  • golfs are boring and not that fast prefer the megane maybe cos i hae one!!!

  • Ideally, the car you want looks like the Astra, drives like the Meganne and is built like the Golf. But since that doesn't exist, you've got to have the Golf - it's the best compromise. Either that or the Ford Focus.

  • GOLF 5 TDI 4MOTION , GOLF 5 R32

  • the golf is the most beautiful!

  • I've the Astra, very good car

  • They should have thrown the Alfa 147 in there to represent Italy. And yes, I know that car got it's own segment already.

  • good music at 0:42

  • I'll have the Megane

  • 4:40 good music ;)

  • I'd have the Golf.

  • i think a nice golf gti in white and leather seats is the best looking

  • 5:46 Chewbacca sound xD XD XD lol

  • THIS was the Astra that Saturn should have gotten.

  • animal farm reference! :D

  • Jezzas doin a russian accent not a french! lol

  • The astra is by far the best, just look at it, its the fastest, the steeling and understeer let it down, but your going to get that problem putting so much power in a front wheel drive car

  • well done for just typing what Jezza said.

  • thanks, you probably dont even know how to drive or even own a car you poor pikey

  • the pikey comment really made me laugh

but yeah i drive, own my own vehicle and visit tracks as often as time allows

  • which tracks?

  • I think that the Golf is still the best hot hatch only because is a German car.

  • BIG BUM ON MAGANE

  • I think the renault megane is the best. Maybe because I've got one :)

  • lol maybe ur just biased :P

  • epic ending

  • RENAULT FARKI

  • Hey people i have started up a new group on facebook for everyone who loves hot hatchbacks and wish to own one! just search " Hot Hatchbacks Appreciation Group " Thanx!

  • he's got a point about putting some much power into the front wheels, I've got a Comptech Acura CLS and it pulls, really got to grip that steering wheel, Honda needs to start doing rwd.

  • The reno - French bucket

  • the reno is actually spelled renault. -.-

    learn your cars bud

  • this is why i say european cars are over priced and under engineered, a JDM K20 turns out 220HP without the aid of a stupid turbo, ford's focus RS puts more power into the fronts withought that dreadful ubdersteer. these cars would be killed by a NA K20 in a civic or integra, a focus, believe it or not, a cobalt or even a Shitty Racing Technology 4 kids, AKA, SRT4. makes more sence to buy those than thses P.O.S.

  • Renault is fantastic, is the best HHBs in my opinion, the experience is incredible! Congrats Renault for the BestCar! =)

  • its american so it allways break, the vw is the best

  • The Cobalt is NOT a hatchback.

  • yes my friend, yes it would. by a long shot!! fuck a hatch. cobalt ss all the way!

  • Colbat ss is a great car but they were talking about hatchbacks.

  • the best hatch out is the k20a civic si.

  • LOL are u serious...cobalt ss isnt even a hatchback... the back looks like shit and it's got the handling capability of an elephant

  • lol i know i was just joking, i love the gti. but the ur wrong, the cobalt ss has been called the best handling ff car in the world. it decimated every other fwd car on teh nurburgring. fastest fwd ever

  • the world fwd record in nurburgring is the astra opc/vxr-8.35 second in 2005

  • I agree the vw is best, but I would take the R32 model, not the GTI

  • vw rulles not less not more...

  • and its good if you wanna go left....haha

  • I don't think the megane is faster its a fact that it is faster.

  • WTF? the man who knew fuck all more like. The megane is faster than a shitty golf gti I ment wtf r u goin on about u daft twat.

  • lol very coherent sentence there buddy.

All i got out of that was that you think the megane is faster than the golf...

  • Golfs are boring old mans cars. Megane shits all over it.

  • mada88 - I have an old, really old Megane. It's got a small engine and the most sophisticated piece of technology is the £15 CD player I put in it.

But I LOVE IT. It's got fantastic leg room, none of the standard electric luxuries go wrong because...it hasn't got any and the engine bay is HUGE so it's easy to service and fix. You couldn't have better access to the oil filter even if it was sitting in your hand.

As a run around, it's fantastic....according to the 120K on the clock.

  • for me golf had and has a boring design it looks to round for me :\

  • i would have the astra

  • old mans golf cart

  • Golf cant go round corners like the megane

  • lol not a bad review! he highlighted the Astra's problem at the end for a second, its the chassis thats giving it the real problem! i've seen GTI's with over 300hp handle fine (with a little bit of drive train tweaking) but it only works cos the chassis can handle it. The astra's chassis is just too loose and soft imo!

  • i chose the golf in a million years is a amazing car

  • Vauxhall is a Opel with the Steering wheel at the right, Vauxhall is impossible to buy in the rest of the world.

  • The golf better but for the money you cant go wrong with the VXR, the golf will have better residuals, but you can pick up a ex demo 09 plate vxr for £16k now

  • i still like the GTI over the other 2. i have seen the GTI in action my self and i know those cars r no joke they cut corners beautifuly and i dnt know wat that dude was doing when he jumped on to the grass that was hes fault cuz in The hottest hatch videos they still call the GTI king of hatchbacks and in top gear they gave in many rewards so id still have to say the Vw GTI.

  • what you have to remember is that the Golf is more than just a lap time. By all means, they could have supercharged the engine and made it go round the track a couple of seconds faster, but that is avoiding the entire point of having one;

It's Comfort, Practicality, Fuel Economy and Style alone are enough of an attraction to tempt any serious buyer.

  • "that is torque steering the car... and its GOOD if you want to go left" hahaha

  • But can I add, I do dislike Opel...I'l admit the Astra is probably the best car they ever made and definitely on a parr with the Golf! In fact if it was made by any other German company I would buy it myself...oh and davgar02 i'm embarrassed for you I take it 02 is your date of birth

  • Comment removed

  • so basically it all ends up as

1 Golf = good all round

2 Astra = you end up in a ditch (and only as strong as a remapped golf anyway)

3 Megane = well its a renault if you buy it your helping the french!! and they can't do anything right

  • what do you think ? that you cant remap a astra ?

you wont end up in a ditch only if you go around a track more than 2sec faster than the golf, wich is ALLOT

ive driven allot of times in a megane and they are the best handling hatchback cars i have ever driven

golf is just a hype , the renault is plain better , and allot

i dont like the french to , but the germans are verry well know for doing verry bad things

  • Comment removed

  • fcource everyone has his own oppinion on it

but the only nice car (visual) is the astra

ok , golf an megane are not pretty cars , but im only talking about performance in handling on the renault

and thats where a car shines , in handling , noone likes to compete on straight ends with a car that has less than 300HP

for the looks and engine , id go with the astra

for the handling , id go with the megane (wich isnt ugly imo)

i wouldnt buy one out of 3 of those cars myself btw

  • he sounds like Borat: I LIKE THAT VERY MUCH!

  • I hate the new Mk6 Golf GTI bcuz the cool front grills from the Mk5 is gone........

  • i prefer the vw

  • Are Vauxhall and Pontiac made by the same ppl? cuz the Menario looks just like a GTO and the

  • Ok, this might get confusing... Vauxhall and Pontiac are both owned by GM. The GTO/Monaro is manufactured in Australia by Holden, who is also owned by GM. Make sense?

  • Perfect sense. :P

  • Holden Australia made two generations of a much coveted muscle car from 1968 to 1977. It was called the Monaro. A new third generation Monaro was produced by Holden between 2001 and 2005. It was an enormous success.

Since Holden is a subsidiary of GM, the Monaro was exported to the European market under the Vauxhall name and to the American market as the Pontiac GTO. It was also exported to South Africa as the Chevrolet Lumina and in the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe.

  • Whats this got to do with anything?

  • Read it in the context of the thread its part of stupid.

  • please!!! someone tell me whats the name of the song at 4:40???

btw...the astra its a very nice car :)

  • volkswagen GTI '05 best hatchback ever

  • the Vauxhall is the best looking, then the VolksWagen, and last the ugly Renault..

  • Renault Sport , is the best!

  • Oh come on, Manuel Reuter make the record time on Nürburgring that makes Astra VXR/OPC the fastest hot hach. Obviously the FWD is not a problem.

  • I think the astra looks the nicest

  • stuff those cars...i want a 2009 focus rs...with307 bhp ect...

  • Why doesn't saturn get a hint and bring that vxr over to the US? I really like our cobalt ss alot, but I think the astra vxr would be a cool sleeper.

  • renault's back is ugly

  • Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I rather like it.

  • dude just find a civic ek9 o.O

  • or a nice EP3 :)

  • opel would cost you cheaper at the maintaining and for the fuel but a vw is more better than an opel

got to say that my father has an opel astra h with 94 hp, 4 doors and 1.4 liter engine

  • just find a Peugeot 205 GTI, thay are allot more interesting then these cars. :)

  • The Megane seems to be the best. it has a great balance between normal driving, and speed. just dont get the old hot megane. the Mk 1 was utter crap

  • Just get a VW Golf V R32

  • that is a good option, but it is about 20 grand USED!!! a new GTi is only 1 grand more, a Focus ST is only about 500 quid more, even the RS is only 5 grand more, and the Vauxhall is 900 pounds LESS. VW R32=RIPOFF

  • or spend 3,000 US on a beefy C2 turbo on your 2.5 MkV golf and blow all of these cars including the GTI out of the water? sounds like a plan

  • But you'll make them cry... :)

Ive seen some 2.5 twin turbos at Waterfest, crazy.

  • they really are amazing, people dont realize what an amazing piece of hardware VW's 2.5s are

  • you are garbage i hope someone find a gun and kill you with a shot in the center of your fucking head AHAHA OPEL = SHIT

  • vxr anyday my bro gt 1 would run rings around anyhatchbacks and by bthe way the st is wank and megane they cnt get away frm a standars saxo vts till 100!!!

  • vauxhall is shit

  • astra is so crap

  • if you're looking for a hot hatch just get the GTI

  • La Honda Civic Type R è la migliore......................come al solito top gear preferisce le tedesche

  • lol.. Im not even surprised that the Astra won the drag race :D the Vectra OPC did the same with its opponents :D and who the fuck cares about understeer??? I would never be able to take it to a racetrack... I wanna race down BMW-s and Merci-s ,Audis and fuckin ricer Jap-craps , and the Opc Astra is the perfect car to do it with! OPEL 4 LIFE!

  • The golf is the best, i tried an astra and a golf. You must learn to drive a car, and then you can have a true competition.

  • have you tried the Megane?

  • no i didn't, but if i had to chose in the renault cars, i wouldn't chose any car in this kind of...

i think renault is more comfortable, and sometimes cheaper....

  • A standard ST is faster than a civic, easy.

  • And yet, the Focus ST Mountune would piss rings round the lot of them, faster, more economical, more comfortable and more practical.

  • I believe they also test a Focus in another video on youtube.

  • Which video? Do you mean a Mountune, a standard ST or the RS. All 3 of which are brilliant in there own ways. I've got a Mountune and in a strait line at least it has already made mince meat of an audi S3, the old RS, a mini cooper S, a Golf GTi, Mk4 and Mk5 Golf R32, a VXR, a renault clio sport and both the old and new Civic Type R. It isnt the fastest car in the world. I wouldn't even pretend its the best car out of all that i just listed, i just meant that it's the fastest in a drag race.

  • I believe it says Top Gear- Ford Focus ST . It's on the Top Gear playlist, I saw it about 20 minutes ago, skipped over it for this video

  • Oh yea, that one. Jeremy loved it, said he liked it better than the VXR. Also, i dunno if you've read evo mag but it turns out that not only is the mountune faster than the cars i listed there, but it gets to 130 mph quicker than the NEW RS focus, probably more but they ran out of track. Which is very funny when you consider you can get a 2 year old mountune ST3 for half the price, and again, is more economical and more comfortable.

  • git is bets is Germany car

    beste

  • learn to spell you dumb cunt!

  • lol lucky for these 3 mfrs the wrx wagon is not considered a 'hot hatch' because of its 4doors+hatch, else they would all have gone home crying in their pints!! lol

  • so the VW diden't win ha you fucking moron. Ford paid you right ?

  • It did win ! WV the best!

  • R26 is the best!

  • sorry the vauxhall is as boring as a white piece of paper

  • that looks like the Saturn Astra Why is GM changeing the names of there cars

  • ....because Vauxhall isn't a company in the US, GM isn't changing any names, they have the rights to sell that car in the US so they badge it as a Saturn.

  • I was told that GM owns vauxhall is that true.

i went to the vauxhall web site to look at the cars all most all of them look like Buicks or Saturns and Pontiacs.

  • they do, but Vauxhall isn't a brand in the US and Buick/Saturn/Pontiac aren't brands in Europe so they rebadge things.

  • Because Saturn doesn't excists in Europe, and Vauxhall does in the UK. In the rest of Europe it's called Opel.

  • Out of all the hot hatches with 200+bhp today the vauxhall would be my last choice, just knowing how much understeer it had would drive me mad, nippy responsive handling is as important as power in these cars in my opinion.

    1st - Focus ST (facelift)

    2nd - Golf GTi (mk7)

    3rd - Megane Sport 225 (new)

    4th - Astra VXR

The focus offers up the looks and speed of the VXR with decent handling like the Renault and a civilised drive like the Golf, i think it's the best compromise.

  • waait, aren't all of those cars just sensless? Think of any of those, your first choice - Focus for instance. It may be fast, but it's stil a Ford Focus! wouldn't it anoy you that you spend sooo much money on such a car? why not to buy something much better for the same money. I don't know what the prices where you live are, but you'd be albe to afford a 3 or 4-year old BMW, probabely.

  • Not at all, hot hatches are all about people who enjoy a quick drive up a country road but also the comfort of a family car for long journeys, some offer up half the performance of a high market super car yet still having a huge boot, room for the kids, a high safery rating and for near enough pocket money, BMW's are all about class and prestige, brilliant car's but you can get the same if not more performance with Fords and the likes, sure, they arent as well built, but just as good to drive...

  • what about the golf. it's the best car and very affordable.

  • well, doesn't the BMW series 3 give you comfort of a family car for long journeys, room in the boot and the cabin, and waay better handling? rear wheel drive really makes a huge difference. And you're a BMW owner. How does it feel compared to having a Ford, Opel/Vauxhall or VW?

  • Yeh i agree with you there, you don't get the badge but for the same money the BMW would be not be as good in the performance department, if BMW were as good performance wise then it can sometimes add £5,000-£10,000 to the costs which like myself and many others cannot afford. Depends what appeals to you, personally i think £20k for a 220bhp+ good looking , good handling, spacious reliable hot hatch is fantastic.

  • cakey cakes with shoes. cant believe your watching the same vid as me he he

  • hahaha, hello mr J40NYR lol

  • It's an Opel what did you expect?

  • u cant put that much power in a front wheel drive its just crap

  • Focus RS? not crap

  • love my candy white mkv ...VW ftw

  • Jeremy Clarkson is soooooooo sexy for a middle aged man.

  • ermm okay

  • wow

  • My tercel has torque steer -_- I always have to correct the wheel from a stop

  • Oh yeah and vauxhal Fuck Off, rubbish Holden. The original.

  • Try WRX STI a Hsv VXR and a Golf gti r32 if u want a hot hatch back competition

  • he sounds like borat when hes testing the megane! LOL

  • all the type Rs on their japanese versions are the best when it comes to track.

  • Bravo is better

  • do they have no Opels on that goddam island&

  • They are called Vauxhall's over here.

  • Comment removed

  • golf and megan i like much

    like the previouse type r

the new is rubbish even top gear showed it

  • only the europeen version is rubbish the japanese one is amazing well if you want a performance car more focused on the track

  • Ideally, the car you want looks like the Vauxhall, drives like the Renault and is built like the VW. Since you can't have that, buy the Golf - it's the best all round compromise.

  • I totally agree, but i think there is maybe a better compromise still, the Focus ST. It has the Good bits of all 3, power, fun, build and looks without the drawbacks, build quality, blandness, handling. The focus offers up all the thrills without the spills :)

  • Focus ST is a very nice car, and the new RS is fantastic as well. But there's a new Mk VI GTI coming, which looks pretty impressive. Will the Focus still be King of the Hatchbacks? Watch this space...

  • the RS is not the king of hatchbacks ,well dunno if you are talking about performance a mere megane R26R is way faster on a track anyway the golf VI GTI is out , but the ultimate version is not out it Code name Golf R20 with 270HP with thr same 2L Tfsi

  • I wasn't just talking about performance. OK, the Megane R26R is quicker on a track, but it doesn't have any luxuries, it only has 2 seats, and it doesn't have a boot. The idea of a hot hatchback is that it's fast and practical - the Focus and Golf are, the megane R26R just does speed.

  • that is way i said you should precise in term of what for me the old golf markV GTI still the best overall (the golf is more sober , better quality and well built than the RS )

  • where is the golf r20?

  • like i ve mentioned before is not out yet it will be soon probably for the next year , it is the replacement of the current R32 but instead of having the 3.2l V6 it will have the same 2L from the GTI more precisely from the S3 with a little boost to have 270HP

  • its not out yet -_- the r20 is due to launch in september and october, this is old, a few years back, i dont think the vw r32 was introduced back then

  • nvm the r32 was already introduced, but im sure the r20 is being introduced at some autoshow next year

  • We'll see.. i don't think it's performance this car is missing, it's prescence, it definitely deliver's from behind the wheel and also living with on a day to day basis but if it was sat in the car park next to someone's bright orange ST or arden blue VXR you would be left feeling a tad jealous.. i would anyway.

  • I understand what you mean, but every time I see a VXR or ST I can't help but think "gads". Too loud, brash and 'look at me'. Somehow the Renault and the Golf are more understated - if that's what you want.

  • Yeh that's also true, depends how you look at it and also what you find appealing. I'm at the tender age of 20 still so a bright orange ST is right up my street but if i was say 40 or so i'd probably be looking at the more civlized golf's. Still, i prefer the overall package on the Focus and it doesn't have to be bright orange, what about blue or black.. it'd be a tough choice as i am a Ford man but the Golf would definetely be my second choice, then the renault etc...

  • mazdaspeed 3> all hatches

  • Viva VW! ♥♥

  • I dont like the new Mk5 gti I like the mk4

  • The only one you can even buy in N. America is the GTI. The Astra is here as a Saturn but 2 things: Saturn just got sold to Rodger Penske and #2: You can't get a turbo'ed 2.0.. the Astra Redline was supposed to come over, but who knows anymore? As far as this review's concerned, the GTI would be a more fun car. Plus I'm possibly buying one.. so who knows.

  • how do we actually reduce tat torque steer on tat astra vxr? put in a LSD? detuned the engine?

  • haha, 6:49

  • hey, my uncle has that ferrari

  • can nebody tell abt the background music at the time of Megane's entry?????
