Great video Dave! Very informative and great instructional voice. Will prob get back with some questions when I get closer to setting up a video rig. Thanks for posting.
im working on a laptop as well and i want to start recording good sound. i have a cheap regular microphone. but whenever i record i get alot of hissing/static background. do i need one of those usd soundcard?
@extremebiker2005 I have noticed some laptopshave a tendency to put out a lot of noise as far as the fans for some people.
You may want to borrow other mics and cables/adapters and see if they put out the same noise. If different mics an cables don't solve the problem then its either the hardware or software within the laptop. I would google the model of your laptop and words like "mic hissing" or similar to see if other people have solved the problem already. Possibly with driver updates.
OOO Branson thats pretty cool. Do you have any advice regarding sound if you like recording on set not vlogging. I mean like if you're recording a film with your friends how would I have good sound on that?
@Hilldebrand Wll try to get a directional mic. Meaning it doesn't hear much except for what is right in front of it. Then make up a boom pole so you can hang it over the heads of the people in the shot. A piece of aluminum tubing should work. The kind you use to put up a TV antenna. Wrap the part you are going to hold with foam like insulation for a hot water pipe an maybe some duct tape. This keeps the sound of your hands from traveling up the pole to the mic.
your being a great help. Is there any particular Directional mic model or brand you think is better than the others (and cheap)? I probably will write with more questions later on but this is really helping. I'll sub.
Man, I would cherish a talk by you sharing some insight in your professional experience with sound and picture. You manage to explain a lot of stuff with an easygoing manner, so it gets me to want to hear more. Very nice and useful. Tx!!
foketesz: I am happy to do public speaking. All ya gotta do is get me there, feed me and give me a little jingle in my pocket an I am there. Long as I am talkin about somethin I know :)
Good tips Dave. To add to your tips. I've done sound for movies and tv networks for decades. Mics work well from above too, like a boom mic, but believe it or not, they sound better from underneath your chin. Your body shields the mic from sound that comes from behind, kind of like when you used the towel to shield reflections.
No shit, this is weird, just b4 i started watchin this vid, i was wondering how i could get a better sound out of my camera & tried pluggin my headphones in2 it(doesn't work), but while tryin that, u were talkin bout this, weird ay!!!
GREAT ADVICE DAVE, I'm def gonna try sum of that!!! Thank u AGAIN, just 4 being!
Great advice! I am learning to edit videos and I would like to know if I am making my video in the best formate for utube and web. Properties: Create video file: (Pal DVD 4.3 formate;) DVD; (MPEG file 24bits, 720x576 25fps,) Compression: (100%), Video data rate:(8000) My video utube & web file is (wmv broadband 352x288 - 30fps) My camera is a Canon / digital video camcorder XM1.Thank you!
dave, you're not scary, you're just really clear with no extra crap! my challenge is portable strong lighting tho. thanks a lot anyway, and keep on doing what you do.
Shoemedia: Well the only issue with portable lighting is the power. Once you have the power those halogen work lamps still work great. To get power it's all about an extension cord to 110, a generator or an inverter in your car. Other than that you can construct a reflector if your using daylight. I recommend looking up The Samuel French book store in Hollywood and asking them for some good books on film lighting. Good luck :)
Great basic information for video . It does not matter if it You Tube or any other medium the same goes for any camera system light is everything . Thanks Dave great video mate.
well i don't need help for looking better on youtube but i need help in what i can put on youtube beacuse here is nothing going on in crewe the only place i can go is to the monument were people do insane things sometimes but do you know how much it would cost to get a portable camera??? i know you do it in dollers but i can work from that thanks for reading my comment i enjoy watching your videos
Thanx Dave. That helped a lot. I generally use sunlight from a nearby window to light my vids but it looks like crap. Hopefully, your method will help.
Great Info. Question about shooting with a video camera. I have a Sony TRV900 3CCD camera. Taking the video, editing on my iMac using iMovie HD, saving it in a high quality Quicktime movie file and uploading it to YouTube. They totally fall apart. If you look at some of my slide shows and videos, you can see they look like they have been compressed twice. Is there a good way using the iMac to edit, save and upload and get the quality you are getting?
I am using the windows video software which came with my Windows XP operating system. It's very basic an I just let it use its own default settings. It spits out a .wmv file. It seems to do quite well for capturing. It's not very good for editing. Even still, it's very basic abilities made every video I have done to date except the clown video which was done in Adobe Premiere.
Hey Bro, you've got detailed and friendly stuff going on here.. way cool! Would you be interested in letting us in on your format/resolution/saving image for YouTube settings??? This is the place I keep tripping on. Your 9 minutes looks great. How to pull that one off?
Really helpful, thanks. The lighting issue has been the biggest snag for me. Dunno if you had voice training, but you articulate and project really well.
Believe it or not, I don't mic my guitar. I just use the one mic for both voice an guitar. You could get a small, cheap mixing board and then mic the guitar and go that way but I have not needed to. An my acoustic guitar actually has a mic in it with a jack just like an electric but I don't bother using it.
wow - i'm in AVP, and so it's good to hear the consumer end of what to do to get good images. myself, i use my hand held digital minidv camera.... my web cam shows too much of the room, which the boyfriend isn't comfy with, so i film in the bedroom against our white walls lol... so far any way... thanks for advice.. i have photography lights with umbrellas i may end up *having* to use even with my minidv cam.. :)
and do you know what i could do about the converting of the picture quality, because i uploaded a video that was very high quality when played on my computer but when i uploaded it the quality dramatically dropper...if you wish to see the video to which i am referring to it is called The Search for the sasquatch and here is the url youtube(dot) com/watch?v=qJd9RlHcuGs&mode=user&search=
(yea btw im nothin big but im in tech theatre and i LOVE it!!!)
lol we did beauty and the beast for a christmas play and we put the whole scean on rollers
lol it was funny right in the middle of the play 3 casters broke while i was moving a big portion and so we had to take the whole set to a reverse corner and i had to get under there and repace them(take em out and drill the bolt pilot holes)
exactly what kind of art paper? different types have different thicknesses. i will assume that it is a thicker breed of art paper, like water color or canvas quality. do you know exactly what type it is?
KingLegolasG : Any normal thickness white paper will do. Even typing paper. I used children's art paper I get at the 99 cent store cuz it is wider/longer and gives me a wider area of diffusion which I don't have to be careful not to lean out of. Once again, tests are important.
cool vid man great tips do the same with the books 4 my camera though not the mic i just use a camera jpeg and my mic and amp dont have a plug 2 plug my mic into the puter but mvids are raw as raw can be lol
hinoraito : I am not familiar with the kinds of cams out there today. So I am going to reiterate that no matter what kinda camera or what conditions you are in, lighting is your most important consideration. Even in daylight, a good reflector board or brighter lights will bring out the detail. I always recommend doing tests to find your optimum setup.
Alright. I'll be looking into the same kind of lighting that you used (I've seen people use it at my old school).I'll have to be testing different settings from there.
I have a question for you. I would like to get a hand held camera that aint too expensive but will maintain good quality to make videos with it. Since you have a background in the film industry, I was hoping you could suggest something to me.
Also, I've been doing videos about my drawings made on my computer. But sometimes, the image quality is really bad and I'm kind of frustrated that the viewers lose some of the image quality/details.
Do you have something to recommend for this as well?
hinoraito : If you are recording with a video camera off of the screen you need a camera with manual exposure capability and then do tests. Even then I suggest you find someone who is doing a lot of that (I don't)an get their input. I would look into video capture software that will record it within the machine without an external camera. Once again you need expert advice from a source other than I.
