Dude, I love your tutorials, but this one is apparently a little outdated. Since Jan. 2010 we now have Backtrack 5 and VMWare 4. (whatever). I have spent 3 days now trying to get this crap to work, and I keep coming up with the same damn error: vmx86.sys handle not valid or missing. I have tried uninstalling VMWare SEVERAL TIMES and have double and triple checked that I have the proper ISO downloaded for Backtrack.......please help!!!!
Kick ass tutorial!!!!! This tutorial answered all my questions regarding installing Backtrack. For a while I was having problems installing vmware tools. Your tutorial was the only one I could find that gave complete instructions to installing Backtrack linux. Looking forward to more tutorials. Great work!!!!!
once i configure all the settings when creating a new virtual machine the vm player just say loading... and nothing else happends. what could be the problem?
HI, after installing VMWare player and creating a virtual machine with the backtrack.iso it loads to a point where it says type startx and says the default password for root. I put startx and it loads for sometime and then all I get is a black page and nothing else. What have I done wrong?
its almost impossible for me to use my mouse in backtrack. the mouse is clicking on things an inch or so higher than the pointer.. the only solution ive found was to install vmware tools, but this is turning out to be impossible with out the use of the mouse? im really stuck on this, is there a way around using the mouse to install vmware tools?
@skyhighguan hey did u ever figure out how to get the usb wifi adapter to work??? look at the video on my page and tell me if your having the same problem if you could......
@ah7149407 i'm using linux mint x64 at this moment in time. backtrack 4r2 is installed on an older laptop of mine just don't understand why the install skips from 4 to 7 with no option to create an account? but and works great with the awus036nh wifi adapter for cracking wep! what are you using now? what's your setup?
Can anyone give me a short summary how to install VirtualBox/BackTrack 4 in a windows xp computer. My WiFi Adapter RealTek RTL 8187 doesn't make contact.

No RTL 8187, which is usb-connected to my computer. (And connected to my internet modem. This works).
As a reply, a short summary about how to install the RTL 8187 correctly. With other instructions.
All worked for me but when i type for example "nedit file1.txt &" it opens the editor and when i press save it says " No space left on disc". I can't understand what is going on ehen i have 6 gb left on this partittion......please HELP (Still learning LINUX)
I love your videos dude, they are just clear and easy to follow. I have a question please, can I follow the same steps in installing Backtrack 4-R1? what kernel shall I use? And if its not the same process, would you be able to provide instructions or a video tutorial? Thanks

Hello, when I type in airmon-ng command in backtrack, nothing is showing below INTERFACE ,CHIPSET and DRIVER? How do I resolve this? I have a built in wifi card on my Dell Inspiron 1501.
A question for you. For some reason, my vmware can't find the wireless adapter. I'm using intel 5100. I try to add it from virtual machine setting. But it can't find it.
hey when I installed it it didnt give me a window as you got on to write in your name I only got the restart button and I restarted what do I need to do?

Yes, the latest release excludes these steps since Backtrack is intended to be a Pen-Drive OS or Live-OS rather then an installation with multiple users accounts.
It'd be helpful if you could specify when this error occurs. I am assuming it occurs either during partition or installing to a partition. I believe I got a similar message before.
@TheBrad32 I am getting the same problem. It is after you run backtrack that it happens the screen gos to after where you press enter for the resolution and then when the sd is loading that happens.
I'm getting to step 2 on the install, where it ask for you location. I'm not sure if its freezing up or what, but its going bonkers and keeps going to random locations from canada to the bahamas back to places in the US. It won't let me click forward. Help?
yeah my one keeps coming up with the install icon in the left hand corner and it is a real struggle to deal with, can u look in to it more because everytime i try it keeps happening.... please help
Can you do the same procedure but using the VMware picture (.vmx file) so the changes will actually save because they dont save when you use the iso image
The VMX file is simply a configuration file for the Virtual Machine. You can edit the file in a text editor so if you know the syntax and the desired settings you could do skip the beginning steps by doing this but you'll still need to create a VMDK so that you can install the image (ISO) to the Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK).
im having some trouble after i do the instalation k file or what ever its called where you go through country ext. after i install it all it restarts then boots up with the install file still on top of the page. i click back on it and it goes to partitions ext i dont no whats happening but looks like the partition storing, i follow every step you give but been over it 4 times and dose same thing over and over please help
Very odd....Did you actually create a VDMK (Virtual Machine Disk)? It sounds like you may be running off just the ISO and changes aren't taking effect.
thanks for the reply,is the steps for making a vdmk in the tut? its just me being dumb. ill try again tonight to try insall it . thanks again buddy really greatfull for your help.
i have just tried it again i did exact same as you do but its still comeing up with the settup file in the corner the install shell. i dont think its saving my changes iam doing because it loadz back up with wrong time ext, and asking about the partitions but it has 3 choices i hit the guided one like in your tut and it wont let me save and continue.the new choice is a guided resize scs13.any advice if not ll just delite it all and restart the process and hope that works. thanks for your time
i went on the backtrack website and in the "how to" section and found the similar problem to mine its called the double boot for windows.its the same thing whats happening on there. but i kant understand the partition thing,if you get chance kan you look at it for me and try find out where iam going wrong, thanks for your help
Sorry i wasn't more clear...sometimes i'm retarded.
I mean, everything i've read says that broadcom wireless adapters don't work well with BT3/4 (even says on BT's site). I started looking for an intel adapter, but if you knew of a good way to get the broadcom's work I'd give that a go before i bought the new nic. I've read to try using ndiswrapper but i've read that doesn't support active injection. the more i think about it the more i think i should look into the intel nic.
That sounds like what you should do. I don't have a Broadcom adapter so I'm not to sure. If you really want to crack a wireless network just upgrade your wireless NIC. Make sure it's compatible first though. They are pretty cheap.
Found a couple on line for $20. Not bad. I can browse with firefox through my VM but when i run iwconfig i get a message saying "no wireless extensions".
Thanks again for the vids. Very informative and your other stuff is entertaining too. The Salvia vid was epic! "I just want to get a soda!!!"
This is more of an informative post for you and your subscribers. HP has a mini-PCI bios whitelist that locks you down to only certain "HP approved" wifi cards which means the one your model was shipped with. They're even doing this retroactivly. Even older models are getting the restrictions applied via BIOS updates. HP FAIL.
with VMware player i cant choose cutsom install or the space needed or the to create it as a new system install, it only lets me choose the iso file, the bit where you said to use 8GB and the linux install and the naming of the file.
most simplistic and easy to understand tut i have seen for this, its like u r holding a noobs hand as you guide him through the scary and confusing world that is computer virtualization lol
Haha, your wording is not only brilliant but also flattering. I strive to cover all the main points and touch base on topics most would be intimidated by in a way that's simple and easy to follow along for the most novice users. A lot of tutorials out there just show the steps or don't give voice-overs. I feel that steps should not only be shown but explained as well with good video and audio details.
I'm not to sure what you specifically. I assume you're referring to creating a user? Guyver8201a above discovered why this option is no longer available. I will be updating a work-around for this soon.
Ah, well thank you for clarifying upon this. I discovered a work around anyways so I'm going to update the details in the Video Description for those that really want to make a new user. Thanks again :)
Great vid..looks like your've been busy. Need to catch up on your vids. Ive been using the bt4 beta but just got bt4final ISO and vmimage recently so, these steps will come in handy!
Thanks! Indeed I have. I'm glad this video will be useful though. I always appreciate comments and ratings reflecting user's feedback on the video so thank you very much :D
Cj can you explain this??: 9:03 you are on step 4..
when i click on next, it loads the partition.. but after that, it takes me straight to step 7 without letting me edit the name and the pass code as you do!!i did it twice and it did the same!!and i just dont know what pass and login to give..
That's very odd. Try closing out of the install and re-launching it. Ensure you don't click twice or anything. You could always try logging in with the default credentials too:
i also recorded it case you want to see what i did and correct me if i did any bullshits.
if i want to turn off the VMDK i will just use power off? or something else??also i thought that drug and drop would work..do i have to type anything extra so that VMware tools start fanctioning??
Part two shows how to install VMWare Tools. After you proceed with the installation it should say it completed. You can just power off or reset the VMDK. It will always still in your VMWare so you don't have to worry about it deleting itself or something.
when i try to drug and drop from vista to Backtrack, i cant. but from backtrack to vista it is possible. but, if i try to copy paste, from both directories then it can be done. i was too sleepy yesterday that my brain stuck:D
also about the root and toor, do you know how to change them from the inside to something different?
mine keeps on the Loading -- screen

I will try to do so. Another user was having similar issues. I am awaiting a PM from the user so that I can proceed in looking into it.

Can you do the same procedure but using the VMware picture (.vmx file) so the changes will actually save because they dont save when you use the iso image
blacksiddis 1 year ago
The VMX file is simply a configuration file for the Virtual Machine. You can edit the file in a text editor so if you know the syntax and the desired settings you could do skip the beginning steps by doing this but you'll still need to create a VMDK so that you can install the image (ISO) to the Virtual Machine Disk (VMDK).

Hi there !
First - thank you for this tutorial , grate job !
However i have a small problem ...
Id exactly what you do , but my installation process skips steps 5 and 6 . Any suggestions ?
Thanx in advance .
Mifodiy35 2 years ago
Nope! The latest release of Backtrack excludes these steps so it's nothing to worry about. Just use the generic root login
Username: root
Password: toor

im having some trouble after i do the instalation k file or what ever its called where you go through country ext. after i install it all it restarts then boots up with the install file still on top of the page. i click back on it and it goes to partitions ext i dont no whats happening but looks like the partition storing, i follow every step you give but been over it 4 times and dose same thing over and over please help
murkin3245 2 years ago
Very odd....Did you actually create a VDMK (Virtual Machine Disk)? It sounds like you may be running off just the ISO and changes aren't taking effect.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
thanks for the reply,is the steps for making a vdmk in the tut? its just me being dumb. ill try again tonight to try insall it . thanks again buddy really greatfull for your help.
murkin3245 2 years ago
Yes it is. You're welcome.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
i have just tried it again i did exact same as you do but its still comeing up with the settup file in the corner the install shell. i dont think its saving my changes iam doing because it loadz back up with wrong time ext, and asking about the partitions but it has 3 choices i hit the guided one like in your tut and it wont let me save and continue.the new choice is a guided resize scs13.any advice if not ll just delite it all and restart the process and hope that works. thanks for your time
murkin3245 2 years ago
I would delete it and restart the process. It sounds like you didn't properly setup a VMDK and are just loading with the ISO.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
i went on the backtrack website and in the "how to" section and found the similar problem to mine its called the double boot for windows.its the same thing whats happening on there. but i kant understand the partition thing,if you get chance kan you look at it for me and try find out where iam going wrong, thanks for your help

Sure, send me a PM with the link please.

Great vids man. Know of any way to get the crappy broadcom wireless drivers to work?
cw0802 2 years ago
What do you mean? Like install it or get the adapter to be recognized in VMWare?
Thanks BTW :)
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
Sorry i wasn't more clear...sometimes i'm retarded.
I mean, everything i've read says that broadcom wireless adapters don't work well with BT3/4 (even says on BT's site). I started looking for an intel adapter, but if you knew of a good way to get the broadcom's work I'd give that a go before i bought the new nic. I've read to try using ndiswrapper but i've read that doesn't support active injection. the more i think about it the more i think i should look into the intel nic.
cw0802 2 years ago
That sounds like what you should do. I don't have a Broadcom adapter so I'm not to sure. If you really want to crack a wireless network just upgrade your wireless NIC. Make sure it's compatible first though. They are pretty cheap.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago

HP FAIL.

Oh that's fucking lame.

i can't choose a user name or a pass word for my back track
step 5 is missing what should i do???????

I'm really baffled as to why some users encounter this issue but regardless. You should be able to login with the default credentials:
Username - root
Password - toor
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
Once you've logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:
- Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management
- Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)
- Select New and proceed with creating the desired user-account. Close out when done.

it doesnt have all those options on vmware player...
Kaos1278 2 years ago
Could you be more specific....
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
with VMware player i cant choose cutsom install or the space needed or the to create it as a new system install, it only lets me choose the iso file, the bit where you said to use 8GB and the linux install and the naming of the file.
Kaos1278 2 years ago
most simplistic and easy to understand tut i have seen for this, its like u r holding a noobs hand as you guide him through the scary and confusing world that is computer virtualization lol
ftharcae 2 years ago
Haha, your wording is not only brilliant but also flattering. I strive to cover all the main points and touch base on topics most would be intimidated by in a way that's simple and easy to follow along for the most novice users. A lot of tutorials out there just show the steps or don't give voice-overs. I feel that steps should not only be shown but explained as well with good video and audio details.
Thanks for your kind feed-back, means a lot :)

@mushroomHEADBANGERS Backtrack won't let me input anything at all for the password.. any suggestions on why its happening?
Jrich09rider 2 years ago
I'm not to sure what you specifically. I assume you're referring to creating a user? Guyver8201a above discovered why this option is no longer available. I will be updating a work-around for this soon.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
on the backtrack site a developer said they removed those options because backtrack is meant to run as a root user
guyver8201a 2 years ago
Ah, well thank you for clarifying upon this. I discovered a work around anyways so I'm going to update the details in the Video Description for those that really want to make a new user. Thanks again :)
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
Great vid..looks like your've been busy. Need to catch up on your vids. Ive been using the bt4 beta but just got bt4final ISO and vmimage recently so, these steps will come in handy!

Thanks! Indeed I have. I'm glad this video will be useful though. I always appreciate comments and ratings reflecting user's feedback on the video so thank you very much :D

i have one problem when i was installing the (s.h) it skips stages wen you have toput in your details like username and password
RufffRyderss 2 years ago 2
yes i had the same problem.
do as he mentions..
also there is a slight difference in what you want to do and what you will do in the end:P
but changing your password should be ok with you. also, the default passcode is root for name, an toor for password.. thank cj for this:P
and read the previous comments
valcamas 2 years ago
Cj can you explain this??: 9:03 you are on step 4..
when i click on next, it loads the partition.. but after that, it takes me straight to step 7 without letting me edit the name and the pass code as you do!!i did it twice and it did the same!!and i just dont know what pass and login to give..
valcamas 2 years ago
That's very odd. Try closing out of the install and re-launching it. Ensure you don't click twice or anything. You could always try logging in with the default credentials too:
root
toor
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
@mushroomHEADBANGERS i found my way and i managed to install it.
i also recorded it case you want to see what i did and correct me if i did any bullshits.
if i want to turn off the VMDK i will just use power off? or something else??also i thought that drug and drop would work..do i have to type anything extra so that VMware tools start fanctioning??
valcamas 2 years ago
Part two shows how to install VMWare Tools. After you proceed with the installation it should say it completed. You can just power off or reset the VMDK. It will always still in your VMWare so you don't have to worry about it deleting itself or something.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
@mushroomHEADBANGERS but i cant drug and drop for example..
valcamas 2 years ago
@valcamas i mean from windows to backtrack..
but from backtrack to windows it is possible..
valcamas 2 years ago
@valcamas i will practice with it tomorrow and then i will tell you!!
valcamas 2 years ago
Sounds good.
mushroomHEADBANGERS 2 years ago
when i try to drug and drop from vista to Backtrack, i cant. but from backtrack to vista it is possible. but, if i try to copy paste, from both directories then it can be done. i was too sleepy yesterday that my brain stuck:D
also about the root and toor, do you know how to change them from the inside to something different?
valcamas 2 years ago
Once you've logged into the desktop you can do the following to create a new user:
- Go to K Menu -> Settings -> System Administration -> User Management
- Click on Administrator Mode (Enter in your current password)
