Ideally, the car you want looks like the Astra, drives like the Meganne and is built like the Golf. But since that doesn't exist, you've got to have the Golf - it's the best compromise. Either that or the Ford Focus.
The astra is by far the best, just look at it, its the fastest, the steeling and understeer let it down, but your going to get that problem putting so much power in a front wheel drive car
Hey people i have started up a new group on facebook for everyone who loves hot hatchbacks and wish to own one! just search " Hot Hatchbacks Appreciation Group " Thanx!
he's got a point about putting some much power into the front wheels, I've got a Comptech Acura CLS and it pulls, really got to grip that steering wheel, Honda needs to start doing rwd.
this is why i say european cars are over priced and under engineered, a JDM K20 turns out 220HP without the aid of a stupid turbo, ford's focus RS puts more power into the fronts withought that dreadful ubdersteer. these cars would be killed by a NA K20 in a civic or integra, a focus, believe it or not, a cobalt or even a Shitty Racing Technology 4 kids, AKA, SRT4. makes more sence to buy those than thses P.O.S.
lol i know i was just joking, i love the gti. but the ur wrong, the cobalt ss has been called the best handling ff car in the world. it decimated every other fwd car on teh nurburgring. fastest fwd ever
mada88 - I have an old, really old Megane. It's got a small engine and the most sophisticated piece of technology is the £15 CD player I put in it.
But I LOVE IT. It's got fantastic leg room, none of the standard electric luxuries go wrong because...it hasn't got any and the engine bay is HUGE so it's easy to service and fix. You couldn't have better access to the oil filter even if it was sitting in your hand.
As a run around, it's fantastic....according to the 120K on the clock.
lol not a bad review! he highlighted the Astra's problem at the end for a second, its the chassis thats giving it the real problem! i've seen GTI's with over 300hp handle fine (with a little bit of drive train tweaking) but it only works cos the chassis can handle it. The astra's chassis is just too loose and soft imo!
The golf better but for the money you cant go wrong with the VXR, the golf will have better residuals, but you can pick up a ex demo 09 plate vxr for £16k now
i still like the GTI over the other 2. i have seen the GTI in action my self and i know those cars r no joke they cut corners beautifuly and i dnt know wat that dude was doing when he jumped on to the grass that was hes fault cuz in The hottest hatch videos they still call the GTI king of hatchbacks and in top gear they gave in many rewards so id still have to say the Vw GTI.

Ok, this might get confusing... Vauxhall and Pontiac are both owned by GM. The GTO/Monaro is manufactured in Australia by Holden, who is also owned by GM. Make sense?
Holden Australia made two generations of a much coveted muscle car from 1968 to 1977. It was called the Monaro. A new third generation Monaro was produced by Holden between 2001 and 2005. It was an enormous success.
Since Holden is a subsidiary of GM, the Monaro was exported to the European market under the Vauxhall name and to the American market as the Pontiac GTO. It was also exported to South Africa as the Chevrolet Lumina and in the Middle East as the Chevrolet Lumina Coupe.
that is a good option, but it is about 20 grand USED!!! a new GTi is only 1 grand more, a Focus ST is only about 500 quid more, even the RS is only 5 grand more, and the Vauxhall is 900 pounds LESS. VW R32=RIPOFF
vxr anyday my bro gt 1 would run rings around anyhatchbacks and by bthe way the st is wank and megane they cnt get away frm a standars saxo vts till 100!!!
lol.. Im not even surprised that the Astra won the drag race :D the Vectra OPC did the same with its opponents :D and who the fuck cares about understeer??? I would never be able to take it to a racetrack... I wanna race down BMW-s and Merci-s ,Audis and fuckin ricer Jap-craps , and the Opc Astra is the perfect car to do it with! OPEL 4 LIFE!
Which video? Do you mean a Mountune, a standard ST or the RS. All 3 of which are brilliant in there own ways. I've got a Mountune and in a strait line at least it has already made mince meat of an audi S3, the old RS, a mini cooper S, a Golf GTi, Mk4 and Mk5 Golf R32, a VXR, a renault clio sport and both the old and new Civic Type R. It isnt the fastest car in the world. I wouldn't even pretend its the best car out of all that i just listed, i just meant that it's the fastest in a drag race.
Oh yea, that one. Jeremy loved it, said he liked it better than the VXR. Also, i dunno if you've read evo mag but it turns out that not only is the mountune faster than the cars i listed there, but it gets to 130 mph quicker than the NEW RS focus, probably more but they ran out of track. Which is very funny when you consider you can get a 2 year old mountune ST3 for half the price, and again, is more economical and more comfortable.
lol lucky for these 3 mfrs the wrx wagon is not considered a 'hot hatch' because of its 4doors+hatch, else they would all have gone home crying in their pints!! lol
....because Vauxhall isn't a company in the US, GM isn't changing any names, they have the rights to sell that car in the US so they badge it as a Saturn.
Out of all the hot hatches with 200+bhp today the vauxhall would be my last choice, just knowing how much understeer it had would drive me mad, nippy responsive handling is as important as power in these cars in my opinion.
1st - Focus ST (facelift)
2nd - Golf GTi (mk7)
3rd - Megane Sport 225 (new)
4th - Astra VXR
The focus offers up the looks and speed of the VXR with decent handling like the Renault and a civilised drive like the Golf, i think it's the best compromise.
waait, aren't all of those cars just sensless? Think of any of those, your first choice - Focus for instance. It may be fast, but it's stil a Ford Focus! wouldn't it anoy you that you spend sooo much money on such a car? why not to buy something much better for the same money. I don't know what the prices where you live are, but you'd be albe to afford a 3 or 4-year old BMW, probabely.
Not at all, hot hatches are all about people who enjoy a quick drive up a country road but also the comfort of a family car for long journeys, some offer up half the performance of a high market super car yet still having a huge boot, room for the kids, a high safery rating and for near enough pocket money, BMW's are all about class and prestige, brilliant car's but you can get the same if not more performance with Fords and the likes, sure, they arent as well built, but just as good to drive...
well, doesn't the BMW series 3 give you comfort of a family car for long journeys, room in the boot and the cabin, and waay better handling? rear wheel drive really makes a huge difference. And you're a BMW owner. How does it feel compared to having a Ford, Opel/Vauxhall or VW?
Yeh i agree with you there, you don't get the badge but for the same money the BMW would be not be as good in the performance department, if BMW were as good performance wise then it can sometimes add £5,000-£10,000 to the costs which like myself and many others cannot afford. Depends what appeals to you, personally i think £20k for a 220bhp+ good looking , good handling, spacious reliable hot hatch is fantastic.
Ideally, the car you want looks like the Vauxhall, drives like the Renault and is built like the VW. Since you can't have that, buy the Golf - it's the best all round compromise.
I totally agree, but i think there is maybe a better compromise still, the Focus ST. It has the Good bits of all 3, power, fun, build and looks without the drawbacks, build quality, blandness, handling. The focus offers up all the thrills without the spills :)
Focus ST is a very nice car, and the new RS is fantastic as well. But there's a new Mk VI GTI coming, which looks pretty impressive. Will the Focus still be King of the Hatchbacks? Watch this space...
the RS is not the king of hatchbacks ,well dunno if you are talking about performance a mere megane R26R is way faster on a track anyway the golf VI GTI is out , but the ultimate version is not out it Code name Golf R20 with 270HP with thr same 2L Tfsi
I wasn't just talking about performance. OK, the Megane R26R is quicker on a track, but it doesn't have any luxuries, it only has 2 seats, and it doesn't have a boot. The idea of a hot hatchback is that it's fast and practical - the Focus and Golf are, the megane R26R just does speed.
that is way i said you should precise in term of what for me the old golf markV GTI still the best overall (the golf is more sober , better quality and well built than the RS )
like i ve mentioned before is not out yet it will be soon probably for the next year , it is the replacement of the current R32 but instead of having the 3.2l V6 it will have the same 2L from the GTI more precisely from the S3 with a little boost to have 270HP
its not out yet -_- the r20 is due to launch in september and october, this is old, a few years back, i dont think the vw r32 was introduced back then
We'll see.. i don't think it's performance this car is missing, it's prescence, it definitely deliver's from behind the wheel and also living with on a day to day basis but if it was sat in the car park next to someone's bright orange ST or arden blue VXR you would be left feeling a tad jealous.. i would anyway.
I understand what you mean, but every time I see a VXR or ST I can't help but think "gads". Too loud, brash and 'look at me'. Somehow the Renault and the Golf are more understated - if that's what you want.
Yeh that's also true, depends how you look at it and also what you find appealing. I'm at the tender age of 20 still so a bright orange ST is right up my street but if i was say 40 or so i'd probably be looking at the more civlized golf's. Still, i prefer the overall package on the Focus and it doesn't have to be bright orange, what about blue or black.. it'd be a tough choice as i am a Ford man but the Golf would definetely be my second choice, then the renault etc...
The only one you can even buy in N. America is the GTI. The Astra is here as a Saturn but 2 things: Saturn just got sold to Rodger Penske and #2: You can't get a turbo'ed 2.0.. the Astra Redline was supposed to come over, but who knows anymore? As far as this review's concerned, the GTI would be a more fun car. Plus I'm possibly buying one.. so who knows.
golfs are boring and not that fast prefer the megane maybe cos i hae one!!!

Because Saturn doesn't excists in Europe, and Vauxhall does in the UK. In the rest of Europe it's called Opel.

RSTdave88 2 years ago
waait, aren't all of those cars just sensless? Think of any of those, your first choice - Focus for instance. It may be fast, but it's stil a Ford Focus! wouldn't it anoy you that you spend sooo much money on such a car? why not to buy something much better for the same money. I don't know what the prices where you live are, but you'd be albe to afford a 3 or 4-year old BMW, probabely.
WatchingMamut 2 years ago
Not at all, hot hatches are all about people who enjoy a quick drive up a country road but also the comfort of a family car for long journeys, some offer up half the performance of a high market super car yet still having a huge boot, room for the kids, a high safery rating and for near enough pocket money, BMW's are all about class and prestige, brilliant car's but you can get the same if not more performance with Fords and the likes, sure, they arent as well built, but just as good to drive...
RSTdave88 2 years ago
what about the golf. it's the best car and very affordable.
driftnut56 2 years ago 4
well, doesn't the BMW series 3 give you comfort of a family car for long journeys, room in the boot and the cabin, and waay better handling? rear wheel drive really makes a huge difference. And you're a BMW owner. How does it feel compared to having a Ford, Opel/Vauxhall or VW?
WatchingMamut 2 years ago
Yeh i agree with you there, you don't get the badge but for the same money the BMW would be not be as good in the performance department, if BMW were as good performance wise then it can sometimes add £5,000-£10,000 to the costs which like myself and many others cannot afford. Depends what appeals to you, personally i think £20k for a 220bhp+ good looking , good handling, spacious reliable hot hatch is fantastic.

the new is rubbish even top gear showed it
Ouwtlawzzz 2 years ago
only the europeen version is rubbish the japanese one is amazing well if you want a performance car more focused on the track
InitialDAmine 2 years ago
Ideally, the car you want looks like the Vauxhall, drives like the Renault and is built like the VW. Since you can't have that, buy the Golf - it's the best all round compromise.
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
I totally agree, but i think there is maybe a better compromise still, the Focus ST. It has the Good bits of all 3, power, fun, build and looks without the drawbacks, build quality, blandness, handling. The focus offers up all the thrills without the spills :)
RSTdave88 2 years ago
Focus ST is a very nice car, and the new RS is fantastic as well. But there's a new Mk VI GTI coming, which looks pretty impressive. Will the Focus still be King of the Hatchbacks? Watch this space...
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
the RS is not the king of hatchbacks ,well dunno if you are talking about performance a mere megane R26R is way faster on a track anyway the golf VI GTI is out , but the ultimate version is not out it Code name Golf R20 with 270HP with thr same 2L Tfsi
InitialDAmine 2 years ago
I wasn't just talking about performance. OK, the Megane R26R is quicker on a track, but it doesn't have any luxuries, it only has 2 seats, and it doesn't have a boot. The idea of a hot hatchback is that it's fast and practical - the Focus and Golf are, the megane R26R just does speed.
NobleM15fan 2 years ago
that is way i said you should precise in term of what for me the old golf markV GTI still the best overall (the golf is more sober , better quality and well built than the RS )
InitialDAmine 2 years ago
where is the golf r20?
yourfast07 2 years ago
like i ve mentioned before is not out yet it will be soon probably for the next year , it is the replacement of the current R32 but instead of having the 3.2l V6 it will have the same 2L from the GTI more precisely from the S3 with a little boost to have 270HP
InitialDAmine 2 years ago
its not out yet -_- the r20 is due to launch in september and october, this is old, a few years back, i dont think the vw r32 was introduced back then
Caseybat94 2 years ago
nvm the r32 was already introduced, but im sure the r20 is being introduced at some autoshow next year
Caseybat94 2 years ago
We'll see.. i don't think it's performance this car is missing, it's prescence, it definitely deliver's from behind the wheel and also living with on a day to day basis but if it was sat in the car park next to someone's bright orange ST or arden blue VXR you would be left feeling a tad jealous.. i would anyway.
RSTdave88 2 years ago
I understand what you mean, but every time I see a VXR or ST I can't help but think "gads". Too loud, brash and 'look at me'. Somehow the Renault and the Golf are more understated - if that's what you want.
theberengersniper 2 years ago
