  • Cotton Eye Joe is classic. Even though I like the Rednex version. This one with The Chieftains and Ricky Skaggs is my favorite. I think Cotton Eye Joe sound better when its Acoustic than Techno.

  • Just GREAT! Thats just good musik and i like this. 100%

  • most irish traditional music is borrowed from scotland and england but there is no doubt the irish music was brought to the applachians where bluegrass developed . and american step dancing and tap dancing came from irish dancing

  • @jacquesbrelfan I'm Irish and a musician. Most bluegrass is based on Irish and Scots tunes. english influence on Irish music is minimal except for some folk songs as we had our own language which avoided British influece especially in the west of the country. Commonly known bluegrass tunes have their Irish counterparts..usually with different names. Scotland was originally invaded by Celtic tribes from Ireland that founded a kingdon called "Dal Riada" in the Scottish west.

  • perfect example of great music that does NOT require electricity!!

  • I believe the Chieftains are Irish.

  • @dcconsi Chieftains

  • Each time I watch this video I am just so proud of all of these fantastically talented musicians. Ricky is one heck of an instrumentalist and I love to hear him on the mandolin especially. All of the dancers are fabulous - it makes me tired just watching all that energy. The two fiddle players at the end are terrific with their dancing. How wonderful to be able to enjoy such a great video as this is. Thanks again. - Paula

  • As far as I am concerned you can't go wrong pairing Ricky or the Chieftains with just about any artist and achieving awesome results. However, pairing this amazing group of musicians the results far exceed awesome - they are just outstanding!

  • @MissEmilyKat that is so true !! brilliant music here i love this song !!!

  • Ricky Nelson sings a version of this song in the John Wayne movie Rio Bravo. This is an excellent blend of traditional music from both sides of the Atlantic.

  • WONDERFUL! WONDERFUL! AWESOME!!!

  • We saw the Chieftains Saturday afternoon 3/13/10 (2.5 days ago) in Philadelphia, PA. you'll note at 4:21 the fiddler in the blue shirt rises and then step dances. he/they did the same Saturday, dancing several times. they're brothers. they did Cotton-Eyed Joe on Saturday. great show!

  • those dancers are very well known- Pilatzke brothers from Canada. Considered to be the best in Ottowa Valley Step Dancing. They are fantastic!

  • @lauraneville Thanks for posting their names. The program handout just said "Chieftains & friends" so I didn't get their names.

  • Each time I watch this video I am just awestruck at the huge talent among Ricky, all the musicians, the dancers and just plain old great music. It's such a happy sound and I wish I had been there when this show was put on. I used to clog but I could never have made it to the level all of these dancers have - the two guys at the end are just too fine. The Chieftains have accompanied many an artist and they are wonderful. Thanks again for posting this winner. - Paula

  • mandolin

  • Sorry folks NOT the English influence BUT Scots and Irish. US country/bluegrass has it's roots in Ireland and Scotland NOT England.

  • Comment removed

  • Country/Blue grass/traditional music? It all has it's routes in the English/ Scots/Irish/Ulster/French migration to the US from the 17th century onwards. The English and Scots/Irish were the original migrants fleeing Britain because of religious persecution and they brought all their musical influences. Some of this blended with the French influence and thus you had Cajan but most of the Grand Ole Oprey and US country music has it's roots in Scots/Irish.

  • Try to sit still while listening to this it is impossible.Love it !!!

  • Fantastic! If that doesn't put a big smile on your face...gotta check the pulse. Love it.

  • great tune

  • frickin FUN.... i'm sitting at my computer on a cold rainy day, grinning from ear to ear... perfect.

    it's so cool XD

  • now that's a party!!

  • wow great job ricky youre the greatest love the band to and the dancers trerific

  • This is just awesome - best piece of video I've seen in along time. I've both those tunes on my iPod, though not together like this.

These guys are having so much fun even as they perform!!!

  • Now that is fun!! Makes me want to join right in. Uplifting, simple and real "people" music.

  • Not sure that any "sean nos" dancers of old could have matched anything like that!!!

Awesome stuff - these guys are just having a ball even as they perform!!!

  • Nice bit of Sean Nós dancing there at the end

  • This is a great song...Bluegrass is the best...!!!!!!!!!

  • Wow - I try to start off each day with this terrific music here. It sure lifts me up and gets me going. Ricky is wonderful as always and I can't say enough great things about this wonderful band, which is, to me, basically a full orchestra. Both sides of my family are Irish but I've always felt all music like this is a huge combination of many cultures. We met some bagpipers at our American Legion Post last year and what a treat it was when they played a couple of songs for us. - Paula

  • son of a bitch :) it s damn good :P

  • I've always been proud of my Hillbilly AND Scotch-Irish Heritage! I belong to the McCullah's of clan MacCulloch.

  • What genre of country music is this?

  • Welcome to the world of Bluegrass. It isn't country music in the modern definition of that pop filled drivel.

  • Yes but the Chieftains are Irish Traditional folk, so its a blend!

  • I ask,, But insn't all North American Country music and a bit of Rock music originally derived from Irish and Scottish rythums brought here by many a early immigrant via the Coffin ships if not before ???! Sorry for spelling!:)

  • There must be Irish blood in every family in the world!! So up us Paddy's!! We get around lads!!

  • Celtic blood travels well !

  • saw them live yesterday! they were amazing! tapdancers too!!!! Really , couldn't stand still!

And suddenly 20 guys with bagpipes and in uniform came on the stage to bring together with the chieftains a march song! realy! amazing guys!

  • Our folks (the Walkers) from Scotland settled Cumberland Gap and Tazwell. The term as we understood it was popularized by Hollywood! WE never called ourselves "billys' or hillbillys.

We were folks to each other!

  • well said pluckinpick,

    folk is where its at!

  • haha Cotton Eye Joe in the middel xD GO GO REDNEX!!!! WOOOOO :P

  • This kind of music just makes you wanna get up and dance. Ricky Skaggs is amazing!

  • Great!!!!

  • I've been a C/W Bluegrass Riverdance fan for years and each one, in it's own right is great. This combination of the three is absolutely spectacular. Talk about toe tapping music and music that will get everybody up dancing... if this piece doesn't do it, nothing will. Great stuff and thanks for posting

  • No other kind of music can match the incredibly positive energy exibited here. This is family music.

  • @jteran29 Well said! ;)

  • I've posted previously about this wonderful video but now I want to applaud the two fellows dancing here who are fantastic. We have a live show here in our area every Saturday night and a number of dancers take the stage and really go to town. It amazes me that so much energy and talent like these two young guys have are in addition to their terrific fiddling. It doesn't get any better than this. Thank you again. - Paula

  • I want to be able to do everything this video does.

  • If this doesn't get your toes tapping you must be dead.

  • The word 'Hillbilly' was first used in Ireland (1600s) by the Catholic Irish to refer to the Protestants in the north-Ulster.'Billy' is a reference to King William of Orange whom the Protestants revered.

  • Comment removed

  • The term Hillbilly did not originate with the Roman Catholics in Ireland, it had it's origin in Appalachians. It is a mixture of two words hill and billy. The latter being a Scottish friendly colloquilism for fellow. The USA equilivent would probably be guy. The hillbillies were simply guys from the hills.

  • I heard many different things;'Billy' being a reference to Billy goat and the ''Hill' part obviously referring to the appalachians.

My source was a Scottish website.I believe there are British documents from the period-1600s-where the terms 'Cracker' and 'Hillbilly' appear in reference to the Irish Presberterians.

  • The term Billy is still in use by the older generation over here both in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Check out "Hillbilly" in Oxford Dictionary. Wikipedia might also help.

  • Thanks,Daddy.

If you're as interested in this topic as I am read Grady McWhiney's 'Cracker Culture' and Sen.James Webb's 'Born Fighting'.

  • Wow - it doesn't get any better than this! I got goosebumps just watching this fabulous video and listening to Ricky and The Chieftains and watching all the dancers. I've done some clogging in the past but couldn't keep up with these here. So many wonderful musicians here and these old songs are timeless and always great to hear over and over. I've watched all the videos with The Chieftains and the artists who have worked with them are very blessed. Thanks so much for posting - Paula

God Bless Ireland and Scotland for bringing

    their music to America.

Thank you Ireland for giving us our grass roots here in america. excellent singing, excellent dancing and wonderful musicians! thank you Ya made my day!

  • Magic !!!!

  • Yeehaw! Love it!

  • Whew! What a show - wow, the great singing by Ricky, the musicians, and the dancing are awesome. I had to get up and dance to this myself - couldn't keep up with them of course. Cotton Eyed Joe is practically a standard here at Renfro Valley each weekend and when the square dancers show up it's terrific. I do love the Chieftans - first heard and saw them in a video with Martina McBride's singing "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight". Super talented band. Thanks for posting-it made my day - Paula

  • I have never met a celebrity as open and friendly as Ricky Skaggs (Nashville 1996). I loved his music before that but since meeting him, I'm a fan for life!! This guy is one of nature's gentlemen and a brilliant performer!!

  • Unlike so many "stars," I always thought Ricky would be a real geniune down-to-earth person. How cool that you could meet him! I love his music too and I think he's one of the most underrated string players in all of music.

  • This is how you do it. Thanks for posting. Had never heard Skaggs before. May have to check him out. I highly recommend seeing the Chieftains if you get the chance.

  • The dancers at the end are Jon and Nathan Pilatzke.

You're right, Jon is also a fiddler.

If you like them, you should check out videos of their other bands: Quagmyre, Tread, and the Stepcrew!

  • The dancers at the end--weren't those guys from the band? Looked like the guy in the blue shirt was one of the fiddlers earlier.

  • Good music!

  • This is AWESOME!! The only other time I've ever heard this song was in the movie "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne and Dean Martin. They sang it in the jail.

  • I love this song! Wouldn't it be a treat to have both Dino & Ricky sing this together?

  • that it would! I once saw a documentary on the Chieftans and they were playing with Los Lonely Boys. It was AWESOME!

  • Just awesome, amazing . TRUE ARTIST

  • This is a folk song not country

  • just WONDERFUL..... so beautiful,thank's !

  • this is just fucking brilliance.....amazing.....

  • Fair play to Paddy Maloney and his chieftens makes this tune great again,

  • the song is cindy

  • Awesomeeee!What song is this?

  • excellent!

  • Thankyou... thankyou... for this vid. One of the best I've ever seen.

  • Rickey Scaggs is a (If not the) true Country artist. He aint no hat act. God bless him and Levon Helm and the musicians of their ilk for keeping REAL country music alive.

  • Ricky Skaggs with Bruce Hornsby, and the Levon Helm Band were both at Merlefest in April. You should check out that festival if you like this music. The Cheiftains were there with Ricky Skaggs, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Vassar Clements, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Tony Rice and a whole bunch of people 4 years ago. It was one of the best shows of my life!

  • This song is also in a John Wayne movie, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sing it.

  • wow!my goodness!

  • If you ever get to a Texas dance hall outside of the big cities you will hear this version of the Cotton-Eyed Joe at least once every night. It is THE standard version - not that studio-produced, exercise/line dance version by the Swedish eurodance "band," Rednex.

  • Who did audio on this?

  • had no idea ricky did only the mandolin... tho it is impressive... thot he did more. Still impressed with his music.

  • Ricky can play guitar, fiddle, and mandolin, but plays oly the mandolin in this particular performance.

  • that was awsome!

  • Wow, having been a clog dancer and flatfooter for years, I came up on old-time music and bluegrass that sounded like this..Love this stuff..The newer stuff leaves me cold, as it just doesn't have the same feelings or energy as this stuff does..Love the two tunes, the dancers, the band..Have to agree with you Dailywail, about the ladies in this video..All are great dancers, cute, and great legs to boot, having fun and looking good doing it..Thanks for posting this..

  • A lot of people don't know it, but the mountain clogging is largely the result of the Celtic influence of Irish stepdancing. The Irish, Scots, and Welsh settled heavily inot the Appalchian Mountains. I have some Scots-Irish blood in my family bloodline.

  • yeah, alot of us do..My mothers side is Scots-Irish..What I find amazing is that everyone thinks all the Irish came through either Boston or NY, but many came through Maryland, the Cumberland Gap, and into Appalachia, which is what my ancestors did..
