles at 3 inches to large at 5 to 6 inch. And i have heard of the big headed turtle. Is it true that they can climb trees to bask along river banks? To me that means that they somehow actually climb the tree trunk. But i may be wrong.
@justwatchinthevideos Thats what I mean the smallest you will usually find a matamata is 4-5 inches, Ive never seen a 3 inch so thats awesome they have it, but they arnt born 3 inches lol most turtles you can find as hatchlings being sold which are around 1 inch or smaller.
Yeah musk turtles are known for climbing too but I think they are talking about the trees that grow over the water at angles, I have heard stories or turtles falling on people while they are boating under trees but find it hard to believe a turtle could climb a vertical tree maybe Im wrong lol
No lol full grown these guys can have a shell 24inch long but it takes years to reach that length, I'd suggest a smaller species or a species from your area, there are several species of softshelled turtles and most likly one of those live in your area that way you can release them after they have worn out their welcome andyou don't hurt the enviroment. In the past year mine have doubled in size so still tiny. A full grown softy would require a massive tank
Mine will only eat live food such as crabs, ghost shrimp and crickets I've heard the same thing from some other people so they they are more expensive to care for then other species like a red ear slider or musk turtles ect.. which eat pellets. They also require sand on the bottom for digging. You can find tons of caresheets I'd suggest finding a few of them and average them out because sometimes information can vary depending on the source but you average it and it should be good
Well since you want to make a super obvious statement with attitude let me correct you. All turtles with a shell smaller then 4 inches are illegal to sell because they can carry salmanella not that they all carry it. The problem with that law is that for reason they gave it to the FDA and we all know how great they are at doing their job...they don't really send agents to pet stores across the country so there many pet stores who still sell them. It's also legal for labsand teachers to buy them
no they don't there is just the risk, if all turtles carried it then you'd hear about them causing it more often but I've been keeping turtles for 15+ years and have yet caught salmonella or known someone who did and I've forgot to wash my hands several times threw the years.
Can't remember off the top of my head but its a fluval submersable just not sure exactly what model, it's good for 40 gallons and I usually keep 20 or less in the tank, I like to change up the water depth. You typically want to keep twice or more filtration to the amount of water in the tank. also I keep animals who clean the tank for me such as crabs and ghost shrimp which also make great snacks for the little guys. My water is still nearly crystal clear after more then a year
i have had florida soft shell for about 8 years and i just moved them to a new deep water tank just wondering what you feed them i always feed mine floating pellets but now they dont seem to want to eat them.
mine has never ate pellets or sticks they sometimes willlook at them but thats it, they will only eat living food so I keep small crabs, ghost shrimp in the tank and I also give them crickets and worms.
are there any special things you do to the water conditions like ph treatment? what have you done to help prevent shell rot? i have a florida soft shell and im looking for some advice to better her situation
sorry it took so long to awnser, basically make sure you keep some fresh water salt in the water and make sure you have at least double the amount of filtration then you have water so if you have 20 gallons of water have enough filtration running for 40 gallons.
I just bought one here in L.A for $10 and he is goofy but man he goes after guppies like crazy. I have it with cichlids an a couple of Chinese turtles Best turtle to own is a soft shell.
that is a good deal $40 for two mines was $50 plus the over night shipping..I just put a few crickets on one one the basking platforms then I noticed one was in the water dead so ill see if they are gone in the morning
yeah I paid 40 for them but then its like 40-50 for 24 hour shipping kinda sucks, I usualy kill the crickets before throwing them in so they dont climb onto rocks, usualy I just either lightly smash them if Im in a hurry or just pinch their heads
you can see it in the video, it's a floating island with suction cups to anchor it to the wall under the basking light. You should be able to find them at any pet store that carries reptile supplies I'd imagine they are pretty common.
oh I am sorry yah I make sure there are no little places that they can get caught in that sucks but glad your other one is good and has a red ear slider buddy! So in the vidoe on your receipt you got both soft shell for $40
ok ill try the craickets and hope he goes for it cause it would be nice to change up what he eats...so do you still have both of them cause in the video you order 2 of them? and that was a good price that you got them for
no I only have 1 now the other got stuck under water between somthing I hadn't considered a risk and he drowned sadly, but thats been fixed so now he is living with a red ear slider the same size
These guys LOVE spearing which is a bait fish... Here in NY everybody uses them as bait for fishing so its easy to come by... I'm not sure about other parts of the country... I have live guppies in the tank with them but the baby softshells can't seem to catch them...
ill go and get some small crickets today and try that out he still eats the blood worms that I have and small frozzen krill I have'nt seen him eat any of the ghost shrimp all though I did have 8 in there now I only see 2 lol but he also lives with a razor back so he could of ate some as well how big is your soft shell now? thanks again for the suggestions
mine has probably doubled his size maybe a little larger hard to tell cause I see him every day lol, I'd say go with medium size crickets if yours is small cause mine seems to like going after the bigger prey. Who knows about the ghost shrimp a razor back would like too so he could be the one eating them.
lol that is cute looking for treats hope mines does that when he gets used to me...you order yours off line as well? So any suggestions on what else to feed soft shells? like I mentioned he eats blood worms not so much into the stick food I have feeder guppies in the tank as well as some ghost shrimp
yeah mine won't eat pellets or sticks, I usually feed it ghost shrimp and crickets and I also keep crabs in the tank which he likes to eat on occasion and I also throw in the occasional worm and stuff like that. I gut load the crickets to make sure he gets enough vitamins and what not
nice soft shells I just got one today he loves to eat the blood worms when your were that small did they like to bask? This one likes to bask and then jumps in the water...lol...
I mainly feed them a mix of live crickets and the freeze dried crickets that are packed with vitamins and calcium but I also as you can see keep crabs in there which the soft shell loves to eat and they keep th cage clean at the same, I also give them random worms and insects from outside
yeah I try to feed them daily ut I work as a photographer on the weekends and I skate so I travel alot so sometimes they go a couple days wih out me feeding them but like I said i keep random things like crabs in their if they really wanted to eat
I usually keep the water around 8 inches but I have a extra container filled with sand so they have the option of burrowing into sand in deep waer or in shallow so they just have to poke their head out to breath, they usually sleep there and when they are awake they go deep and hide under that sand so it's good to have both also remember soft shells depend on very clean water so you need at least double the filtration to water ratio [;us crabs and things help too i havnt had to clean it once
anytime you ship reptiles it's aroud 40-50 for the shipping because they require overnight shipping and the boxes have to be gig enough or the padding and depeding on time of the year heat packs. Since it's ilegal to sell any turtle under 4 inches its rare a pet store atleast in louisville ky will even touch them
I only had the water that deep for the video, it about half that now plus there is a container with sand to give them a raised plaform to cover themselves on. They are alot more active then most people think they are cause mine only hides when cared or sleeping
thats a little harsh lol I mean they are my ponds and since I love turtles I dont consider them a pest in fact it is always fun to go catch them again lol
I've had them for awhile now and water wasn't the problem cause I use a water heater they just don't like turtle pellets only live food. Mine arn't mean at all but I've noticed alot of baby turtles won't be mean for a while even baby snapping turtles usualy arn't mean. If the crab is a small one they go after it but they won't eat the bigger ones or the guppies
thats what they are sitting on in the water at the beginning, also the water isn't kept that high I just had it higher to film them swimming in case you wondered.
did they actually sent those turtles in that box and for how long did they stay in that box???? lol just wondering because im from tx and water turtles are illegal to sell or buy.
well baby turtles with under a 4 inch shell are illegal to buy or sell in any state unless it's for educational or research but you'll find them occasionaly at pet stores anyway these came from from one in las vegas. You cthe stores online if you look around and then they ship then over night in the boxes it's really safe and you can order nearly any kind threw the mail.
thats freaking sweet lol but its still feels weird receiving them through a box lol. ps do u know if i get some would my other softshell turtle eat them or just accept them as one of its own species, shes and adult arleady?
well its never good to mix turtles of different sizes regardless of the species so it wouldn't be a good idea plus soft shells are better to be left by themselves unless the cage is large enough.
i did some research and crickets alone dont have enough calcium so now im trying to get it adjusted to pellets along with trying other insects. its shell is starting curl slightly which means calcium deficiencies. it wont touch earthworms, i tried that and I also read that mealworms are too low on calcium so im tryin different stuff. i will try the fiddler crabs, thx
yeah I have a panther chameleon so I have to deal with the calcium problem too, I always gut load my insects with some form of calcium which helps plus on top of the crabs plus I always keep a supply of fish like feeder guppies and gouramis (sp) which he'll eat occasionally so he gets a bit of good nutrients from them but for some reason he rarely eats the fish.
yeah i have a bearded dragon. they're easy bc you can just calcium dust and gut load but gut loading alone is still too little calcium and you cant dust for turtles. mine wont touch fish. he's had a couple feeder guppies in there with em for about two months lol so they're his little tank buddies now i think. im weening his diet over to reptomin as a staple but i am still lost as far as a good calcium source. i tried a turtle bone but wont touch it either
pretty sweet setup. what do you feed them? i have a baby eastern spiny softshell and it wont touch anything but crickets (gut loaded) and krill. not sure if crickets are complete enough nutrition, i go through a lot
yeah mine won't touch anything but insects eithers mostly crickets. have you tried other stuff like worms, catapillers, mill worms mine also likes fiddler crabs sometimes which works out because they keep keep the cage clean at the same time lol
i just found one of these guys the other day and I would like to keep him, he's about 2" long. So do you use lake water? what do you feed them? I got him some shrimp from the pet store, and some minos from the lake. Are heat lamps important? do they like to be alone or should I get him a buddy turtle from the pet store?
Can you read because if you can I clearly say that Im aware of the full grown size of them in a previous post from someone else that thought it was important to inform me, I've only been into keeping turtles now for 10 years so I think I have a fair grasp of researching an animal before purchasing it.
The crabs gonna be food for those guys once they get bigger so you might want to remove them since it's so gangster. I would get soft shells but they grow way too big the females grow up to 24".
I'm aware of their full grown size and I made the tank to be pretty self cleaning while providing them more natural food like the crabs they keep the cage clean till it's time for lunch lol they have really bothered them because their to small but it is pretty funny watch the soft shells chase to crabs to steal the crickets they grab
yeah that crab seriously does that all day every day lol I have another crab I wish I would have noticed when making the video buy he has a perfect honda symbol on his back while all the rest just have dark colored shells
0:20 thats one gay mother fucking crap

Eclipse6491 2 years ago
that is a good deal $40 for two mines was $50 plus the over night shipping..I just put a few crickets on one one the basking platforms then I noticed one was in the water dead so ill see if they are gone in the morning
emostars71 2 years ago
hey I got some crickets so quick question do you use tongs to feed you soft shell or do you just drop them in the tank
emostars71 2 years ago
yeah I paid 40 for them but then its like 40-50 for 24 hour shipping kinda sucks, I usualy kill the crickets before throwing them in so they dont climb onto rocks, usualy I just either lightly smash them if Im in a hurry or just pinch their heads
kc502roller 2 years ago
what did u use for the land part of the tank?
JSTER720 2 years ago
you can see it in the video, it's a floating island with suction cups to anchor it to the wall under the basking light. You should be able to find them at any pet store that carries reptile supplies I'd imagine they are pretty common.
kc502roller 2 years ago
oh I am sorry yah I make sure there are no little places that they can get caught in that sucks but glad your other one is good and has a red ear slider buddy! So in the vidoe on your receipt you got both soft shell for $40
emostars71 2 years ago
ok ill try the craickets and hope he goes for it cause it would be nice to change up what he eats...so do you still have both of them cause in the video you order 2 of them? and that was a good price that you got them for
emostars71 2 years ago
no I only have 1 now the other got stuck under water between somthing I hadn't considered a risk and he drowned sadly, but thats been fixed so now he is living with a red ear slider the same size
kc502roller 2 years ago
These guys LOVE spearing which is a bait fish... Here in NY everybody uses them as bait for fishing so its easy to come by... I'm not sure about other parts of the country... I have live guppies in the tank with them but the baby softshells can't seem to catch them...
grngocolombiano 2 years ago
ill go and get some small crickets today and try that out he still eats the blood worms that I have and small frozzen krill I have'nt seen him eat any of the ghost shrimp all though I did have 8 in there now I only see 2 lol but he also lives with a razor back so he could of ate some as well how big is your soft shell now? thanks again for the suggestions
emostars71 2 years ago
mine has probably doubled his size maybe a little larger hard to tell cause I see him every day lol, I'd say go with medium size crickets if yours is small cause mine seems to like going after the bigger prey. Who knows about the ghost shrimp a razor back would like too so he could be the one eating them.
kc502roller 2 years ago
lol that is cute looking for treats hope mines does that when he gets used to me...you order yours off line as well? So any suggestions on what else to feed soft shells? like I mentioned he eats blood worms not so much into the stick food I have feeder guppies in the tank as well as some ghost shrimp
emostars71 2 years ago
yeah mine won't eat pellets or sticks, I usually feed it ghost shrimp and crickets and I also keep crabs in the tank which he likes to eat on occasion and I also throw in the occasional worm and stuff like that. I gut load the crickets to make sure he gets enough vitamins and what not
kc502roller 2 years ago
nice soft shells I just got one today he loves to eat the blood worms when your were that small did they like to bask? This one likes to bask and then jumps in the water...lol...
emostars71 2 years ago
yeah even adults will like to bask just not as frequently. Mine is really personal he comes to me anytime I'm near the tank looking for treats lol

What's the name of this song??
themassakr 2 years ago
what type of food do you usually feed them?
neobenrivera 2 years ago
I mainly feed them a mix of live crickets and the freeze dried crickets that are packed with vitamins and calcium but I also as you can see keep crabs in there which the soft shell loves to eat and they keep th cage clean at the same, I also give them random worms and insects from outside
kc502roller 2 years ago
thanks !!! one more thing... do you feed them daily or not?
neobenrivera 2 years ago
yeah I try to feed them daily ut I work as a photographer on the weekends and I skate so I travel alot so sometimes they go a couple days wih out me feeding them but like I said i keep random things like crabs in their if they really wanted to eat
kc502roller 2 years ago
ooohhhh... last thing, is it ok if the water inside the tank is deep? tnx alot !!!
neobenrivera 2 years ago
I usually keep the water around 8 inches but I have a extra container filled with sand so they have the option of burrowing into sand in deep waer or in shallow so they just have to poke their head out to breath, they usually sleep there and when they are awake they go deep and hide under that sand so it's good to have both also remember soft shells depend on very clean water so you need at least double the filtration to water ratio [;us crabs and things help too i havnt had to clean it once
kc502roller 2 years ago
those are cool I have a spiny softshell
harminoff1 2 years ago
Where do you live that you had to pay 96 dollars for 2 FSS's?!?!?
DanielDumile 2 years ago
anytime you ship reptiles it's aroud 40-50 for the shipping because they require overnight shipping and the boxes have to be gig enough or the padding and depeding on time of the year heat packs. Since it's ilegal to sell any turtle under 4 inches its rare a pet store atleast in louisville ky will even touch them
kc502roller 2 years ago
nice.
i have 2 aswell
can u tell me what are u feeding them on
and at what temperature u keep the water??

great set up for a Softy...
my only thought was maybe the water might be a bit deep?
they seem pretty outgoing for softies though
BufFan71 2 years ago
I only had the water that deep for the video, it about half that now plus there is a container with sand to give them a raised plaform to cover themselves on. They are alot more active then most people think they are cause mine only hides when cared or sleeping
kc502roller 2 years ago
well i used to have a softy, but had to get rid of it...
now i just have my 5 yr old RES
BufFan71 2 years ago
yeah I have a res too she's about 1 old but Im debatin on releasing her at my country home this summer theres a few ponds full of res
kc502roller 2 years ago
i wouldnt release a RES, they are like the rats of the turtle world...
now if you'd like to get rid of one of yur softies.. id happily take one
BufFan71 2 years ago
thats a little harsh lol I mean they are my ponds and since I love turtles I dont consider them a pest in fact it is always fun to go catch them again lol

octavian300 3 years ago
if your guy is new and does not eat make sure the water is warm or he will never eat.
i thought softshell were pretty mean turtles. my stinkpot would never get along with that crab.
malitano 3 years ago
I've had them for awhile now and water wasn't the problem cause I use a water heater they just don't like turtle pellets only live food. Mine arn't mean at all but I've noticed alot of baby turtles won't be mean for a while even baby snapping turtles usualy arn't mean. If the crab is a small one they go after it but they won't eat the bigger ones or the guppies
kc502roller 3 years ago
i just got mine 3 days ago and their not eating what should i do
amyers123456789 3 years ago
mine did the same thing try feeding them live crickets and worms that worked for mine, actualy they still won't eat anything but live insects
kc502roller 3 years ago
you should get a basking dock for them
amyers123456789 3 years ago
thats what they are sitting on in the water at the beginning, also the water isn't kept that high I just had it higher to film them swimming in case you wondered.
kc502roller 3 years ago
did they actually sent those turtles in that box and for how long did they stay in that box???? lol just wondering because im from tx and water turtles are illegal to sell or buy.
elbigmo06 3 years ago
well baby turtles with under a 4 inch shell are illegal to buy or sell in any state unless it's for educational or research but you'll find them occasionaly at pet stores anyway these came from from one in las vegas. You cthe stores online if you look around and then they ship then over night in the boxes it's really safe and you can order nearly any kind threw the mail.
kc502roller 3 years ago
thats freaking sweet lol but its still feels weird receiving them through a box lol. ps do u know if i get some would my other softshell turtle eat them or just accept them as one of its own species, shes and adult arleady?
elbigmo06 3 years ago
well its never good to mix turtles of different sizes regardless of the species so it wouldn't be a good idea plus soft shells are better to be left by themselves unless the cage is large enough.
kc502roller 3 years ago
i did some research and crickets alone dont have enough calcium so now im trying to get it adjusted to pellets along with trying other insects. its shell is starting curl slightly which means calcium deficiencies. it wont touch earthworms, i tried that and I also read that mealworms are too low on calcium so im tryin different stuff. i will try the fiddler crabs, thx
eyestothenightsky 3 years ago
yeah I have a panther chameleon so I have to deal with the calcium problem too, I always gut load my insects with some form of calcium which helps plus on top of the crabs plus I always keep a supply of fish like feeder guppies and gouramis (sp) which he'll eat occasionally so he gets a bit of good nutrients from them but for some reason he rarely eats the fish.
kc502roller 3 years ago
yeah i have a bearded dragon. they're easy bc you can just calcium dust and gut load but gut loading alone is still too little calcium and you cant dust for turtles. mine wont touch fish. he's had a couple feeder guppies in there with em for about two months lol so they're his little tank buddies now i think. im weening his diet over to reptomin as a staple but i am still lost as far as a good calcium source. i tried a turtle bone but wont touch it either
eyestothenightsky 3 years ago
pretty sweet setup. what do you feed them? i have a baby eastern spiny softshell and it wont touch anything but crickets (gut loaded) and krill. not sure if crickets are complete enough nutrition, i go through a lot
eyestothenightsky 3 years ago
yeah mine won't touch anything but insects eithers mostly crickets. have you tried other stuff like worms, catapillers, mill worms mine also likes fiddler crabs sometimes which works out because they keep keep the cage clean at the same time lol

i just found one of these guys the other day and I would like to keep him, he's about 2" long. So do you use lake water? what do you feed them? I got him some shrimp from the pet store, and some minos from the lake. Are heat lamps important? do they like to be alone or should I get him a buddy turtle from the pet store?
stchase24 3 years ago
you know those turtles grow to be 24 inches right??
litledevel15 3 years ago
Can you read because if you can I clearly say that Im aware of the full grown size of them in a previous post from someone else that thought it was important to inform me, I've only been into keeping turtles now for 10 years so I think I have a fair grasp of researching an animal before purchasing it.

The crabs gonna be food for those guys once they get bigger so you might want to remove them since it's so gangster. I would get soft shells but they grow way too big the females grow up to 24".
holidaypunch 3 years ago
I'm aware of their full grown size and I made the tank to be pretty self cleaning while providing them more natural food like the crabs they keep the cage clean till it's time for lunch lol they have really bothered them because their to small but it is pretty funny watch the soft shells chase to crabs to steal the crickets they grab
