I'm personally not musically inclined, but I hope that when I have children, that one of them can play like Tori. Maybe that's weird, but I don't care!
I am American and she indeed is my favourite however - I find myself often scratching my head as she spurts out her metaphoric riddles and rhymes left to self deciphering haha! Gotta love her!
Are you an idiot? Not understanding what metaphor is? Are you an "American" first before you a free thinker, human being? You must scratch your head often!
tori, the voice of sauron. the raped girl from baltimore who cherishes her bitterness like a fine wine. gw is raping the earth. whatever. this girl has so many demons in her that she can attack you like the little girl in effen lied with her spiritual arms with malice and glee.
ALL Australian interviewers in media are like this I'm afraid. I am an australian and they are cynical and are looking for problems non-stop. They are in a daydream and looking to suit their self-image, that they have no problems its everybody else. It is transparent but unfortunatly they don't give a rats... Tori is a lovely lady!
Tori is incredibly inspiring on so many levels....her courage to stand in her creative expression & fully be that is amazing, & I agree that the way the reporter portrayed her "channelling" of her work & her connection with the Goddesses was ignorant & derogatory. She is coming from a spiritual place in her work - it is so Australian to cut that down. Something that doesn't connect for me is what appears to be an obsession with her image nowadays ALWAYS made up in make-up & high fashion.
The reporter was really disrespectful, not directly to Tori, but in her commentary. Saying that she "believe her songs come from Greek muses," or that "it gets a little out there." She's not even focusing on the messages, she's not thinking the way a musician would think, she's being judgemental and ignorant.
This is actually the most lucid sounding Tori interview that I have EVER seen. Maybe it's because it's Australian and I'm Australian and so maybe it has been edited by someone who has a similar kind of thought pattern to me??? Usually I end up feeling "hmmm..." after hearing Tori, and I think why can't she speak plain English? And i consider myself to be really open to alternative thought. So anyway. Thanks for posting.
there's nothing "out there" about songs writing themselves. the idea that one channels rather than creates has been described by lots of great writers of music and literature.
I adore what she said about not labeling people that listen to her as "fans"! I've actually never ehard anyone say that before and never seen it that way myself, either...I don't necessarily think it's a derogatory term, but I love the fact that she sees each person for who they are as individuals and people. She's...amazing.
That kind of threw me back to. It was like a philosophical blind side. You've always noticed what she was describing, but you cant help but see her as a celebrity vs. some chick who sings at a piano.
I'm 14 and just getting into Tori, shamefully. But my god, she speaks far more sense than most people who try and preach/teach me, and at this age that is a lot. Thank 'god' for the artists like her. With out them it would be difficult to learn anything that matters.
cool that you are open to her music. when i was 14 i would have tuned out to her completely. she is up there as far as being a creator/artist. don't be ashamed. i felt the same about joni mitchell - showing my age - but tori is a true artist in a business that is more about sales than soul
Tori's a legend, as is Joni! Both have written some of the most influential and necessary music of our time, and I'm only 14 too so it shows its shining through! As a musician myself people like Tori are a big influence, not only musically but becaus they speak such wisdom.
it's all relative, really... and what people belive as real are real in their consequences. she looks like a nutcase only if you allow them to paint her portrait in that light... looking at it differently often yeilds an alternative perspective.
The woman interviewing looks absolutely stunning!

And another thing:
In empiric terms, believing some entity operates through you is just as "out there" as believing god operates through you.
So what's the big deal?

At least, one of them gets it. There is hope.

I don't understand why the interviewers always have to take what she says out of context and twist it to make her look like a nutcase.

Because they're stupid? They're only reporters... :) If you are smart you're able block all that out and just listen to Tori instead.
