My very first comic (back when I really got into comics), was Ultimate Spidey. So, in a way, Bendis has a special place in my heart.
But as time has gone on, and I have found better books and writers, Bendis' writing has begun to get on my nerves like none other. His conversations just go on and on, and he keeps using flash backs that does nothing to advance the story. AND in Ultimate Spidey, he seems to not be able to tell a story w/o the X Men. All the guys sound the same, and its all banter
Bendis is getting that Disney money. He doesn't have to try (or care). You fellas are right, it's a shame. Brian has written some amazing stuff. I dropped The Avengers and New Avengers after the first issues. Damn shame.
OK, Clearance sales are not anything to mark prices at. Those were cheap because they couldn't move those trades for years, that's why it's a clearance, not a normal sale.
Also I for one am glad Spider man is getting action as his reward... how is that not an old standby for the character, it's in his theme song...
@comicculturewarrior All the booty he gets in ASM, honestly all I know about the Avengers books is what I hear in reviews... since I haven't paid for a bendis book in years now. (and no, in no way would I expect you to know that)
But it seems like good action, for him to be getting, but it would be WAY more dramatic if he was still married.
Bendis won't go away until people stop talking about him. Any press is good press. I agree with Elliot; the sporadic publishing schedules, rising costs, delays, and overall beyond mediocre stories are prompting me to shift to trades. I make my buying decisions on consistent reviews of a series, not a singular book in a run. Now if I only buy well-reviewed series in trade format, why on earth would I go to a comic book store when I can get 37% off from Amazon.
Maybe what Bendis needs is a new continuity. One that nobody knows anything about. That way he can make up any crap he wants. He needs that...or a slap in the face.
Spider-man hasn't been Spider-man in years. Why should Marvel care now about how people feel about the character when they really don't give that much of a damn about him in his own book. I've gone what..2 years since OMD in my adult life of not buying/reading a Spider-man comic after doing so for years prior. I don't know who that guy in The Hunt something or other is anymore, but he's sure a lot more player than I remember. Peter Pork-her should be his name now, that's all he seems to do.
Its interesting that you guys are discussing about this subject (going beyond Bendis' writing) because I just decided to stop buying monthlies altogether. The reason is exactly the same ones that Elliott is exposing. I have enjoyed a variety of comics for the last 10 years, however, the tendency to really drag on a story just so it can be collected, takes away loads of the enjoyment out of reading the monthly title. You guys basically reinforce to buy what I like in a format that is cheaper.
Hi could enyone recommend me any non Marvel/DC good comic book series. I would like to try something new as I dont have anything interestin to read, focusing only on collecting classic issues ( right nowe Neil Adams run on Batman, Green Lantern)
@Serge2099 Invincible & Chew are two of our fave series. We're always singing its praises on the show. And there are plenty of trades to help you get caught up!
@ValisX Did you check out our reviews of Hack/Slash, Chew, Mystery Society, The Sword, The Guild & Turf? All good books and not from Marvel or DC. (Also the least viewed videos we have.) :(
i really do hate how some writers dnt acknowledge the work of other writers with certain characters. as for bendis i reckon he just too lazy to write comics in fact i think he doesnt actually write alot of his own stuuf same goes for jeph loeb
You guys are so right. I'm a longtime Avengers fan and have been pretty disappointed with the current runs of Avengers and New Avengers to the point where I might stop buying them because there are a lot of other books coming out that are actually GOOD. Fortunately Secret Avengers and Avengers Academy are starting off great. But... I had high hopes for this Avengers series so I just hope Bendis' work starts getting better...
fuuuuukkkk this i had a good feeling bout this high hopes but im done wit all this marvel bull shit just picking up secret avengers and shield y so many ppl in the avengers and at the end even more bs fuk this im going to take ur advice until the sales change for the worse there going 2 keep putting these crappy ass books so im dropping it no second thoughts hopefully ppl will get the hang of it...dnt worry guys i feel ur pain bout these characters being wrote really crappy..
My emotional attatchment to characters is the exact reason I'll never pay to see them Bendisized. I don't know when I'll buy Marvel books again. I've sacrificed buying some Marvel books I would want to read because their overall business plan disgusts me (not that I have the right to be critical of such things as an average joe).
Of course Bendis is to blame for the crappy script you describe (I have not read it and don't plan to EVER read a Bendis book) ,but the editor's job is to manage that. In today's market, a big name writer has all the clout and the editor is crap.
Brightest Day is a perfect example of how books are padding just for trades. If readers start going straight to trades, they will likely get them cheaper at Barnes & Noble, Borders, or Amazon. This can ruin the direct market, which is good for no one.
Unlike many out there the art of a book has always been secondary to me--if the writing sucks it doesn't matter how 'pretty' the pictures are, I'll never pick up that book again. My eyes just skim the art on the first read through and if I like the story I'll go over every detail with a fine-toothed comb.
I've been reading the Claremont/Byrne X-men run and it's really dawned on me how bad decompression has gotten. Every issue of the X-Men was like an entire Bendis story arc. Geoff Johns can be pretty bad about it too though. Morrison seems like he's actually trying to prevent it by going back to 3 comic story arcs.
just one thing, the reason that osborn storyline did not line up with siege/ dark reign., is that it took place in the ultimate universe. just sayin.
jburns777 1 year ago
@jburns777 Uh no. The Osborne storyline took place in the 616 Universe as it was told in The Pulse comic which was set in the 616. Elliott

@agent42q Except that Spider-Man doesn't do jack shit in Bendis' Avengers books. What "action" are you talking about?

This is the reason why I don’t read any marvel comics, cause I know there’s so much mythology that I need to know to understand the story.
