To all those that think Wisconsin is better then Michigan State. It's no wonder when all you hear is that abysmal music you play, if you can call it music, to appreciate something different that is actually in tune. Until you learn to take your "intensity" and control it you will always be second class.
@infernowildcat1 wow, you really have no idea what you're talking about. Mike Leckrone writes the music AND charts our moves every week, and he does an amazing job. Everyone who sees us loves our shows because of our ENTERTAINMENT VALUE! All that matters is how much the fans enjoy the show. I would agree that the Penn State Blue Band or the Ohio State Marching Band might sound slightly better at times, but they don't MARCH! They don't have to be in shape. Any nerd can play an instrument.
@lazypanda19 Any nerd can play an instrument? Any SMB member or OSU band member or even MMB member for that matter can not only march with precision, control, and showmanship, but can also produce music that isn't jumpy and shaky-sounding. infernowildcat knows exactly what they are talking about.
@jswartz42 I'm just speaking from experience. Mike Leckrone doesn't have us march this way for no reason. He wants to entertain the crowd, and he definitely succeeds at that. I've been in roll-step bands before, and they honestly are boring. The crowd does not get excited and entertained by a roll-step band nearly as much. Sure, the roll-step precision and musicianship could be phenomenal, but none of that matters if the crowd doesn't pay attention!
@lazypanda19 The OSU band doesn't march? Have you ever SEEN the OSU band?! They and the SMB march better than any college marching band in the country. And as for being in shape, I'd love to see a Wisconsin band member make it through OSU's pregame, or make it through a single day of tryouts.
@aroguelioness LOL you literally make me laugh! I have seen their "script ohio" follow the leader drill, and it looks sooooooooooooo hard... It's like, you don't even have to know where you're going b/c it's just walking wherever the guy in front of you goes. How is that physically challenging? You clearly have never seen the Wisconsin band march a show, or you wouldn't try and make the "OSU is more in-shape" argument which is complete BS. Any OSU nerd would die in one day at Reg Week.
@MagnusLegatus I knew you guys do a great job, but when it comes to actually having to pay attention to how you look on the field, who sees a flip folder? No one. Except for people trying to find reasons to say the Wisconsin Band is bad because they can't find any other flaw. EAT A ROCK!!
@missLC7 We just played them last weekend. They memorized the show. It's not unusual for college bands to use flip folders for the first live run or two of a show since they tend to go through several in a 3 month span.
@ohmygoshAusten Corps style isn't necessarily easier. The drum line has to stay on their toes for a good chunk of the show. What corps style does do is preserve sound quality. the chair stepping makes it extremely difficult to play with any accuracy.
Remember these are college students who have a full workload on top of being in band. And almost none of them are music majors. BFD they have sheet music...the fans don't seem to care at all. It's stupid for other bands to make the members go through the extra work of memorizing music on top of playing the show, especially when you have 4 rehearsals to learn the entire show.
I've seen the OS band. They're good no doubt, but boring. The Script Ohio is one big boring follow the leader.
@demayonnaise OMG it's a follow the leader drill?! Damn it. Why didn't someone tell me this before I spent all that time memorize script counts?! Thanks a lot TBDBITL.
@demayonnaise So what if they are college stubents and have a full workload, what does that have to do with it. There are HBCUs that have to memorize on average 35-45 songs during the season and change their shows approx. week. In my opinion it looks very tacky. Don't get me wrong UW has an outstanding marching band but the carrying of the music on the field...no
It's a different show, both pregame and halftime every week. The sheet music is necessary because the shows are complicated and the marching requires energy, unless anything OSU does. Roll stepping is for a high school band, not a Big 10 marching band. OSU certainly has the playing down perfectly and look clean and crisp, but holy God are they boring to watch. It's like a Toyota: It goes out, does its job and then gets put away until next time with no joy or pleasure derived from it.
The OSU Marching Band learns new music and routines every single week and wouldn't dare carry sheet music out onto the field with them. That's just embarrassing.
@hunterbuddy1 I gotta say Ohio State fans annoy me more than any other fans in the Big Ten. Even Michigan fans don't troll our videos. Dotting of the, 'I' is pretty lame and overrated tradition. We are the only school, as too my knowledge that has a 5th quarter.
OOOOH OOOOH Pick me pick me!!! I know of a marching band that preforms a different pre-game and half-time show every week AND doesn't march with music. Thats right... Ohio State.
