Louis ck is my favorite but doug would be my next choice. The episode from Louie (second season) with doug stanhope is my favorite of any episodes of any tv show iv ever seen.
PaddyCuinne, genuine thanks for this video/list, I appreciate it. To contribute a philosophical note of my own, I find that the aimless uncountable gibberish of the voices of youTube videos is head-aching, but that this sharing of knowledge (in its greatest form - comedy) is a great thing.
Andy Andrist, James Inman, Steve Hofstetter, and Doug Benson are all unfamiliar names. Thanks again.
George Carlin should definitely be on the list. He was a ground-breaker.
Stewart Lee too, if you're talking philosophical comedians. He's one of the best there is. And he gets extra kudos from me for being able to get a Glasgow audience speechless with laughter while doing a skit about William Wallace being gay. If, say, Rory McGrath tried that shit on, he'd emerge from the venue without a full set of limbs...
I just saw Deanis Leary and Joe Rogan are not bad at my taste. They seem to imitate the stile of Bill Hicks. That is also not bad at all. How many examples of imitation we know in literature and sometimes copies exceed the original. But not in this case.
But concerning the rest... They criticize social prejudices and superstitions but for my taste they are still to shallow. They are not touching the core of the problems.
Nice list, but do you seriously not think of Richard Prior to be worthy?
He would be up in my top 10 along with Billy Connolly, yes, i know hes not as rude and as ballsy as the others in the list, but i find his story telling and delivery brilliant.
How in the world did Dennis Leary get on this list?
Are there two Dennis Leary's or do you real mean the commercial actor, trucks are for men Ford voice over guy, uses the sacrifices of firefighters to promote his own career, fevered ego tainting our collective unconscious who stole every bit of Bill Hicks persona except for the punchlines because he failed to recognize them?
I too get a lot of my philosophical beliefs from comedians. I was going to call you out for saying Stanhope is funnier then Hicks (BLASPHEMY) but he is awesome... you probably know these people already but if you don't check out Louis Black, Henry Rollins (spoken word stuff) Janeane Garofalo, Bill Maher, Dave Atell and of course Chris Rock.
@dollsnatch well...and this is just my own little theory...but during and after the election, he became less funnier, and he started wearing a tie with his suit. I personally don't trust anyone on tv who wears a tie with his suit. Belittle me all you want, but that's just my opinion
stanhope is alot like hicks, they both seem almost perfect to me, on the stage. but i am the, anton willson, seems perfect. at times,, and at times9during their act) hicks and stanhope seem perfect too, but are too pessimistic about life in reallity for me to say they are a perfect act on stage, it shows through, their anger, and i think it throws them off a little, sometimes, other times it helps, anger is good, sometimes.
david cross and carlin, and lenny bruce, thans for the other ones i havent't heard of a few of them. i liked andy mostly. i always think there is a little too much animosity towards people in alot of these acts, but i guess "humor is a civilized way of dealing with hostility" frued, by "humor" i think he meant the real kind, the kind that brings tears to your eyes, not the fake kind of useing fake laughter to taunt the victim in a hostile situation. that seems uncivilized, laughing is a trip.
Daved cross is much better then Denis Leary. Leary sounds like a whiny bitch on stage. Hes not really that funny or deep. Aside from the material he stole from hicks i don't think i ever enjoyed his material.
meh.... thats incredibly debatable, don't get me wrong, george carlin was very philosophical but i wouldn't put him past bill hicks in terms of philosophical thought
hahaha. I love Doug Benson. Super High Me was a great movie. And Joe Rogan is pretty underrated for his stand-up. I like the video where he describes his DMT experience.
He's actually the first person that really opened my eyes to atheism/ sceptism. In my house it had been taboo before that and I'd always gone to a catholic school and just kind of assumed god's existance. He's funny too :P
Nice Post!

I like this, cause I always get annoyed with people sayign Carlin is hilarious, cause I have never laughed very hard at his comedy.
Does hye have some very smart and insightful things to say? Yes, but that doesn;t mean it's funny.
I;m not saying he's not funny at all, but people give him moe credit for his ideas than actual comedy.

As others suggested, check out Luis CK, Bill Burr and Lewis Black, they are all quite smart, make too much sense and are controversial to boot.

Leary is a fucking hack who stole Bill's act.
Doug Stanhope is not the new Hicks. Bill's message was ultimately a positive one. I find Stanhope to be more pessimistic and misanthropic.

Thank you for sharing. I'm a big fan of most of your list, but haven't heard of a couple of them.
