  • This is FANTASTIC!!!! What a great singer -- after hearing "Glitter and Be Gay"so many times sung dreadfully, she manages to do this difficult aria with such ease and presence. Brava!!!!

  • Marnie Breckenridge is a fabulous singer. i know because i was in the chorus when she starred in Hansel und Gretel in Indianapolis, Indiana.

  • P.S. The tempo for this song was generally faster (and more effective) in London, so I'd say the conductor here just has poor taste.

  • I have to agree, I think the tempi here are too slow and make the song rather heavyhanded. The directorial interpretation too, I think, is hideous. 'My wardrobe is expensive as the devil' - I don't think so! And what's with all that dreadful champagne flute schtick (with empty bottle and plastic liquid)! Atrocious. Breckenridge is a fabulous singer and actress (saw her as Cunegonde in Candide at the ENO, London recently.) Sadly she was lumbered with overly indulgent staging there too.

  • i'v eproved my point, and "peter" continues to try and see past the visual facts i have presendted by spitting lies right and left. my final comments on this video are: a wonderful cunegonde, but a disgusting conductor.

  • Terrific performance! Saw Marnie at the Bear Valley Music Fest last summer and she knocked me out with this and other great renditions. Get your website up to date so we know when we can see you again!

  • Fantastic Job... you are a true artist.

  • the notes and technique are both solid, its way too slow, however.

  • is that the original key? it seems a bit low to me!

  • Yes. This is the original key. This aria has great highs AND lows. Excellent job Marnie!

  • a message to whoever is singing this: you're amazing, but... DON'T CHEAT BY TAKING THE TEMPO SLOWER THAN WRITTEN. you have the notes, now go faster. it's way too slow. now this could have been a conductors mistake, but no matter how famous the conductor was, you need to wake him up with this tempo thing/

  • I don't know what you are talking about. This tempo is well within the realm of common performance tempo. It is NOT way too slow.

  • first of all, don['t a be a bitch and mark my comment with a thumbs down because i stated a fact. when leonard bernstein composed this score and when he CONDUCTED IT in his definitive recording and subsequent concert, the tempo was not what it is here. the tempo in this performance is taken slower to aid the singer, but the tempo marking in the main section of this song in the candide score does not say: in the realm of allegro for the singer's sake. the score says: allegro molto.

  • I didn't mark your comment with a thumbs down. Were you in this production? How do you know the reason behind the tempo?

  • how do i know the reason behind the tempo? it's simple: when smart people know a thing or two about music they can tell if a conductor is taking a piece too fast or not. it's simple, oh and btw: if you look at many commercial performances of this song around youtube, the tempo in the main section is a LOT faster than this.

  • How in the world would you know if the tempo was "taken slower to aid the singer"? And why do you have such a fowl 'mouth'? Opinions are fine, but your frustration here has nothing to do with tempi. It's clear you are passionate about the art form. Let that love infuse your comments here.

  • before i start: whoever has been marking my comments down is a cry baby and needs to speak with me personally. now, how would i know? because i own a score, and i have several recordings including the one conducted by bernstein and for the most part: his tempos are very differen't from the ones in this performance. if it was not to aid the singer, than it is just that the conductor does not have a good knowledge of the work.

  • Honestly, every conductor is gonna have this song going at different tempos. Every conductor's taste is different. I think this tempo is really interesting I would like to know why he chose this speed.

The lady that's playing Cunegonde, I think, isn't fit for this role. I really do like her voice, but I feel like her acting is very bland.

  • an artist sticks to what the composer intended, not "common performance tempo" and if you really knew anything about music, you would know this. so bottom line: shut up and know what you're talking about before you try and tell me i'm wrong with what's "common" because your attempt falls flat.

  • Who are you to tell me about tempi in this piece? I have played in the pit for this show twice. And believe it or not, there are not exact tempo markings for allegro molto. So bottom line, you aren't as knowledgeable as you think.

  • adn what do you mean who am i? and if you're telling the truth, than explain this:

    i27. tinypic . com / 2v8ifsx .jpg

oh that's funny, it looks like a copy of a page from my candide score, hmmmm now lets see... oh yes i see it, ALLEGRO MOLTO QUARTER NOTE EQUALS 132.

please, stfu unless you know what you're talking about. don't lie to try and prove a point either, especially when it's SUPER easy to prove you wrong. the "exact tempo marking" is here, liar.

  • (to go the the link, just copy and paste what i tyed and take out the spaces, otherwise it wont work)

  • What do I mean who are you? I don't understand what's so difficult about this question. Who are you?

I said there are not exact tempo markings for allegro molto. The tempo taken here is approximately 120. I'm sorry if it upsets you, but a 12-point variation in tempo is not that great. There is much more to a musical performance than exact tempo markings.

  • Ms. M, you are soooo flippin' funny! Brilliant!

  • Acting a flawless vocal technique - AWESOME!
