@jakethesnake854 There's actually more keys on this album than there was on Paradise Lost. Nothing compared to Odyssey and those that came before it. Less emphasis on the classical elements, though they are clearly still there. SyX is heavy as shit now, but honestly the formula has not changed much at all. Romeo, Rullo, and Allen dominate the mix. They're still the best at what they do, and have plenty of copycats, I just don't find it all that interesting anymore.

Why should I discuss Dream Theater Vs Symphony X when I can enjoy the both sides. I'd say Dream Theater is sometimes a very weird and hard to digest but at the same time pleasant beast, sometimes too calm, sometimes too wild, you never know how strange things get. Symphony X is most of the times an agressive and wild beast, straight to the point, very imposing like in your face, sometimes calm. Both are old school with classic rock influences, one is more Progy Rock the other more Prog Metal

Lots of extended chords, unusual chord progressions, polyrhythms/polymeters, an unconventional song structure, etc. are the others. The approach to songwriting is very different. THAT is progressive music. Lots of different influences. To say that it has ONLY to do with time signatures is incorrect.

I was not the biggest fan of their last album, Paradise Lost, but holy shit! This album so far is damn amazing! Still doesn't beat "the Odyssey " though. :P

In the end, it is just a matter of taste. I prefer melodic prog metal albums with a few heavier songs (like V and Odyssey albums) than heavier prog metal albums with some melodic parts.

DT and SX are both great bands. They are not in their prime, but they both are extremely talented and write great music. These bands shouldn't be compared. I enjoyed Iconoclast and I am looking forward to the new DT.

This album confirms my worst fears - that Symphony X are continuing to develop the sound they established on Paradise Lost. But I have decided to approach them almost as a different band. Lately, I've been playing Paradise Lost again and it's really grown on me. I might be able to get into this album. Good lord, do I want to - It's Symphony X after all.

I was not the biggest fan of their last album, Paradise Lost, but holy shit! This album so far is damn amazing! Still doesn't beat "the Odyssey " though. :P

i bet some of the people that don't like the new direction of SX probably said during their older albums "i wish they'd do something a little more intense and expand". this is a very good new direction and now we all have the pleasure to listen a whole evolution of Symphony X. bands that have the EXACT same sound for 15+ years get a little tedious

@wsullivan86 At least you agree that SX has changed their direction a little bit. Regarding your argument "Lack of melodic expedition doesn't automatically equate to lower quality", I completly agree with you. My last comment was unfortunate. In the end, it is just a matter of taste. I prefer melodic prog metal albums with a few heavier songs (like V and Odyssey albums) than heavier prog metal albums with some melodic parts.

DT and SX are both great bands. They are not in their prime, but they both are extremely talented and write great music. These bands shouldn't be compared. I enjoyed Iconoclast and I am looking forward to the new DT.

I like more the "new" sound... I'm not such a big fan of neoclassical style, and I prefer MR's riffs to MR's sweeps... Maybe that's for this reason I LOVE The divine wings of tragedy and Paradise Lost more than other albums...
I've bought Iconoclast, and I've found it the natural next step after Paradise Lost... So: I love it :D

This album confirms my worst fears - that Symphony X are continuing to develop the sound they established on Paradise Lost. But I have decided to approach them almost as a different band. Lately, I've been playing Paradise Lost again and it's really grown on me. I might be able to get into this album. Good lord, do I want to - It's Symphony X after all.

This song is not the best, but the rest of the album (especially in the special edition) is fucking amazing! ;)
