Excellent! The sound quality would have been better if the microphones were not so close to the instrument. The reverberation in the room was lost and the was an increase in mechanical noise. But, that doesn't detract from the quality of the performance. Thumbs up!
@BillyRosinet The sound distortions may have come from the recording format. If the audio has benn compressed as mp3, the youtube applet does not handle it well (speaking from experience). It would be nice, if the author would like to consider decompressing the audio component of the source recording before uploading it. This excellent interpretation is worth it, be all means.
@Sylvain894 Bach was a genius, his music is great, and requires much skill and practice to master, there is no such thing as JESUS! dont talk about his music not reaching Jesus' hands because you think his music sounds scary or sad?!!? music may sound sad because its in a minor key and the tone of the organ is edgy, dont confuse sounds and music with emotions, Bach is real, Jesus is not, i hope his sounds frighten you
@witchcraftlord Well during his life, Bach was very criticised for improvisations on organ; his mission on earth was not to fright the listener but to bring people to a new level of faith in god, and novelty by his music. Maybe He was a very pragmatic man; and persecuted too. I think he never found the justice he was looking; like Jesus; his kingdom was not come on earth and hoped for man's belief in something else than mortality. That's what i think, cult for both called sacred(JC)cantatas(JSB
@Sylvain894 I believe in God , but i dont believe in Jesus, im just glad there was a composer like Bach that wrote some much awesome music for organ and harpsichord,
@witchcraftlord I don't impose Jesus, but Bach, to listen his sacred cantatas, had faith in both : Jesus and God; he was lutherian; he wrote ''Jesus, joy of man's desiring'' and many consecrations to Jesus Christ message and mission, like his passions do ! He was not an antichrist and never refers to the devil ! But i admit he did great things for strings and organ, but most of all, religious pieces like his cantatas and never wrote lyrics for opera; his lyrics came from the Lutherian bible !
My music master always sang 'Oh Ebenezer Prout, you are a stupid man; you make all Bach fugues as simple as you can, you make all Bach fugues as simple as you can...' to the first subject of this magnificent piece. Prout was a somewhat arid Victorian pedagogue and sometime editor of Bach editions. Unfortunately, I can't hear this piece now without recalling this irritating rhyme. I hope no one reading this will be similarly blighted in their listening from now on...Sorry.
@crzxr Hah, yes that brings back memories. We used to know it as, " O Ebenezer Prout you are a silly man 'cause you play Bach's fugues as quickly as you can." I seem to remember that Prout made up words for all the fugue subjects from the 48, except this one so some bright spark came up with that. The only one I can remember is, "Uncle Jim has lost his trousers, " which was for BWV549. Like you I can't listen to either piece without the words going through my mind.
Dear Sir, I am Incredibly thankful for you posting this. You have no idea how much this means to me... This made me fall in love with Bach's music, the pipe organ, and contrapuntal pieces. I would never stop listening to this it's just so.. Incredible. You have an amazing talent. I am so grateful... Thank you again.
@robertgift Regarding the alleged "wrong pedal note at 4:00". It doesn't need to be, just a different version. As far as I can remember, the BWV542A fugue, an alternative version (to be found in the respective Peters edition volume), should have this note sequence in pedal.
@Jelonec Oh. Thank you. I memorized the Peters Edition version and do not remember seeing another. The sequence would emulate that earlier played in the manualeft hand.
He hardly moves. I'm told that I am boring by not moving at all. But I must look at the pedals, otherwise I can too easily miss the notes.
I dislike the broken pedal lines and pedal reed from the beginning. Reed in pedal but none in manual?
Also I like pedal notes connected except for phrasing and articulation.
@robertgift I was refering to the alternative version to be found at the back of that Peters volume, the one printed on two staves (I don't have the music right now though). I like this kind of registration. As for broken pedal lines, I don't share your impression, I quite fancy the notes so articulated (Perhaps unlucky is the choice to play the fifth jump in the theme's quavers with one foot only, therefore the gap, but I'm not an expert) The only drawback for me is the sound quality.
@Jelonec Thank you. After posting I remembered that. Loaned my Peters Editions. No idea who has them.
Not a musical line when pedal notes are broken all over the place. I tie everything together and break for articulation and phrasing. Otherwise, with everything broken, there is no articulation and phrasing. Pedal notes connected are a welcome smooth contrast to notes broken in the manuals. Pedal already has one more stop than manuals.(16') Now add a reed on top of that? Un equal.
@Jelonec I was pleased with a stereo cassete recording I made in the 1980's. Loaned, it's gone.
What is difficult about organ is getting fingers assigned and into position so that notes are connected. I have to "finger it out" before learning and practicing it.
Very satisfying when notes are connected. Then you intentionally break other notes for articulation and phrasing. I play the pedal legato except for articulation and phrasing.
The best interpretation of BWV 542 I have ever heard. Personally I am still struggling to find the optimal pedal settings for the "jumpy sections". I see that you prefer being static (non-rotating body) instead of crossing legs (legato approach). Does your strategy lead to more secure pedal work at the end? I see some jumps I would not dare to take, even on my socks...
This is my favorite video of my favorite fugue so far, almost entirely because of how the player's sense of articulation very intuitively honors the style, which in turn serves to illuminate the brilliance of this piece and Bach in general.
I remember playing Chorale and Fugue in High School Symphonic Band. It was an extremely difficult piece to play on the Baritone Horn. Now watching this guy cover all the parts to the song I am just floored!!!! And this guy is playing with his feetOMG!
Rythm is either something you have, or don't have. When you have it, it is second nature. Perfect rythm is even greater than what the ear hears. For instance, you can slow down a little, or speed up (all the while keeping "perfect" rythm). It's a gift.
OMG your feet are moving like crazy! I've just began organlessons, well acctually my teacher didn't show up on my first lesson... but anyway I hope too be that good someday! Very nice! :-)
You can always tell the quality of an organist by how they tackle the phrase in this piece from 1:45 onwards where the pedals and left hand play in semiquavers.
Do it, trust me! This is how I started, by watching lots of organ videos and only after one and a half years I've already learned some great pieces and I'm also playing on some REALLLY big organs. Its the most awesome instrument a human being can ever lay his or her hands on.
Well you need to be a bit adventurous on this one. Go look in nearby churches, preferably the bigger ones, and you should find an organ as well as an organist that is more than willing to teach you. In my case I decided to walk into the big church in my town one morning and only two weeks had passed I asked for lessons and that took me very far.
Go for it, I'm not even a Christian and I was welcomed as a organ student.
Yes it would be a good idea to take some piano before going on the organ, after all it is a very tough instrument to handle but certainly a very fun one too.
Actually there was a time when even Bach knew nothing of music, (although it must have been when he had not yet encountered instruments physically yet).
I agree to both statements. I play tuba, I'm a drummer at Old Fort Niagara (NY), I kinda play piano, and the organ setting on the keyboard and I write music soo... yeah lol
So beautiful. I wish I could learn the organ, but all I've got is a piano. Also, even though I've never heard this before, somehow, it's so nostalgic. In fact, almost all of Bach's works are. I miss being a kid and listening to my mom playing the Prelude and Fugue in C minor from the Well Tempered Clavier I all the time on the piano.
Bravo! Simply wonderful. I was mesmerized. As Mr. Bach would declare, "All glory to God!" Thank you for sharing. Best wishes for your continued advancement and good stewardship.

Hello
I love that piece from Bach but not your interpretation,I know it's a great work to play this play !
The music is not well conducted to my mind. First it's too fast, you must take it slowly and lay the emphasis on conducting the story and make it more baroque !!!
omfg that is rediculous. I will never grasp how anybody can play something with all four limbs so well and complicated. My grandma could do it too and i always thought it was just rediculously amazing. can't even play the regular piano with two hands lol. Bravo!!
That error was tiny. He only got one note wrong out of the entire thing. It's amazing he can play this at all. I certainly can't and this is my favourite fugue of all time.
Fabulosa interpretacion, Aarnoud!!
When you notice an error in someone's playing, does your mind fixate on that error for the remainder of the piece, so you can not enjoy it any longer?
He had a concert last weekend and even than he played bach like bach needs to be played.Truly great when he plays... I often go there 'cause the organ and the players (come to Bethlehem Churche The Hague !)
'Zo hoort Bach gespeeld te worden ', is mijn gedachte, zonder dat ik deze uitspraak kan 'hardmaken '. Het is dan ook een cri-de-coeur; een intuïtief idee: Ja, zo zou de oude Johann Sebastian het zelf gespeeld hebben.
wow, that was great... i play instruments myself, but instruments that require one hand to do one thing while the other does another just makes my mine boggle. And then if I see drummers who have to use both their hands and feet, that just kills me. But even that is nothing compared to organists..... that was amazing!!! best of luck in the future too!
Wonderfully played by aarnoud de groen- I really love this fugue, even though I like Helmuth Walcha´s version better. This piece is the culmination of contrapunctial tecnique and polyphonic harmony - only created by one mastermind - Bach.
The orchestra I am with is playing this and it sounds very, very nice on strings. I thought we were playing it amazing well, but then I remember organists playing it and it always blows me away.. :)
Este tio es de los mejores; yeah!!

The pedal reed is a little too obtrusive. Perhaps from camcorder placement.
The broken pedal notes are distracting. Love phrasing and articulation, but not possible when ALL notes are broken.

Or an English version: Oh Ebenezer Prout, you're getting very stout! As to the performance: magical, and a very gem of an instrument too.

Mind-blasting - Bach's music is one of a kind. Amazing how you pull this off, watching your feet in this piece never gets boring.

ateschio79 3 years ago
I don't see anything wrong with the pedal stops. What did you want it to sound like?

Flawless, love the nice view of the pedals too.

Hello
I love that piece from Bach but not your interpretation,I know it's a great work to play this play !
The music is not well conducted to my mind. First it's too fast, you must take it slowly and lay the emphasis on conducting the story and make it more baroque !!!
pbmineral 3 years ago
You don't get any more baroque that this interpretation.

omfg that is rediculous. I will never grasp how anybody can play something with all four limbs so well and complicated. My grandma could do it too and i always thought it was just rediculously amazing. can't even play the regular piano with two hands lol. Bravo!!

Despite the notice of the error at 4:57, I regard this as a spectacular presentation. I only wish my feet would allow me to try to duplicate it!
aweigand1958 3 years ago
That error was tiny. He only got one note wrong out of the entire thing. It's amazing he can play this at all. I certainly can't and this is my favourite fugue of all time.
jennythemusicmaker 3 years ago
Fabulosa interpretacion, Aarnoud!!

error at 4:57 (just saying though)

When you notice an error in someone's playing, does your mind fixate on that error for the remainder of the piece, so you can not enjoy it any longer?
Markohoppis 3 years ago
The big bang that created the universe was a small error. The little error makes this a divine performance

Graag uitleg!
channele77 3 years ago
channele77 3 years ago
'Zo hoort Bach gespeeld te worden ', is mijn gedachte, zonder dat ik deze uitspraak kan 'hardmaken '. Het is dan ook een cri-de-coeur; een intuïtief idee: Ja, zo zou de oude Johann Sebastian het zelf gespeeld hebben.
Indrukwekkend mooi!
channele77 3 years ago
wow, that was great... i play instruments myself, but instruments that require one hand to do one thing while the other does another just makes my mine boggle.

IMHO the best fugue ever, so complex, the culmination of the counterpoint technique. One of the best pieces of music ever written.

I most definitly and whole-heartedly agree! I can listen to this time and time again, and 'tis just as passionate and each time. Amazing.
