Suburbia is not doomed it can be somewhat sustained with a light rail system that can easily be installed ontop the blacktop. I liked it when I lived in the city of LA but the gangs there make it impossible to raise children so folks are going to take it to the streets that is the entire reason for the exodus from the cities people have offspring. Sadly if you don't spend the required time with them the offspring start suburban gangs.
I know everyone likes to bag suburbia but has anyone thought about WHY the phenomenon occured?
Living in compact cities drives up land values making home ownership near impossible for the vast majority of the people. Can you imagine not even remotly having a chance of owning property? Even if you were in an above average income job... You would spend your life paying rent.. the development of the car overcame this problem and it is now possible for everyone to own a home.

I always wondered why people are driving 100km each day to their offices, when most of them could do home-work. The suburb-concept is not existing where I live. I've got 6 grocery stores, 3 underground stations, 4 bus lines, 5 restaurants and a couple of tramway stations within a distance of two minutes walking. To me that is what I'm expecting when I live in a city. Even company buildings are closely located to mass transportation because that makes the wages for the workers actually bigger.
WOW, bravo. Outstanding. Someone give this man a directing job, very very nicely put together. Informative and insightful, I was not bored for one moment. Sir, this video is inspirational.
U think thats tuff, try living in Australia. The price of fuel here is huge. At the moment we are paying about $1.55 a litre for petrol and $1.78 for diesel. Figure that out in gallons and the U.S. price looks good. Not only that but everything over here is a lot more spread out. A drive of 10 miles is nothing just to pick up milk and the paper.
Yeah. This'll all go away after President Obama nationalizes the oil companies. Just imagine: The Government running the oil companies instead of the oil companies running the government.
Just imagine the tax break you could get with Exxon money in the public coffers.
Seems to be working pretty well for Hugo Chavez...
Oh dont forget Starbucks, they are closing 600 stores starting in July. Thanks to fuel prices, about 12000 people will lose their jobs. Starbucks wouldnt been in this mess if fuel prices stay at $1.25 per gallon.
Remember fuel prices were under $1 and Big Oil were complaining about cheap prices 10 years ago.
Bush in office, Big Oil is HAPPY.
I got a solution, regulate the fuel prices. There's no fuel shortages, if there is, electric cars and trucks been out 100 years.
pcmiller2000- I don't think that Starbuck's problem has to do with fuel prices. Their prices were always too high and they were catering to a select group of people. No worries about those lost jobs, Tim Horton's will probably build 600 stores in the U.S. this year so it evens out. In case you're wondering who Tim Horton's is, they are the biggest coffee and donut business in Canada and always make plenty of money. They are expanding big time in the U.S. right now. Their donuts are good too. :)
pcmiler2000- I would imagine that Tim Horton's will expand all over including the deep south. They currently have stores in Michigan, Maine, Connecticut, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New York. There are more than 2,750 stores across Canada, and over 350 locations in the United States. :) Who knows, maybe in the near future you could be able to munch on some TimBits in your area. :D
i gotta say, however, that i see some probs with your video here. for instance, the cost of living in chicago is insane - you're probably paying 2-3 times as much for groceries and everyday needs....plus, you're still going to be using your car to head out to the burbs AND don't even get me started about the cook county taxes. i see where you're going, but living IN the city can be equally expensive (do i need to mention the rising costs of public transportation too?)
Your exactly correct. But tell that to the liberals in Congress thats going to give a 300billion dollars to a non failing mortgage group. They still deny the demands of the people to drill for domestic oil where the oil is. Perhaps Mrs. Pelosi needs to read the Declarations of Independence to realize what We the People mean and what We the People expect from their government. Drill oil now. The price of gasoline will be $1.50 per gallon in less than a year.
The bubble is bursting BECAUSE IT WAS A BUBBLE. In a healthy economy houses cost approx 3 times the average annual income. So if your area is mostly double income at 50K/yr, houses should assess at 300K. If it's double income at $35K, then expect 210K. Subprime allowed increased demand & artificially inflated housing values. Great (in the short term) for banks, not so great for people stuck paying a $500,000 mortgage on a house that should be $275,000.
While suburban sprawl is an issue (i.e., distance and lack of bike paths), it isn't the reason for the housing bubble. The bubble was created for two reasons..
1) Specialty loans tricked people into thinking they could afford the home.
2) Home values were soaring, so people felt safe with the loan.
What goes up must come down. Thus, the prices came down because these specialty loans began resetting and people couldn't afford higher rates. Thus, f'closures dropped home values.
r u kidding me? People fell into the subprime loan trap and now they are losing their homes. It is not because of the price of gas. Just don't go out and buy a hummer!
and the reason it's happening in suburbs is because new home buyers could only afford out there and many got the subprime loans. this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
gas? no, it was subprime loans. interest on mortgages shot up due to these type of loans & people could no longer afford their homes. that's why the feds r attacking mortgage lenders, cause the burst was all their fault. high gas prices r just a coincidence. the value of housing in condense cities went up, cause buyers know that the value of homes won't change where there's always been high demand to live, so now there's even higher demand there.
i seen this and i had to come here to comment.... WE DO NOT NEED OIL there can be many paths to find energy magnets hemp water think about FREE ENERGY for fucks sake type in water powered car SAVE MONEY FUCK TRHE OIL TYCOONS
LOL YOU ARE SO DUMB, first of all the gas didnt not burst the housing trouble, we have been having trouble with the economy since 2001 if you knew anything about economics you would know that.
mayb880: You're close, but its greed not hippies preventing the drilling. If you honestly think potheads and bell bottoms influence corporate and government agencies, I got a bridge to sell you! Just look at how many reserves are owned, yet not even touched by the major oil companies. They're purposely creating artificial demand just to get more money, period.
This clip isn't talking about changing the type of fuel source for automobiles. The automobile creates sprawl and low density settlement patterns. Cities contain higher density and utilize Multi-modal transit systems (bike, ped, train, trolley). This allows one be within close proximity of eateries, cinemas, grocery stores, etc. I would argue that the fuel problem is actually an automobile problem. Move to the city :)
I doubt your statistics. Please quote a source. 25% of a 30k income is $625 a month. That's 156 gallons of gas at $4 a gallon. If you get 15 miles to the gallon you an drive 2343 miles a month. Seems unbelievable to me.
I had my car converted to electric drive, I get only clean electricity (sun, wind)for 53 euros monthly. But most of the time I bike, we have now good bike roads (free from glass splitting and snow)and bikers are allowed to ride in many well signed streets against the direction of traffic. I don't ride fast so I'm not sweaty. I don't have weight problems. It's easier to demand bike roads from your local authorities than from the government that represents the oil industry & wants you to buy oil.
everyone that is complaning about gas and everything needs to get over it its NOT going to change, and it WILL get worse, there is no good outlook untill we use an alternitive soruce of fule, which wont happen because the oil companies run how vehicals are made, so get over it everyone , IM TIRED OF HEARING YOU COMPLAIN!
and besides not accepting drilling Obama receives huge monstrous lobby from Illinois ethanol producers the second largest farm of maize in US and the biggest producer of ethanol :P so if Obama gets elected just expect the prices of gas to go through roof? no it's going to space. NOBAMA!
WoW this is just so damn american, and most just cant face it -.- I just wish the government fixed the roads so you can walk/bike(where at some places you can't)
meh, one of many debunked lies about the ev1, read the full article or watch the movie, 5000 interested customers and happy prototype-users, the chevy volt is an ordinary electro-hybrid as developed decades ago, another fake progress release and maybe for harvesting the gas panic while keeping you on the needle..
energy and transportation are entirely lobby-territory so its very hard to get valid information, im surprised that the "drill here-now" propaganda scheme has already caught on, don't rely on mainstream channels, numbers of proved oil are extremely unreliable, clean coal will not be av. before 20-25 and is not proven to work, in any case it will be expensive energy! and the only vehicle you could really power with coal is an electric one :)
Every democrat on the fall ballot is part of the anti-energy party which is wrecking havoc on the economy and every family's budget. A vote for any Democrat is a vote for shortages, rising gas prices, rising unemployment, and falling production. period
This is a man-made meltdown, and make no mistake: the Democrats could halt and reverse the skyrocketing cost of oil but they are choosing not to. NOBAMA 08!
Sux to have a government full of satanic ritualistic thieves printing as much money as they need with NO accountability. Must be nice. They are stealing it all right out of your pocket books, bank accounts and soon, your real estate will get eminent domained.
Racist? Did you fall asleep in school? Canada is not a race, it's a nationality dumbass. Caucasian, black/african, asiatic, hispanic, etc - those are races. Damn you're dumb.
Not to be a nit-picker, but 1) "hispanic" is not properly speaking a racial classifier. It refers to Spanish-speaking people and not a phenotype. It's sloppily used as a US-census racial/ethnic category, which is maybe where the confusion comes from. and 2) Canada is a country, not a nationality. "Canadian" is a nationality, as in the sloppy synonym for "citizenship", although it doesn't refer to a "nation"- the country is too diverse for that word.
Monday 12:44 AM. Wall Street's computer will collect U.S. unemployement status. If no one hires people with disabilities, unemployed workers, people looking for jobs. Stock will drop which will included millions of companies.
O.K. what do you pay for a doctor, dentist, specialist, prescriptions, nanny, and other non-"freebies."
This along with XDRadio's post were probably the best on the page. Not only do we pay for gas here in the U.S. we also have to pay for our own healthcare and other freebies that you all get!
This is a comment on collinsb1 about all the "freebies" that other countries are given. These are by no means freebies. We all pay for them. Our taxes are higher than yours to pay for all these perks. Most of these programs are in the best interest of the general population and it just makes sense for every citizen to get "free" health care when it's needed.
The United States of America is a country that needs to radically change the way it does business if it's going to stay a world power.
honestly you people in the states got to stop complaining. The states has the cheapiest gas in the world basically we pay 1.50 a liter or to you amaerican we pay 6 dollars a gallon. So stop complaining. Another thing you united states people should not be called americans canada are canadians, mexico is mexicians yet we all live in america so you guys are not americans. It maybe a stupid rany but oh well I need to. So before you complain look at what other people have to go through.....peace out
umm we live in America. And people DO call us Americans. The United States is just another name for America, I also don't see how it's relevant to the video
its a comment, and my opinion you got to understand that it can be about anything and does not have to relate to the video. Just open up and listen for once man. Like the video is about united statesians "problems" which are not so problematic. I related my comment to that and to something I wanted to rant about them.
"United Statesians" ... You know... generally I like Canadians, but you guys sure can be petty dipshits sometimes.
We're American. The whole world calls us American. Get over it. You can be "North American" if you want, but otherwise, fuck off with this "United Statesian" bullshit.
dude calm down man learn to take a joke XD holy crap. Its a inside joke me and my friend came up with but technically everyone who lives in north America and south America are all Americans. I was only messing around geeze. Remember one thing to man for calling my a dipshit you have sunk to my level is all I can say.
i can't wait till our gas gets to $10.00USD a gallon. That would take europe up into the 20.00$ to 30.00$ range. That would be just about right. Mna I can't wait.
Sure, that's true, but everyone cannot live in your neighborhood, or you'd be barking about that. When the farmland gets tore up for houses, or the cities get full of condos and apartments people complain. But people have to live somewhere. So basically, we are screwed.
blame it on our urban planner.they plan our neighborhood w/ too much sprowl and without provision for bikepath.blame it also to the public wherein they buy big trucks & SUVs,they're not even a farmer or a fisherman or a hunter or a carpenter.they commute w/ big truck or SUV alone and sometimes load it occationally w/ one fishing fool in one weekend per month.
I work at home, bike daily for exercise, bike to stores to buy smaller items, visit neighbors whom I'm friends with, talk on cell, email, download movies (no TV!). Take walks to nearby parks with friends, throw frisbee, read books or just talk. Typically drive less than 3K miles in 16 mo. I don't have kids, but still, there are creative ways to live an interesting life without driving far expanses. Uh, humans did this for eons with only occasional trips & somehow... flourished. Be creative!
Gas Prices are the way they are not because of the government, but because the Gas Companies "Can", they even said that. I work at a gas station, I read the news paper everyday and I read the crap about gas prices. The governement cant do anything about the gas prices. Because it's a buisness, if they did something aobut the buisness, it would effect every buisness worldwide.
We have it hard no matter what you may think. Remember this and this alone WE LIVE IN AMERICA NOT CANADA. People have it hard where ever they are and what situation they are in.
read some marx... says that capitalism (like amreican conservatives do it) will always peak and need a war to blow of all the massproduced stuff, and we all know amerika isnt afraid to create enemies and go to war... GG noob USA owned by bad ideology
i would absolutely hate to live in sweden, that would suck. did you know that gas prices in venezuela are 25 cents a gallon. it is the cheapest gas prices on earth. I would move there if it weren't for the dictatorship problem of venezuela.
yes. gas prices have shot up. but there are diferent ways to pay less for gas outher than selling your car .such as the diesel power tuning box that can reduce your fuel emmisions by 20 percent and increase the top speed and performance. to know more. +34 653 234 597
Ive been riding my bike to work for two years now and I live in Texas. In Texas everything is spread out also. My distance to work is 20 miles back and forth. Though I am lucky because we have a really good bus system which helps me through half way of my trip to work. Ditch your cars everybody and get a bike or ride the bus!!!
ok think about this there are more people just trying to get by then people who dont worry about prices. but most people who make good money are smart enough to realize when you are spending four times as much money now then when you did 3 years ago and your average yearly pay raise is only like 3% its not good business if you have the money or not. besides gas prices raise prices of groceries and other items too
i just bought a bike yesterday! gas is just over $4/g. I live in a city north of capitol city, [5 miles] so I am lucky, I have a lot of stuff around me. I have been walking to work for 9 months now but it got too hot so I got my bike.
I'm in an American Rustbelt city about 95k city proper and 250k for the metropolitan area, 20 years old, and I ride a mountain bike 8 miles one way to work and 8 miles home every weekday just to work on an assembly line.
When I get a car I going to use it as little as possible. Only going when its raining, there's too much snow for bicycling, shopping, or commuting friends / family.
Everyone needs to contribute as much as possible in this day and age.
mmk...the reason the price of your homes are going down are because banks are giving loans to ppl that cant pay them off and the bank eventually goes out of business, has nothing to do with gas. o and i live in streamwood and welll...we have a 30 mile bike path.
and the reason gas prices are so high in germany is because they arent as dependent on oil as we are, our country uses gas for everything, they dont.
WAKE UP! We are being screwed by the BUSH CRIME FAMILY, the republicans, and CORPORATIONS.. 9 11 created SHOCK, and when people are in shock you can tell them anything!
Gas prices in Europe have been close to $10 for years...we have been lucky that both the Clinton & Bush presidencies have been successful in keeping our prices down lower than the rest of the world for years. England is $9 a gallon. Housing crisis is ignorant buyers signing up for variable interest rates.
ONe country does not make your point...check the WORLD out, you'll see. Oslo 9.85 Paris 9.43 Copenhagen 9.24 Rome 9.03 London 8.96 Berlin 8.68 Hong Kong 8.05

There is a better alternative to suburbs: rural small town living. Small towns can also meet all your needs in a small area which is walkable/bike-able, can avoid a lot of the problems of city living, and can still be geographically close enough to urban population centers to take advatage of their amenities on occassion. Besides, small towns have a much better ability than cities to meet another basic need...creating food from local gardens and the adjacent farm areas.
Also, consider decentralized business centers. Clusters of empyoment distributed around ring highways looping a city. THis allows commuters to get to jobs and NOT force them into a single city center to find high densitys of employment.
You an NOT create zoning laws that stop sprawl, we've seen this before. Suburbs are CITIES that are adjacent to major cities. If the major city is the employment hub, and modifies their zoning to mandate vertical development, cheap housing is forced to the burbs, unless 100% of the burbs do the same vertical development will NOT happen. That's highly unlikely - as they all want the tax income. Forget the top 4 or 5 major urban centers (NY, Chicago...etc) think about mid level cities.
Or, instead of praying for gas prices to drop, maybe start trying to do something about zoning laws. The "urban sprawl" as you call it, has always been a bad idea. Whether gas prices are $1 a gallon, or $10 a gallon, you're still driving everywhere with all the accompanying polution, traffic jams, etc.
So maybe it's time to start building things a little closer.. Maybe put in a few bike paths so that you actually have the option to bike somewhere without having to go onto the open road..?
Why don't you CAR POOL and have about five other people riding "IN" with you to the city? I plan what I'm doing so going to the movies includes the day I'm doing shopping at the mall, research at the library and having a dentist appt. It is called PLANNING.
Expensive...we can afford to spend 1.5 trillion in Afganistan and Iraq...let's keep that money here...beef up US security and get with the real answer. Mass produce hydro energy. You can't forget that the gas comes from water. How expensive is that for gas stations to pump.
Wow. I can't believe how much people spend on transportation out there. Your right that the suburb system simply doesn't make sense anymore. A lot of people are considering moving closer into cities or to train stations, so they can commute that way, but that public transit infrastructure needs improvement.
To be fair though, I'd like to point out that there isn't usually traffic on the highways on Sundays when you drive north of Chicago. The highway is currently under construction.
This is why Im moving into ether a city or some really really close knitted town. A. I hate Driving, B. I hate spending loads of money, C. CANT STAND SPENDING LOADS OF MONEY ON DRIVING!
Hi, my name is Remington Draper and I gave my heart to the Lord Jesus Christ in the summer of 2003 because I realized that I had broken God's Commandments and that He was going to judge me by them of judgment day. The same is true for everyone reading this. The good news is God Loves You! and sent Jesus to pay the price for our sins and if your willing to repent (which means to turn away from your sin) and put your trust in the Lord Jesus only to save you, He will and give you eternal life.
Let's face it, the Govenor of California drives a Hummer that runs on hydrogen gas. We have the technology but why aren't we mass producing them? Oh while we're at it why don't we mass produce hydrogen heating systems too? We're the crazy ones letting OPEC control us the way they are.
"Future Cars" it was a special on the science channel, this guy made a car that runs on air, now that is a good idea, it is working and it uses the car battery to suck in air and the pressure pushes the pistons...They just havnt found a way to mass produce it
Hard ah? And it'll get worse.. A house, a car, a computer, a t.v., a camera, a mobile, good food (does it still exist in U.S.A.?).. we're like in the 20's, in a correct life watching at gaz prices.. I hope there are things more important you are interrest into.. Even if you're right about the gaz crisis..
finland has the highest suicide rate of all western counties. you guys don't get enough sunlight, that's what keeps the immigrants away. i've been to helsinki and its sad.
People laugh when I say we are headed for a "depression". With things the way they are right now it'd be a miracle if the economy improves. I really think we are past the point of no return. The world economy and life as we know it will never be the same. Watch the stock market in October (or maybe even sooner). People are in for a big surprise. If you have more than 100k in the bank, it's wise to move the extra to alternate banks in sums no greater than 100k.

Wow! I wasn't expecting to see Buffalo Grove featured on youtube, considering I went to BGHS and grew up around there. Weird, but neat.
HeatherSchultzMusic 3 years ago
While suburban sprawl is an issue (i.e., distance and lack of bike paths), it isn't the reason for the housing bubble. The bubble was created for two reasons..
1) Specialty loans tricked people into thinking they could afford the home.
2) Home values were soaring, so people felt safe with the loan.
What goes up must come down. Thus, the prices came down because these specialty loans began resetting and people couldn't afford higher rates. Thus, f'closures dropped home values.
abigguitar 3 years ago
r u kidding me? People fell into the subprime loan trap and now they are losing their homes. It is not because of the price of gas. Just don't go out and buy a hummer!
mgalandon 3 years ago
and the reason it's happening in suburbs is because new home buyers could only afford out there and many got the subprime loans. this guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
getgo79 3 years ago
gas? no, it was subprime loans. interest on mortgages shot up due to these type of loans & people could no longer afford their homes. that's why the feds r attacking mortgage lenders, cause the burst was all their fault. high gas prices r just a coincidence. the value of housing in condense cities went up, cause buyers know that the value of homes won't change where there's always been high demand to live, so now there's even higher demand there.

What??? Do you think that $4-5 pr GALLON is alot???
That's 20 Norwegian Kroner.
1 US gallon = 3,8 litres gas.
We pay 14 NOK pr. liter.
That's 53,2 NOK pr. US gallon.
And $10,64 pr gallon... And we are one of the largest oil-nations.
So...shut up!

Move to the city :)
rlunderg16 3 years ago
I doubt your statistics. Please quote a source. 25% of a 30k income is $625 a month. That's 156 gallons of gas at $4 a gallon. If you get 15 miles to the gallon you an drive 2343 miles a month. Seems unbelievable to me.
madmik3 3 years ago
I had my car converted to electric drive, I get only clean electricity (sun, wind)for 53 euros monthly. But most of the time I bike, we have now good bike roads (free from glass splitting and snow)and bikers are allowed to ride in many well signed streets against the direction of traffic. I don't ride fast so I'm not sweaty. I don't have weight problems. It's easier to demand bike roads from your local authorities than from the government that represents the oil industry & wants you to buy oil.

energy and transportation are entirely lobby-territory so its very hard to get valid information, im surprised that the "drill here-now" propaganda scheme has already caught on, don't rely on mainstream channels, numbers of proved oil are extremely unreliable, clean coal will not be av. before 20-25 and is not proven to work, in any case it will be expensive energy! and the only vehicle you could really power with coal is an electric one :)

rhblakeman 3 years ago
rhblakeman:
Not to be a nit-picker, but 1) "hispanic" is not properly speaking a racial classifier. It refers to Spanish-speaking people and not a phenotype. It's sloppily used as a US-census racial/ethnic category, which is maybe where the confusion comes from. and 2) Canada is a country, not a nationality. "Canadian" is a nationality, as in the sloppy synonym for "citizenship", although it doesn't refer to a "nation"- the country is too diverse for that word.
so be careful

This is a comment on collinsb1 about all the "freebies" that other countries are given. These are by no means freebies. We all pay for them. Okay, answering the questions:
a) My commute looks like 10 miles each way, by bicycle - rain or shine.
b) I fill up once every 6-8 weeks - 12 gallons or about $50 at today's prices (it was cheaper the last time I got gas)
c) My mortgage payment is fixed and only changes due to property taxes going up to pay for waste in the schools
If you don't like high gas prices, drive less. If you used an ARM to buy a house you knew you couldn't afford, that's YOUR fault.

THis allows commuters to get to jobs and NOT force them into a single city center to find high densitys of employment.
angurisloud 3 years ago
You an NOT create zoning laws that stop sprawl, we've seen this before. Suburbs are CITIES that are adjacent to major cities. If the major city is the employment hub, and modifies their zoning to mandate vertical development, cheap housing is forced to the burbs, unless 100% of the burbs do the same vertical development will NOT happen. That's highly unlikely - as they all want the tax income. Forget the top 4 or 5 major urban centers (NY, Chicago...etc) think about mid level cities.
angurisloud 3 years ago
Or, instead of praying for gas prices to drop, maybe start trying to do something about zoning laws. The "urban sprawl" as you call it, has always been a bad idea. Whether gas prices are $1 a gallon, or $10 a gallon, you're still driving everywhere with all the accompanying polution, traffic jams, etc.
So maybe it's time to start building things a little closer.. Maybe put in a few bike paths so that you actually have the option to bike somewhere without having to go onto the open road..?
asta179 3 years ago

Expensive...we can afford to spend 1.5 trillion in Afganistan and Iraq...let's keep that money here...beef up US security and get with the real answer. Mass produce hydro energy. You can't forget that the gas comes from water. How expensive is that for gas stations to pump.
wyn267 3 years ago

I hope there are things more important you are interrest into.. Even if you're right about the gaz crisis..

Haha in Finland gas prices are more than double the higher and the americans are crying for their prices being too high? That's just stupid.

HAHA. Finland has fewer people than NYC where I live. It would collapse with one tenth of the illegal immigrant population America has absorbed.
HAHA. If America ever fails, you will belong to RUSSIA! HAHA ARSE!
