I love this song, but I wonder if Prince meant for this song to become an anthem for gay men coming out of the closet? I know Prince is straight himself but I think he was trying to get the last laugh on all of those people who have called him a homosexual over the years.
actually, @watcher, those are The Steeles, a great gospel group in their own right. Prince worked with them a few times, including one of their albums which contains a cool song called Big God.
I can hear that STAPLES SINGERS thing in this song. But he did hang out with Mavis Staples during the Graffitti Bridge movie and album time. Wow, Prince can even do a little Gospel style too!! With a side of swing jazz, and rap. Excellent stuff.
