@RANDOOMSHIT I speak a little Danish, and comparing these simple phrases in the 2 languages there are many similarities (like with many languages) but the sounds Icelandic makes are much more glottal then Danish is. I'm no expert, but I hear similarities, but they are different enough that you can say they are practically the same language
@sonalex Icelandic is basically old norse, since old norse was spoken across all of scandinavia, it is no coincidence that the languages sound alike. Take it from an Icelander, who has read old scrolls from sweden and understood every single word and phrase 100% while the swedish need expert linguists to translate it.
Takk fyrir...its the best one can find on the net and its what you REALLY need.
Iam helping a german/icelandic friend nearly every summer in her guesthouse on Vestmannaeyjar ( Thohastid ...my tastature has no icelandic letters;-)) and these phrases are used all the time.Best training for me at home. Please do more of this
I'm currently learning Icelandic, and there are some things I've noticed. The grammar is fairly straightforward if you acquire a good method for learning all the cases. Because of this, writing your own sentences does not become very hard. It's a Germanic language, so there are similarities syntactically. However, the pronunciation is just blowing me out of the water. People thought English was rough, but this is just something else entirely.
@zygoose not really, e.g. ég veit ekki (I don't know), Epli eru ekki græn (apples are not green). Just basically a negative word, not to be perceived as threatening.
þýdd á færeysku er orðalagi þessa: Ja Nei Frálíkt Ikki Alt í lagi Tað er í lagi Tað er rætt Vinarligast Ja takk Eg takki tær fyri Tú ert vælkomin Nei takk Orsakað Eg biði orsaka (umskylda) Tað var ikki mín skyld Tað var mín skyld
Would have been cool if we in Sweden and the rest of the nordic countries still would have spoken the old norse language, that is closely related to Icelandic.. Then we would have been really united.
I like these videos. Its actually useful because the dictionary I have doesnt really cover much and she teaches full proper sentences...tho it doesnt mean learning this isnt a pain in the ass. lol But worth it all the same =)
coast of Norway understands much of the old Norse, because Nynorsk is a modernization of the old language we had before. So we have many words from old Norse.....
Well i thought so coz we have many friends from Norway and they said that norwegians can't understand it sorry, and i know that its old west norse, and also we can read old norse its only alittle different. Icelandic is the least changed language of old norse so we icelanders can understand what our forefathers were saying, and i wasnt being cocky about it at least that wasnt my intention. And the accent is actually better perserved in iceland that is what we have learned.
If anyone goes far enough back in time, they won't understand what their forefathers were saying. Just like Norwegians don't understand 100% of Old Norse, Icelanders don't understand Proto-Germanic. And please bear in mind that Icelandic is the remnants of Old WEST Norse, not Old Norse altogether. Also, most linguists claim that the Old West Norse accent is much better preserved in Norway than on Iceland. So try not to be so cocky about it.
who told you my english is bad !!! budy im holding canadian passport ( mission impossible ) for some 1 like you ohh dont forget>> drink the milk B4 u sleep .
Notblondeswedes English is better than yours. You can communicate, but it's grammatically incorrect. Normally, I'd give you credit for trying, but since you're being such an arsehole about it, I'll just tell you to fuck yourself :)
That's not relevant to anything, and that is not a coherent sentence. Many people can write properly in English, and I can write properly in my second language, so I think the reason your English is so bad is because you are actually stupid.
Learn to write properly, then I'll listen to what you have to say.
I know Germans, Norwegians, Poles, Pakistanis -all of them speak English better than you, and none of them speak it as their first language.
Swedish is actually pretty close to English (both of them are Germanic languages), so the fact that your English is so bad really only shows how much of an idiot you are.
@kickflipsman So what, Im Swedish to. My English is understandable, yours is not. Well, kinda, because I somehow managed to get what you meant. Anyway, it's not because you're not anglophone, but maybe because you haven't learnt English properly. Using insults like "dick head" is not very relevant. Ever. It will only make you look stupid. Sorry to say. If you have difficulties with languages, I can totally understand that. Just don't insult someone you don't know. Icelandic is nice though.
@kickflipsman Jag ser att svenska inte är din starkaste sida. Du kanske ska ta några svenska lektioner nu under sommarn så att du kommer ikapp dom andra barnen till höst.

Sluta spela apa, du skämmer bara ut dig. 2.
@RANDOOMSHIT congratulations sir, you have just proven how ignorant you are. even though icelandic and other scandinavian languages have many things in common, icelandic is A LOT different if you consider how similar danish/swedish/norwegian are between them. Icelandic is to those languages pretty much what Latin is to Spanish, French, Italian.. etc. Plus you mentioned FINLAND? hahaha you obviously have no idea of what you are talking about. Finnish is absolutely NOTHING similar to any of these.
Curious question: do double consonants mean added stress or an added consonant sound? They don't seem to be different consonants entirely as seen sometimes in other languages.
HIHI ! It looks a very cute language ! God bless you to give few informations aout your language, because here in France there are not many books to learn islandska !
it's kinda hard to explain "þ" is like "th" in English. Like "Th" in "Thank you"
English and Icelandic has this kept this sound except English lost the " þ" during it's own development and used "th" instead.
About the Mainland germanic languages like German and Dutch - "Th" experienced a vowel shift hence them saying "Dank" (Thank) with a D sound not a "th/þ" sound.
We should start using those characters again. We used to in old english, and it would mean a more accurate and efficient alphabet. For every time you could replace "th" with a single character i bet we'd save some paper.
