I never wore grips in gym! Now that i moved to a new gym they make me wear grips! They're so weird to me! I'm just so used to doing bars without them!
its just a preference to put your thumb around the bar in womens gymnastics. When I was swinging my thumbs would be wrapped around but always in the handstand position I gripped the bar with my thumbs. Any pirouetting or hopping I would grip the bar with my thumb. Also at the top of my giants out of habit I would grab the bar with my thumb wrapped around. It just depends :-)
Women do not grip the bar with their thumbs - bar is too wide. Men *do* use their thumbs (bar is thinner), which was tough for my son to learn because when he started gymnastics in rec, he learned the basic swing on the girls bar. :)

yea get some prolly size 1 and make sure they have a dowl, just swin gon them and chalk them really good for the first souple days do kips and pull overs cast to fly away stuff like that.
at my gym we got our grips when we were in lvl 5 and made our kips consitintly its best 2 get grips a bit early so ur used 2 them, but u want ur hands 2 b really tought so they withstand more difficult skills
i abaslutly HATE grips1 i tryed them for an intire summer broke them im and everything i always felt like i would peel off and i usualy did and i just dont like the grip that they give i would prefur to do bars with out grips! and sofar i have1 im doing level 9 this year and i dont wear grips!

you should get grips when either A, you peel off the bar offtenly, B, you get constant rips, or C, cause you just feel that you dont have eough grip on the bar.
wow i just got some new grips because i get rips so easily. But i dont think age and abiliy really matters it is how strong you are and how strong the skin on your hands are but i hate rips because my hands are way to sensitive i love grips for that reason only

When I did gymnastics I wore grips. Underneath my grips I wore tape grips because I would rip soo much.

I've been reading the comments and I just wanted to clear something up.
Grips do NOT keep you from getting less rips. I've gotten huge rips the size of quarters on my hands and I wear grips.
They only help you GRIP the bar.
Which is why they are called GRIPS.

I've never gotten used to grips. I don't like the way the bunch up on my hands. I can't figure them out. I just use lots of chalk and water.

if you dont want to wear grips you can always wear tape :]
it'll still give you the feeling that your holding the bar and it will protect your hands more then not wearing anything at all :]
