To all Lyle Mays fans: In case you didn't know, Lyle attended North Texas State University. Their Jazz department puts out one album per year. In 1975 , Lyle composed or arranged the entire album. A feat not seen before or since. It was nominated for a grammy in the jazz genre. NTSU is now called University of North Texas. You will be "blown away" if you contact the school and purchase a copy of "Lab '75". UNT is in Denton, Texas.
Phil, did John McLaughlin tell you that personally, or are you assuming that he has curtain rods in his house and not blinds or shades?? Maybe you should check your scoop...I have met many great jazzmen in my time BUT i never speak for them because that would be idiotic. THAT was my point...
SteefStevens: how do you know Lyle is "retired"?? You mean to tell me that YOU have access to this information??This is the problem with these sites, morons are everywhere and preach their bullshit because they have nothing else to do... so go back to dropping acid which is where you obviously got your information...
doobiewannabe : I have a scoop for you. John McLaughlin buys his curtain-rods himself. These great jazzmen are not JeLo or Brad Pitt and you can meet them. Anyway, we called our president Chirac Super liar so I'll check the info. No need to insult people...
This is Lyle's composition. I sometimes regret he doesn't express more himself in the PMG. He composed beautiful themes and put his print on a lot of stuff but I'd like to hear more of this pianism.
Actually, I've heard him say that;s not possible with Pat nowadays... but he... no more mays in the PMG!!! he retired, shame..... 2 concerts in a reunion style , Japan??? probably because there's the money to get!!! LYLE IS SO SPECIAL
winwoodking, please dub this into a DVD before you loose it! Nana Vasconcelo on the berimbau, "CLASSIC". I love Pat and Lyle through the ages but this certainly brings back the nostalgia! Thanks for posting and I wish I had the whole concert as well.
I have kept this concert on VHS since I first saw it in 83. I have heard that there are people selling DVD bootlegs of this concert on ebay. I know it has never been officially released or I would have bought a copy.
I would love for Pat and Lyle to do another duo album like "As Falls Wichita..." without all of the extra musicians they use on the other PMG albums. I liked the Metheny/Mehldau albums, but without Lyle it just isn't the same.
Lyle has lots of other interests in life, music put aside, while it seems like Pat won't stop playing music until his last breath, he's quite a workaholic in his own way. Last time I heard of Lyle, he was busy doing pool competitions. Both of them say these breaks in the PMG activities are vital for several reasons, so i trust them completely. They are still capable of doing great things together. No doubt the next PMG effort will be worth waiting for....
It wouldn't surprise me if I saw Pat Metheny busking on the London Underground - he certainly does so many gigs through out the year. I am also looking forward to the next PMG release. I am sure it won't be disappointing
doesn't this tune sound like Christmas music? Kind open country snow-covered field, horse drawn carriage... Aaron Copeland meets Norman Rockwell!
cheers & Merry Christmas (2011)

The "Travels" era Metheny is some of the finest music ever recorded, every tune a masterpiece.

Phil:
You made up a good point, but I think Lyle understands his position in the group where there is only room for just one protagonist.
Agree?
fer66 2 years ago
fer66 : yes, Pat shines too much. And I don't know if Lyle has a lot of tunes like this one. I'll search.

Best musical marriage ... Pat & Lyle, there is no PMG without Lyle !

Why Pat does not do more with Mays is head scratching. We love Pat but we love Pat most when he is with Lyle Mays. Get back to work!

I agree. I certainly prefer the Metheny/Mays stuff. Lyle Mays really makes a difference live and in the studio
winwoodking 3 years ago
yeah metheny's solo stuff w/ other instrumentalists is cool or not but imo
the ONLY keyboard for metheny is mister mays
no offense to jim beard or mehldau meant either just that lyle mays IS connected to pat metheny like bread is to butter
