Just wondering , I see you using a GEM blade to trim leather , there must be a million good trimming knives out there why are you using a gem blade..... habit ?
This Japanese guy doing leatherwork and in particular his cutting method for filagree work , is amazing , check out his Sonic Cutter in action at his youtube channel "mijincokid"
@outbackdigital That guy is a true master of every aspect from his tooing through to the dyeing and construction. And, yes, the filigree too. Makes me wish I had focused on more practice. Thanks for pointing me to his channel. There's tons to watch on there.
@MDVarer Thanks - no need to have a motorcycle - you could make bags for other things. Change the shape a bit, put a shoulder strap on and it could be a camera bag (do they still have those?) or a purse even.
@alzathoth You'll need a cylander arm machine that will sew a minimum of a half inch thickness - remember, few projects require just sewing one layer. There are a lot of machines that say they sew leather, but they're talking about garment leather - a whole different animal. One of the most affordable is Artisan (Google them), but you're still talking well over a grand - closer to two. Good luck
Great video....I am in the process of making one of these, using the measurements you provided....but the sides seem a little to big, how do I know if they are the right size...I want to check before I glue it together and find out they are too large.
@nn8nn It's just thinner leather - it has two purposes, apart from giving a good finished look. It gives you a thicker leather if the outside is thinner and also, the adhesive makes for a moisture proof liner. I think this was 6 oz leather, but if you're using 8oz or more, a liner might make it too thick.
@nn8nn No problem. I'd like to do more vids, but they're kind of a pain in the ass to keep starting and stopping the camera while you're working. Also, since they did away with the old 'Movie Maker' program, I haven't figured out the new version yet - it doesn't look as good as MM.
@Automedon2 haha..totally understand....you could record the whole processing without sound then narrate on it too..im using the old MM, its much better..haha.. you can DLoad them online, find for the xp version
@hcancun Thanks, but I'm not an artist. I keep trying to get better at the technical part, construction, etc, but there are leatherworkers who ARE true artists, and I couldn't hope to touch them - not to say that I don't keep trying. Thanks again.
awesome choice of music. Thanks for sharing. I made a "brooks" style bicycle leather bag for my bike and it's awesome. It's good to have the real thing as a point of comparison so I don't recommend just go and make a bag. The buy the high end stuff and see how they do it.
Hey, thanks a lot. Yes, that tool is very cool. You get the best results if you make a couple of parallel cuts then bevel the inside of each cut (you can use your modelling tool and just run down the inside cut - leather cased of course). It makes a neat channel and keeps your border very straight.
You know what I like, you are down to earth and you show the early designs that you didnt like. I find that every time I make something my technique improves, and you tend to get the designs right after a few stuff ups. Thanks for sharing bro!
@shlappy1 Thanks, but if I could afford an Adler, I'd replace this monster in a heartbeat. It runs on compressed air and is noisy as heck - wanna trade? LOL
That is just GORGEOUS, mate! Absolutely talented you are. I love the all of it. The design, the color. You mention that you dyed it with Fieblings Oil Dye. May I ask what color dye it is? Thank you in advance! Kind regards.
I don't now of anyone who sells small quanitities of leather. Suppliers sell it by the half hide - around 22-25 sq feet. Though, I have seen pieces on Ebay. You'd need to do a seach for -veg tanned leather- Leather is sold by weight per square foot. You need to get 8oz leather.
Great clip and the finished bag looks great. As it is a piece of working kit, have you considered sewing a soft leather flap onto the inside of each gusset and another inside the front of the bagas an aid to keeping dust and dirt out and preventing the smaller items jumping up and out. When the bag is opened the front flap would fold out and the end flaps the same. When you are finished with the tools you automatically flip the ends in and then the front flap.
I have done them that way, but this way there is a half inch overhang, and the flap it tight to the gussets, so things don't come out. Also, the flaps work when the bag is a square shape, but not when the ends are round or oval. I do, of course add weather flaps when I make saddlebags.

@outbackdigital Pretty much habit and also I get them in big quantities so I can always have a sharp edge. I use other knives too though.

@coreywilsey74 Corey, before you glue them you could use clips or clamps to assemble everything to see how everything will work.
