Calling The Beatles pop is a disservice to them. They could do anything. Lennon had the best rock voice of all time -- it could be so acid and edgy and hard when he wanted it to be. They were basically ridiculously perfect and I'm not sure they were human. The balance, the yin and yang, was all too perfect.

Rubbish. No way could Smokey have ever have said this as it is blatantly untrue and I actually challenge you to come up with the interview itself. This is simply an unfortunate example of a common practice in the 1960's where white bands would record their versions of songs by black artists and in many cases go on to have hits as white radio stations were more inclined to play songs by white artists than blacks which is why the awful Cilla Black and Lulu came to to prominence.

It's not a matter of race, it's about understanding what a song is about, and performing it justly, it just so happened that they did a better rendition, to my ears, of the song than the Miracles did.

That's not the case at all. The Impressions release was a major hit, the Beatles never released this as a single. It was recorded out of pure respect for Smokey Robinson. The Beatles gave Smokey 'big ups' repeatedy and it helped his career tremendously early on. Later, Harrison wrote two - two! - songs in honor of Smokey Robinson in consecutive albums in the mid-70s, 'Pure Smokey' and 'Ooh Baby You Know I Love You.'
