I have recently begun interviewing saxophonists about their improvisation techniques (see my blog, or my facebook for video interview uploads). For example, saxophonists Andy Shepperd and Snake Davis spoke to me about how being in the "here and now" was important to their approach to improvisation and the positive effects it has had on their playing. The Snake Davis interview can be found here on youtube search under "snake davis" and "Johnty Wilks"
There is nothing aboutr other planets, nor is there any incomprehensible truth here. What this living treasure who has already given us so much has realized is the absolute core of human existence=we in the West ern hemisphere are unused to is this central Buddhist idea-that life is birth, old age, sickness, and death. These are the four sufferings that all humans go through. Not a cause for negativity, they are, rather life's lessons. Meanwhile, enjoy the Hawk!
God created the world, but left it unfinished. WE are His collaborators, i.e., we co-labor to develop and finish this Work of His, i.e., the Expression of Who He is.
If we give assent to participate--we can opt out--we share in the Grand Scheme, which is outside of time, i.e. eternal.
We struggle against 1)Self-ishness, 2)narcissism, 3) ego delusions, etc.--that is, our own Self constructs, "project," or "creation."
He's a good man and a thinker, but if people really want to go deep and wide, it's erroneous to talk about the "why?" or the "purpose" of Life (I submit). That's a descent into duality.
EVERYTHING IS....period. There's nothing or no one to whom it needs provide explanation or purpose. Things...have purposes, but THAT which contains everything and is contained by nothing ....is beyond "comprehension." All is one.
EVERYTHING has no attributes.........after all, as they say: "Compared to WHAT?"
It's nice, but mostly because of Rollins' musical stature and less because of what he says, because that sounds rather meagre to me. Any good book on Buddhism will do better. But I don't want to belittle his statement, since many people look up to him and he may influence them in a good way.
But to me 'Work Time', 'Newk's Time' and 'Our Man in Jazz' convey his major message.
I recall when Ronnie Scott spoke about calling Sonny to the stage years ago. Scott entered the dressing room to see Sonny meditating in a headstand position (without arm support!) in a corner of the room. Scott said "most artists i call on are found shooting up but this man is from another planet!" No wonder Sonny is still in such fine shape, Bless him!
amazing. always refreshing when somebody with a little bit of renown manages nonetheless to speak a little bit of truth. I've just found out about Sunny Rollins and I like it.
Well spoken. Like a Buddha, to the point, convoluted, the essential facts and task. Buddha said "there are those who do not realise one day we all must die. Those who realise this end their quarrels".
BarbarraBay; Well said. It's so true. I wish more people, especially world leaders, would realise this..maybe we'd come to appreciate life abit more. Sonny has always been miles ahead in every way.
This is so fantastic, what a man and the goodness to us all.

Know what's weird? I have no clue what he's talking about, but at the same time, I know what he's talking about. . .

Rollins' second sabbatical in the late 60's was all about yoga and meditation. He paid his dues in that woodshed too.

Great honesty and truth Sonny! Look at Joe Samples youtube ,"Jammin" It has comments about the clones about the jazz clones and technicians.
