now i know its not just me. this dude is totally leading the interview to make it sound dramatic. dream theater is too awesome to make this into a soap opera
"...and luckily it's ended on good terms and those guys have made it blatantly clear that the door's always open for me..." -Mike Portnoy, 10th September 2010
"…I tried, and the door is now shut…the ball is now in their court, not mine…" -Mike Portnoy, 20th December 2010
my god.. he did lyrics, true... still best lyrics from dream theater are from petrucci, kevin moore and myung. I don't see the trouble of doing setlists, im sure the guys can handle it. Same goes for concepts... lets not forget who made metropolis or the killing hand. he did a lot beyond drumming true.. but the fact is, he didn't have to. And to be honest about the last couple of albuns, BC&SL and SC i always had the impression the he was sufocating the band.. thats my 2 cents
Well,i coudlnt go to my bandmates and ask them "i should we should have a break,ok?2 years,1 year",i imagtine the guys saying "ok" and stopping for a year,NEVER
Mike is right about his feelings, but can´t stop the guys
IMO after playing w/ all these different bands he has a new taste for different styles of music, and Dream theater has fallen into somewhat of a groove with the same style of music. The past 3 albums all sound the same really. I forget systematic chaos even came out.
Being that MP was more or less the main driving force behind DT, your post is actually kind of an ironic statement. MP more or less pushed the band into heavier and heavier albums.
I'd love to see DT regress a little bit into the style they had in the 90s. Awake and SFAM were masterpieces to say the very least and groundbreaking in the genre of progressive metal.
Perhaps the way for DT to move forward might be to take a step or two backward.
One think is real ... Dream Theater since released Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ... No good albums come out ... So, maybe Portnoy wanted to take a breath by that reason... and other guys wanted to continue with the releasing of easy-to-do albums. Who knows ... but since SDOIT don't like stuff enough.
@albertd200vc Are you kdding me? Train of thought, octavarium, systematic chaos, and black clouds and silver linings are amazing, along with SDoIT and their stuff before that. Obviously you're not a real DT fan.
@DaMouse100 he wanted a break but the other guys didn't fell like they needed that, and wanted to keep going... so he went away so they could keep working
two reasons why they couldn't take him back in Dec
1) they had another drummer
2) Mike had already said he was burned out with DT

reminds me of rush . Neil needed the time off and they respected that . could it be a record label problem pressure from the label ?

Minnemann is great, but I'm not sure he could sing Mike's vocal parts.

minneman would easily pick up where portnoy left off.

I think it's best for the band. It is to me the only way the rest of the band could clip off the umbilical cord and face maturity, It's all good

@USAon3 I agree - I hope DT goes back to their roots and goes more progressive rather than heavy with the new album.

No one could replace MP from DT!
The only person I would be glad to replace him is Jason Rullo from Symphony X

@kankuro1701 but he is a ant compared to MP. good metal drummer.. but could not fill his shoes for a sec.

Yeah, but Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds and Silver Linings sound very similar.

@thierryman No they don't. It's just that both "repentance" and the "shattered fortress" take a lot from "this dying soul".
