Here we are over 25 years later and the theme of the song that the average American is more concerned with self-gratification than improving the world we live in and the lives we lead, is still very much true. IMO, this is the mark of a great artistic accomplishment in music. If you want to just focus on the tune and enjoy the music you can but there is something much deeper going on. He even takes it one step further because if you are doing that the song's about you and you don't even know it.
