  • hey mate, i set it all up and installed backtrack, but it never asked me to make a login or password.

Now when it restarted its asking for login and password, but i didnt make one.

    what can i do?!

  • @boofhead123456 user - root

    pass - toor

  • Any reason as to why it doesn't save my network interface config? Every time on startup I have to set eth0 to up and use dhclient.

  • A question for you. For some reason, my vmware can't find the wireless adapter. I'm using intel 5100. I try to add it from virtual machine setting. But it can't find it.

  • @Alexandrus

    Username : root

    Pass: toor

  • Its asking me for a login, what's the username and password?

  • NICE NICE NCIE NICE NICE NICE NICE NICE NICE TUTO MAN EXELENT.

  • hello my name is george i watched your video and followed the steps i am using vmware workstation7 but there is a problem, when i type in airmon-ng it says: Interface Chipset Driver but my wireless adaptor does not show on the backtrack interface i realy need your help how to make it work and by the my laptop has got a built in wireless card but i still use a wireless adaptot

  • i was on this backtrack and then it took me to like a log on thing and the user was root and i put toor for it but it wont let me log in

  • can it also let you use the c drive instead of the h

  • do you need a disk for this?

  • any way to work around the problem.

  • Once you've logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:

    - Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management

    - Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)

    - Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.

    - Open a Terminal (Shell) window and tpye: kdesu konqueror

    - Enter / as the location and Right-Click on the Home directory -> Properties -> Permissions and grant View/Modify to Group/Other

  • @mushroomHEADBANGERS hey do u have to download this on to a blank cd ?

  • Is there a reason why the user installation skip from step 2 to step 7.

  • Yes, the latest release excludes these steps since Backtrack is intended to be a Pen-Drive OS or Live-OS rather then an installation with multiple users accounts.

  • What should i do it say that there is a squashfs error. failed to read block!! unable to read id index table

  • It'd be helpful if you could specify when this error occurs. I am assuming it occurs either during partition or installing to a partition. I believe I got a similar message before.

  • @TheBrad32 I am getting the same problem. It is after you run backtrack that it happens the screen gos to after where you press enter for the resolution and then when the sd is loading that happens.

  • why is the calibration on backtrack wrong

  • What do you mean Calibration?

  • hey how come on backtrack the calibration is wrong how do you change it

  • I'm getting to step 2 on the install, where it ask for you location. I'm not sure if its freezing up or what, but its going bonkers and keeps going to random locations from canada to the bahamas back to places in the US. It won't let me click forward. Help?

  • Whoa, sounds very bizarre. Try rebooting the Virtual Machine and ensuring the Virtual Machine has sufficient memory.

  • the VMware Fusion UI is so different i cant even figure it out.

  • very nice video leh...

so how do i add a user, because the step already remove

  • - Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management

  • yeah my one keeps coming up with the install icon in the left hand corner and it is a real struggle to deal with, can u look in to it more because everytime i try it keeps happening.... please help

  • i am also with windows if it helps

  • I will try to do so. Another user was having similar issues. I am awaiting a PM from the user so that I can proceed in looking into it.

  • Can you do the same procedure but using the VMware picture (.vmx file) so the changes will actually save because they dont save when you use the iso image

  • The VMX file is simply a configuration file for the Virtual Machine. You can edit the file in a text editor so if you know the syntax and the desired settings you could do skip the beginning steps by doing this but you'll still need to create a VMDK so that you can install the image (ISO) to the Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK).

  • Hi there !

First - thank you for this tutorial , grate job !

    However i have a small problem ...

Id exactly what you do , but my installation process skips steps 5 and 6 . Any suggestions ?

    Thanx in advance .

  • Nope! The latest release of Backtrack excludes these steps so it's nothing to worry about. Just use the generic root login

    Username: root

    Password: toor

  • im having some trouble after i do the instalation k file or what ever its called where you go through country ext. after i install it all it restarts then boots up with the install file still on top of the page. i click back on it and it goes to partitions ext i dont no whats happening but looks like the partition storing, i follow every step you give but been over it 4 times and dose same thing over and over please help

  • Very odd....Did you actually create a VDMK (Virtual Machine Disk)? It sounds like you may be running off just the ISO and changes aren't taking effect.

  • thanks for the reply,is the steps for making a vdmk in the tut? its just me being dumb. ill try again tonight to try insall it . thanks again buddy really greatfull for your help.

  • Yes it is. You're welcome.

  • i have just tried it again i did exact same as you do but its still comeing up with the settup file in the corner the install shell. i dont think its saving my changes iam doing because it loadz back up with wrong time ext, and asking about the partitions but it has 3 choices i hit the guided one like in your tut and it wont let me save and continue.the new choice is a guided resize scs13.any advice if not ll just delite it all and restart the process and hope that works. thanks for your time

  • I would delete it and restart the process. It sounds like you didn't properly setup a VMDK and are just loading with the ISO.

  • i went on the backtrack website and in the "how to" section and found the similar problem to mine its called the double boot for windows.its the same thing whats happening on there. but i kant understand the partition thing,if you get chance kan you look at it for me and try find out where iam going wrong, thanks for your help

  • Sure, send me a PM with the link please.

  • @mushroomHEADBANGERS another good tutorials i liked your pervious ones "how to hack wirless network"dude you helped me alot keep up good work!

    thankz ...thankz.......thankz ...

  • excellent tutorial keep up the good work

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate it :)

  • Great vids man. Know of any way to get the crappy broadcom wireless drivers to work?

  • What do you mean? Like install it or get the adapter to be recognized in VMWare?

    Thanks BTW :)

  • Sorry i wasn't more clear...sometimes i'm retarded.

I mean, everything i've read says that broadcom wireless adapters don't work well with BT3/4 (even says on BT's site). I started looking for an intel adapter, but if you knew of a good way to get the broadcom's work I'd give that a go before i bought the new nic. I've read to try using ndiswrapper but i've read that doesn't support active injection. the more i think about it the more i think i should look into the intel nic.

  • That sounds like what you should do. I don't have a Broadcom adapter so I'm not to sure. If you really want to crack a wireless network just upgrade your wireless NIC. Make sure it's compatible first though. They are pretty cheap.

  • Found a couple on line for $20. Not bad. I can browse with firefox through my VM but when i run iwconfig i get a message saying "no wireless extensions".

Thanks again for the vids. Very informative and your other stuff is entertaining too. The Salvia vid was epic! "I just want to get a soda!!!"

  • Lol thank you and you're welcome :)

  • This is more of an informative post for you and your subscribers. HP has a mini-PCI bios whitelist that locks you down to only certain "HP approved" wifi cards which means the one your model was shipped with. They're even doing this retroactivly. Even older models are getting the restrictions applied via BIOS updates. HP FAIL.

  • Oh that's fucking lame.

  • i can't choose a user name or a pass word for my back track

step 5 is missing what should i do???????

  • I'm really baffled as to why some users encounter this issue but regardless. You should be able to login with the default credentials:

    Username - root

    Password - toor

  • Once you've logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:

    - Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management

    - Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)

    - Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.

    - Open a Terminal (Shell) window and tpye: kdesu konqueror

    - Enter / as the location and Right-Click on the Home directory -> Properties -> Permissions and grant View/Modify to Group/Other

  • it doesnt have all those options on vmware player...

  • Could you be more specific....

  • with VMware player i cant choose cutsom install or the space needed or the to create it as a new system install, it only lets me choose the iso file, the bit where you said to use 8GB and the linux install and the naming of the file.

  • most simplistic and easy to understand tut i have seen for this, its like u r holding a noobs hand as you guide him through the scary and confusing world that is computer virtualization lol

  • Haha, your wording is not only brilliant but also flattering. I strive to cover all the main points and touch base on topics most would be intimidated by in a way that's simple and easy to follow along for the most novice users. A lot of tutorials out there just show the steps or don't give voice-overs. I feel that steps should not only be shown but explained as well with good video and audio details.

Thanks for your kind feed-back, means a lot :)

  • can it on virtual pc?

  • Can what on a Virtual Machine?

  • please answer my query on part 2 please

  • I did, I haven't had the chance to get on within the past few days.

  • hey on windows u dont have as much stuff as you do in linux??

  • There is much more applications available on Windows then Linux.

  • I have the same problem as RufffRyderss. when using the. "sh" to install then skip steps 5 and 6 on it (with username and password) can you help me?

  • @mushroomHEADBANGERS Backtrack won't let me input anything at all for the password.. any suggestions on why its happening?

  • I'm not to sure what you specifically. I assume you're referring to creating a user? Guyver8201a above discovered why this option is no longer available. I will be updating a work-around for this soon.

  • on the backtrack site a developer said they removed those options because backtrack is meant to run as a root user

  • Ah, well thank you for clarifying upon this. I discovered a work around anyways so I'm going to update the details in the Video Description for those that really want to make a new user. Thanks again :)

  • Great vid..looks like your've been busy. Need to catch up on your vids. Ive been using the bt4 beta but just got bt4final ISO and vmimage recently so, these steps will come in handy!

  • Thanks! Indeed I have. I'm glad this video will be useful though. I always appreciate comments and ratings reflecting user's feedback on the video so thank you very much :D

  • i have one problem when i was installing the (s.h) it skips stages wen you have toput in your details like username and password

  • yes i had the same problem.

    do as he mentions..

also there is a slight difference in what you want to do and what you will do in the end:P

but changing your password should be ok with you. also, the default passcode is root for name, an toor for password.. thank cj for this:P

    and read the previous comments

  • Cj can you explain this??: 9:03 you are on step 4..

when i click on next, it loads the partition.. but after that, it takes me straight to step 7 without letting me edit the name and the pass code as you do!!i did it twice and it did the same!!and i just dont know what pass and login to give..

  • That's very odd. Try closing out of the install and re-launching it. Ensure you don't click twice or anything. You could always try logging in with the default credentials too:

    root

    toor

  • @mushroomHEADBANGERS i found my way and i managed to install it.

i also recorded it case you want to see what i did and correct me if i did any bullshits.

if i want to turn off the VMDK i will just use power off? or something else??also i thought that drug and drop would work..do i have to type anything extra so that VMware tools start fanctioning??

  • Part two shows how to install VMWare Tools. After you proceed with the installation it should say it completed. You can just power off or reset the VMDK. It will always still in your VMWare so you don't have to worry about it deleting itself or something.

  • @mushroomHEADBANGERS but i cant drug and drop for example..

  • @valcamas i mean from windows to backtrack..

but from backtrack to windows it is possible..

  • @valcamas i will practice with it tomorrow and then i will tell you!!

  • Sounds good.

  • when i try to drug and drop from vista to Backtrack, i cant. but from backtrack to vista it is possible. but, if i try to copy paste, from both directories then it can be done. i was too sleepy yesterday that my brain stuck:D

also about the root and toor, do you know how to change them from the inside to something different?

  • Once you've logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:

    - Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management

    - Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)

    - Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.

    - Open a Terminal (Shell) window and tpye: kdesu konqueror

    - Enter / as the location and Right-Click on the Home directory -> Properties -> Permissions and grant View/Modify to Group and Other

  • Also, be sure to have the option to "Apply changes to all subfolders and their content" is selected.
