I think he is flying a mission created with the quick mission builder, he puts 4 novice B17, no flying escorts, unlimited damage (there is no way in that game to get out in one piece from a back attack on 4 B17, i tried it a lot only with 1 B17, impossible with realistic settings) and unlimited ammo (maybe, not sure).
He is just getting fun shotting those great monsters.
This is the greatest fly sim in my opinion, and the regular missions are VERY dificult with realistic settings, just try it
@Elgastonable Looks like the formation was pretty loose too. He was basically able to pick off the Forts one by one, when the whole purpose of the combat box was to make sure you COULDN'T do that. There's no way the MK 108 should be scoring hits and be outside the range of the .50's on the Forts. It's ballistics were lousy--purely a short range gun. At close range though, it was a nightmare for the bombers. Gunners had to be novice. Or blind.
@wilmanric1 Yeah, the guy was getting fun, but on this game, if you try it in realistic mode, maybe with luck you will down one B 17, but IF you survive the attack, probably yo will be unable to keep shoting or flying to attack another one.
I say it again, for me is the best fly sim game i have ever played (i still doesnt played the second part: WINGS OF PREY).

if you didnt have unlimited ammo on, you would have wasted all of your ammo in just one of those 600 shot volleys you did on those poor B-17s. But seriously man, you spend like 500 bullets on each B-17. :P it should only take about 1 second burst for good pilot to kill bomber.

Seriously now, it would have been possible for a single 109 to take on four unescorted B17, but the best tactic would have been to dive at almost 700km/h out of the sun, open up with cannon at 200 yards, keep diving until out of range, then repeat the whole thing. This was tried with some success against US bombers over Ploiesti in 1944, but no chance of you downing 4...
All that was going for the Luftwaffe were cartoons like this one. The British, using untested pilots and outnumbered 11:1 in aircraft, beat the living shit so badly out of Goering's big bad air force, it couldn't soften up Britain for an invasion. That caused Hitler to turn east and finally be swallowed up by Soviet and partisan forces. I say the Luftwaffe was 10% effective and 90% hype.

I just looked it up, it would normally take about 25 hits with a 20mm to take down a flying fortress (depending on the pilots aim, but this was supposidly the average.) This gun in the vid is a 30mm round, made of steel not brass so it could punch into the guts of a huge plane like the B-17. The rounds could be armor peircing, high explosive or incideary rounds. What I thought was BS in this vid is not as far as damage, but a formation like that with 5 .50cals in each plane?

I have to correct my comment 3 days ago : Remembering the big Schweinfurt air raid of the 8th USAAF bomber command on Oct 14, 1943 it was possible for Me Bf 109 to shoot down B-17. 60 planes out of 291 were shot down and 121 were damaged seriously.
Anyway, the comments on that vid were right : give onbord weapon with ammo to the B-17 and set difficulty stage to realistic / most difficulty. Probably, you will get 1 B-17 before you were nailed down by B-17 crossfire of tail-gunners.

Only the Me-262 1A-1 had the chance because of the speed, same as Me-163 B "Kraftei" or the He-162 "Volksjäger".
Probably the best B-17 killer would have had been the Gotha Go 229 or so called Horten IX because of the very slim line and high speed - hard to handle for any B-17 onbord gunner.

Yeah i have B-17: flying fortress. Might have to dig that out, been playing Pacific Fighters lately but there are far too many buttons to remember. You need one of them old school things that sits over your key board and tells you all the buttons like i had on my Amiga 1200 lol :P
Try this in birds of prey or wings of prey, put the b-17's on veteran level, limit your ammo and they'll tear you to pieces if you approach from the 6 like that. Or even from similar altitude. You'll need to attack from above, in a curved, slashing motion, at as high speed as possible to prevent their gunners from drawing lead or firing more than 1-second bursts.
This is what happend to b 17s whithout escort, the number of german planes downed by US bombers is ridiculesly exagerated, manytimes 20 or more b 17s where credited for the sme german plane.
IL-2 Pacific fighters has some good effects and infrastructure. BUT, the flight dynamics are just terrible. Compared to the much older Combat Simulator 2 game it's a a turnoff if you're interested in WW2 air warfare.
It depends on what you`re after. As a shooting up game others may be more fun, but CFS2 is f.ex the only one where you can set up historically correct campaigns using the entire world as a theater.
Wasn't the B-17 the only bomber that shot down more enemy planes than were shot down of itself? IIRC, I believe I've heard surviving German pilots say they'd rather face a Mustang, Thunderbolt, Lighting or Spitfire than go up against a B-17.
@Yakko77 I don't blame them, a fighter of that era could only shoot forward, so 1 on 1, you were pretty evenly matched as compared to attacking the B-17, which had no real blind spots. Your best hope against the 17 is a head on attack, try to kill the crew through the glass bubble. Only trouble with that is that it takes some real balls and skills to fly head on at a plane, shoot ACCURATELY, and the get the hell out of the way; most pilots couldn't do it.
@PhatFarm60 nonsense! bombers without escort were sitting ducks. trying to hit a small fighter plane traveling in excess of 300 miles per hour with b17 guns was near impossible. it happened, but not like the movies or video games. In fact day light bombing was nearly called off until the advent of the fighter escort.

The whole exercise is even more futile since boxes of B-17s by no mean flew isolated and each attacked fortress would have been supported by those flying close to it.

Very known fact. In IL-2, B-17´s shot down even more enemy aircraft than any other plain in WW2 if they are controlled by the AI. Including EVERYTHING.

As you are ignorant of history let me fill you in on some things. The USA had been using the foreign policy of Isolationism. Where unlike today we kept our nose out of everyone's business. France and the UK knew Hitler was bad news, but they didn't have popular support for war. See only 20 years before there was a world war. A lot of folks who lived thru that, prolly didn't wanna jump back into war.

@jinto1980 America never used a foreign policy of isolationism. America was sending war supplies to Russia, China & Britain long before its official declaration. American destroyers were attacking German u-boats in 1940 and seeing as how this was done without a formal declaration of war, it was a war crime. The definition of neutral is: "Not taking part or giving assistance". So no, you didn't keep your nose out of everyone's business. All America did was sell arms and then lie about it.

Ah, I see. The B 17 gunners are so paralysed with fear they don't even open fire, and the Germans use inflight rearming.
Seriously now, it would have been possible for a single 109 to take on four unescorted B17, but the best tactic would have been to dive at almost 700km/h out of the sun, open up with cannon at 200 yards, keep diving until out of range, then repeat the whole thing. This was tried with some success against US bombers over Ploiesti in 1944, but no chance of you downing 4...

All that was going for the Luftwaffe were cartoons like this one. The British, using untested pilots and outnumbered 11:1 in aircraft, beat the living shit so badly out of Goering's big bad air force, it couldn't soften up Britain for an invasion. That caused Hitler to turn east and finally be swallowed up by Soviet and partisan forces. I say the Luftwaffe was 10% effective and 90% hype.

They moved bombing from the British airfields to the cities of Britain including London because British bombers in the night bombed German cities. Yes England wanted the Germans to bomb their cities in retribution so that they would take the pressure off of the airfields how inhuman is that?

I just looked it up, it would normally take about 25 hits with a 20mm to take down a flying fortress (depending on the pilots aim, but this was supposidly the average.) This gun in the vid is a 30mm round, made of steel not brass so it could punch into the guts of a huge plane like the B-17. The rounds could be armor peircing, high explosive or incideary rounds. What I thought was BS in this vid is not as far as damage, but a formation like that with 5 .50cals in each plane?

The Anglos and Saxons had lived together for centuries, with English being a western German language. America's only ties to Germany in that respect is that Americans speak a dialect of their language that we got from the English when they ruled us.

I have to correct my comment 3 days ago : Remembering the big Schweinfurt air raid of the 8th USAAF bomber command on Oct 14, 1943 it was possible for Me Bf 109 to shoot down B-17. 60 planes out of 291 were shot down and 121 were damaged seriously.
Anyway, the comments on that vid were right : give onbord weapon with ammo to the B-17 and set difficulty stage to realistic / most difficulty. Probably, you will get 1 B-17 before you were nailed down by B-17 crossfire of tail-gunners.

good video cut, but to be honest - a single Bf-109 even fully armed with maximum numbers of canons mk-108 or mg 151/20 ff never ever was able to shoot down even 1 single B-17 ;-)
Only the Me-262 1A-1 had the chance because of the speed, same as Me-163 B "Kraftei" or the He-162 "Volksjäger".
Probably the best B-17 killer would have had been the Gotha Go 229 or so called Horten IX because of the very slim line and high speed - hard to handle for any B-17 onbord gunner.

Try this in birds of prey or wings of prey, put the b-17's on veteran level, limit your ammo and they'll tear you to pieces if you approach from the 6 like that. Or even from similar altitude. You'll need to attack from above, in a curved, slashing motion, at as high speed as possible to prevent their gunners from drawing lead or firing more than 1-second bursts.

IL-2 Pacific fighters has some good effects and infrastructure. BUT, the flight dynamics are just terrible. Compared to the much older Combat Simulator 2 game it's a a turnoff if you're interested in WW2 air warfare.

Wasn't the B-17 the only bomber that shot down more enemy planes than were shot down of itself? IIRC, I believe I've heard surviving German pilots say they'd rather face a Mustang, Thunderbolt, Lighting or Spitfire than go up against a B-17.

@Yakko77 I don't blame them, a fighter of that era could only shoot forward, so 1 on 1, you were pretty evenly matched as compared to attacking the B-17, which had no real blind spots. Your best hope against the 17 is a head on attack, try to kill the crew through the glass bubble. Only trouble with that is that it takes some real balls and skills to fly head on at a plane, shoot ACCURATELY, and the get the hell out of the way; most pilots couldn't do it.

@PhatFarm60 nonsense! bombers without escort were sitting ducks. trying to hit a small fighter plane traveling in excess of 300 miles per hour with b17 guns was near impossible. it happened, but not like the movies or video games. In fact day light bombing was nearly called off until the advent of the fighter escort.

The whole exercise is even more futile since boxes of B-17s by no mean flew isolated and each attacked fortress would have been supported by those flying close to it.
